4. Some liberal gays oppose it, too |
|
Liberal gay argument: Marriage is an oppressive holdover from olden days when women were sold from family to husband, etc., etc.
To them I say, if you don't want to get married, fine. But don't screw it up for the rest of us! We're having enough trouble with the right wingnuts.

3. I should just shut up, |

since I'm not gay and have never once discussed this with anyone I know who is gay, but there was some guy on NPR yesterday saying that there were some homosexual people who enjoyed their "outsider" status. I'm not sure if I actually believe that, though.

A certain number of gays equate "straight" with "boring," "ordinary," and "tedious," and abhor the thought of being accepted into this society. They share the mentality of the East Berliners of a few years back who moaned, "Give us back our wall!" or the Indians in 1947 who chanted, "Bring back the raj!" Speaking personally, I would never consider marrying anyone, but I think everyone should have the right.

the founder of the Radical Faeries. He said that LGBT people were a "cultural minority" that shouldn't ape straight behavior. He started the first LGBT rights group I believe too. I wish his ideas were more a part of the debate now - I consider him to be a bit more truthful than many of the "socially liberal" people that have dominated this debate so far.

The Raj, wasn't he that relief pitcher for the 1946 Cleveland Indians that they traded to the Yankees?

14. Here's the reason for "Bring back the raj" |
|
In many third world nations, and ethnic minority (usually foriegn) often dominates the commerce of the nation. A change in the regime often leads to this minority being scapegoated by the majority (native born and poor) which leads them to desire a retoration of the former regime. This has happened in Venezuela, Nigeria, Angola, Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, The Philipines, and many more. Read Amy Chua's "World on Fire"

like any group of folk, we come in a variety of belief mobiles. personally i'm for those things that bring us to equality -- and marriage is one of those things. special tax breaks, estate issues, health issues should not be the perogative of straight folk to determine the shape of my life. or anyone elses because they are gblt. it's simply time to move on from such hateful belief systems -- they pollute the environment.

9. I know two gay couples that want this subject to go away... |
|
..until after the election. There were good signs that Gay Marriage was right around the corner. Just keep cool for a year or so. Then Mass. happened. Now San Francisco is happening.
Now Rove is a happy, happy man and these two couples are predicting another term for smirk. I don't think so, but this subject is going to solidify the fundie base, and raise a Lot of money for the GOP at every level.
