AP Wire - Bev Harris & Co publicity-seeking "conspiracy theorists!
AP Wire

February 18, 2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A Superior Court judge rejected a legal challenge Wednesday to California's March 2 primary over allegations that new electronic voting systems are vulnerable to hackers.

Judge Raymond Cadei denied a temporary restraining order sought against electronic voter machine maker Diebold Election Systems, Inc., saying there isn't enough evidence of security threats to justify interfering in an election just 13 days away.

A group of computer programmers and California voters alleged that new electronic touch-screen voting machines being used in at least 14 counties on March 2 are insecure and could be manipulated to disrupt election results. Legal challengers included Sacramento computer consultant Jim March and Washington state resident Bev Harris, who has written extensively on possible security glitches in new electronic voting systems.

<snip>

Diebold attorney Daniel D. McMillan called the challenge a "waste of public resources" brought on by publicity-seeking "conspiracy theorists."

This McMillan guy sounds like a real piece of work. Excuse me, a waste of public resources? How dare anyone question the validity of their bogus machines. Oh that's right we're all just a bunch of crack pots. Hang in their Bev & Co., these guys just continue to prove on a daily basis what a bunch of slimballs they really are.

2. that's the same sort of language...
...that was used against abolitionists and civil rights marchers over the years and suffragettes and union workers and so many other entities working for justice over the decades.

Stand strong. Let justice roll down.

We need to support and defend heros like Bev Harris, Jim March and Andy Stephenson and whoever else in this world that has the cajones to stand up for the truth.

7. BBV the $15 solution
We can put an end the touch screen voting.

How?

Be first in line on voting day and bring a very strong magnet.

No votes will be cast on that machine.

8. interesting theory
Attempting to tamper with voting equipment is a federal offense. Are you seriously suggesting that people do that?

I didn't think so.

10. Gee, so if you do it by accident....
....like, if someone has both hands on the screen (maybe to steady themselves) and when you touch two places at once, it registers a third instead, that's tampering? (And yes, it's happened)

Better example, someone happens to rub on the screen, innocently trying to clean up a smudge, and the thing goes out of registration...

Oh, I know, that wasn't a magnet incident. Point is, doesn't take a magnet. And yes, I know what I'm talking about, cleaning a touch screen control has sent some expensive studio cameras rolling out of control because the controls, well, were no longer in their proper locations.

By the way, the Diebold guy just put himself on line for libel, said that outside of the courtroom, eh?

Hey, I love that idea! Discovery and all, to try and prove Bev wrong. Yep, let's get that code in court.

Refer to earlier post. First inning. Game still on.

12. I simply have to disagree
Libel?

Bev Harris is the poster child for libel. Have you read her 'book'? It's full of it. It'd be a shame if they actually went after her on that issue now that she's hell-bent on dragging them into court anyway.

As for Jim March, I'm amazed that Diebold hasn't sued him for gross copyright violation and theft. I'm pretty sure that case wouldn't take 40 minutes... more like 40 seconds.

The article didn't say, but I'm guessing the judge didn't order Diebold or any of the other 19 defendants to pay the legal fees of the conspiracy theorists. Maybe (just for the sheer hilarity of it all) Diebold et al will ask Bev Harris to pay for their costs, based on the frivolous nature of the lawsuit.

And you're right, the game's still on.

First inning: Bev Harris strikes out swinging.
Second inning: Diebold hits one over the fence.

By my count the score is now $18 million to zero. Maybe Ms. Harris will get lucky and the game will get called on account of rain... otherwise it's looking like a slaughter.

(Of course it's not really a "game" to the people who have to actually run the elections, it's a business they take very seriously. It's only a game to the publicity-seeking conspiracy theory people.)

It'd look really strange if he won it without ever appearing there.
