University of Colorado Head Football Coach Shows His Idiocy

And his sexism.

First there were charges of sex parties involving football players. Now former player Katie Hnida has said that she was raped by another player when she played for Colorado four years ago. She said she didn't tell the coach because she figured he'd kick her off the team if she complained. Good guess, I'd say.

Responding to the former player's rape charges, the coach, Gary Barnett, says there is no proof and there never will be.

He also said: "Well, it was obvious Katie was not very good. She was awful. OK? And you know what guys do, they respect your ability. You can be 90 years old, but if you can go out and play, they respect you. Well, Katie was, Katie was a girl. Not only was she a girl, but she was terrible."

Plus ca change, plus ca meme.

(That's French for "What a dumbass jock bastard!")

1. WTF??? He needs to resign after such shitty comments...
Leave it to a football coach to come up with such gems of illogic. She was raped because she wasn't a good place kicker?

What a goddamn goon this guy is!!!!

Go Katie!!!

5. Anybody in uniform for a Big-12 Conference game is awesome
I don't know if she ever played, but I saw the pictures of her on the sidelines during a game. That means she was one of the elite college football players in the country. Only elite level players get to even dress for a Big-12 football game.

6. He did seem to imply that. She couldn't kick,

ergo, the guys didn't respect her So if she was raped she deserved it because the guys couldn't respect her as a player.

It simply boggles the mind.

8. She kicked well enough to make the U COL team.
NCAA Division 1 football teams do not have open rosters for any student to sign their name on a sheet of paper to become a member of the football team. She had to earn her place as a walk-on on that team with excellent performance.

11. I know, and some of them don't perform as hoped,

particularly as freshmen. He's talking about Katie Hnida as if his staff didn't recruit her.

I'm just a bit stunned over this yo-yo. I haven't heard anything so blatantly sexist in years.

Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly is on CNN now.

Katie told Reilly that on her first day of practice at Colorado, she was surrounded by five huge players (her teammates) who "threatened her sexually, propositioned her in a vulgar manner." She was groped in huddles and called vulgar names on the practice field, and players exposed themselves to her. Teammates also threw balls at her head when she was kicking.

I think a MALE kicker who was treated that way just might have had a bad season, too.

41. Some have talent, but have shitty coaching.
Katie Hnida showed she was a top High School kicker. She proved she was a capable back-up at U. New Mexico. I submit that BARNETT shitty coaching was the problem here, not Hnida. She performed well away from CU, both before and after her time at CU.

9. It could be experiential learning for him, right?

By the way, Hnida says she was sexually "harassed and molested" (read: called names and grabbed) at Colorado, in addition to the rape.

Colorado's president is looking for someone to serve as a liason with the athletic department, to investigate whether the department's "culture" contributed to these events, blah, blah.

Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 07:37 AM by mouse7
Isn't that the same Barnett that got Northwestern some wins a few years ago? I'll bet Northwestern almost wishes it could hand those wins back now.

By the way... Katie Hnida was terrible, huh? She was good enough to play Big 12 Football as a walk-on as a freshman. A lot of guys dream of having the talent to be that "terrible."

7. Other women have filed charges that

they were raped at sex parties at Colorado, parties that were given to recruit players. And the coach is picking on a former player who happens to be female.

Soledad O'Brien on CNN now playing tape of Coach Macho Man to Elizabeth Hoffman, President, University of Colorado.

Hoffman says she wishes he had not made a statement like that. She "will have a conversation with him."

She said it nicely but I hope she will kick his ass up and down the football field a few times. There's just no excuse for these comments.

Does he not understand that rape is a serious crime? How much harm rape does to a woman?

12. Thanks! According to the Sports Illustrated writer,

Rick Reilly, Hnida successfully kicked all the extra points (28?) in her senior year of high school, plus 2 or 3 field goals, making her one of the top 50 kickers in the nation.

He also talked about kicking being largely mental and connected that to the treatment she says she received.

Reilly avoided saying that Barnett is an idiot, just presented good evidence that he is!

13. So because she's a girl, and she's "terrible", she deserves assault and
rape? Is that what you are saying Barnett, you troglodyte? Seriously, just because she's a woman who plays football, she's expected to endure this kind of crap. Ask Rocky Long, the head coach at New Mexico what he thinks. He's a coach who understands and gets it. YOU, on the other hand, fostered an environment of abuse and fear. Congratulations. If I was the Athletic Director there, I'd fire your ass.

21. To be fair, bigots rarely put their foot in it on television,

as this moron did. This is akin to Rush Limbaugh, in his brief and non-too-illustrious career as a sports commentator, making the stupid remarks about the black player.

What WERE they thinking? Was their brain engaged at all?

Limbaugh was fired, Barnett should be. When you're a coach and the world has decided that women should be given a chance in your sport, you owe the women decent treatment. It's your responsibility, along with your coaching staff, to ensure that they aren't subjected to the sort of treatment Katie Hnida alleges she experienced. And it's your responsibility not to denigrate your athletes, even if they're female, or black, and you'd prefer to coach only white males.

I just can't even believe he said it. My mom and I were watching CNN when they showed his interview and my jaw literally dropped. Here's this abnoxious jackass defending a rape by claiming that the victim was a "terrible" football player. Ugh.

What made it even worse is that the program is already in several sex-related scandals. That made his idiotic comments even more unbelievable.

all I heard of the coach's spew was, "Katie was a girl. And not only was she a girl, but she was terrible."

As if to say, not only was she a girl, which is bad enough, but she was also terrible. How can he parse it as anything else?

I don't want to turn the television on again until I read online that Coach Barnett has apologized (and, I would hope, been fired.)

34. I posted her UNM 2003 stats above. She was solid Div. I kicker.
She walked on to a Big-12 school campus and made the football team as a walk-on as a Freshman. She transferred out to New Mexico. She made the New Mexico football team, and was 2 for 2 on extra points as the UNM back-up kicker. She clearly was a solid Division I caliber football player. That means she was a hell of a football player. Anyone who can make and play Division I football is an outstanding football player.

24. What did he say that was wrong?
If she was good enough, she would be a part of the team. She wasn't and he spoke the truth. He would say the same thing about me if I went out there and tried to make the team...He would say I was terrible.

And he's right about the "Respect" part. Guys (Or anyone) respect results...Or at least ability.

Now...As for the accusations of rape, we'll just have to wait and see where the evidence leads.

I like the fact that he was blunt about it all. I get tired of political answers that aren't really answers at all.

Barnett has no knowledge whatsoever on the rape allegation because there have been no investigations of any kind as of yet, so is NO way he can claim the incident did or didn't happen. He was also wrong about her skill as a kicker as she was in the top 20% of High school kickers, and went on to prove capable as a kicker at University of New Mexico.

How the hell did she make the Colorado football team as a freshman walk-on to begin with? Were the coaches absent from the campus when the football roster was made? BARNETT made her a Colorado football player.

If she was as terrible as Barnett says, why did he make the decision to make her a member of his team?

If she showed enough talent to make the team at the beginning of the season, THEN became terrible, THEN it's BARNETT'S SHITTY COACHING that made her terrible AFTER SHE BECAME A BUFFALO. She clearly showed she was a capable back-up Div. I place kicker both in high school and after she left Colorado and went to New Mexico.
