One advantage to having a draft
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 07:12 PM by Bandit
It would have a tendency to de-politicize the service. It is getting extremely worrisome for me to have the service nothing but rabid right-wing ditto-heads. The military is supposed to be our military not just republicans military. I am not for a draft but if one happens I try to find at least one silver lining. We need to get Rush Limbaugh off Armed Forces Radio. He is after all a Felon Propagandist.

2. Some people just DO NOT get it
If anyone thinks the Bush twins are EVER EVER going to be at the slightest risk of being drafted (or any kids of members of congress, or any officials in the white house) they are dreaming.

But if you think they would get drafted... I have some nice ocean front property in Denver for sale...

3. Hm...
Yea, I'm sure Bush will really be getting the military vote this time around. Not only do you disrespect members of the military (ditto heads), but you fail to realize they actually DO have a brain. Any fool can see Bush = Iraq/Iran/Syria for 4 more.

4. lol - republicans' military.....
it's only theirs in the sense that they're the ones RUNNING it.....

they try very hard to avoid actually doing the bleeding...

a draft would have quite the opposite effect - it would be a complete polarizing/politicized event - everyone would be trying to avoid it - only the rich white republicans would be successful at avoiding it - riots....

5. it would sure as hell wake people up
and all those frat-boy types who cheer for war would suddenly have to put their bodies where their mouth is.

HA! I would love to see that.

You want war? Go fight it, motherfuckers.

6. hhhmmm
I think it is quite naive to think a draft will end a war, or make it anymore peaceful.

But, thanks for offering up working class folks to the gods. Cuz, you know, they're going to be put on the front lines.

7. if you support war, you should be willing to go fight it yourself
how many of the people I've seen driving around in H2's with American flags on the window would be willing to go anywhere and actually put on the boots and fight?

8. Swiss example
As the father of 18-y.o. and 16-y.o. sons, I have considered
the Swiss system.

In Switzerland, every male serves (3?) years active duty, and
then is in the reserve until the age of 60.

To the best of my knowledge, the last Swiss war was sometime
in the 1400's. William Tell against Austria.

Seems like a pretty good system to me. You want to go to war,
o.k., everybody's sons go. Result: no wars.

9. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
Or we can figure out the causes of so much of our wars (not necessarily all wars), and fix it from their. Instead of wasting 3 long years and more of young mens lives in subordination to the millitary.

Or make going to war for each person a personal decision. Make it so people have a right to say no to the govt. in case the govt. wants war. Make it an amendment that the govt. does not have the right to infringe on an individuals right to choose to risk his/her life in violent conflict under the state. I believe if people were given the choice they would choose to stay home. I mean this is why we have the draft, people have to be forced to do it in enmasse. I'm not sure that would be possible though. I just threw out a thought.

But I can see your point of view, because you don't want to lose your two sons.
