Lawmaker Resigns After Bad-Check Charges

Thu Feb 19, 1:11 PM ET

CONCORD, N.H. - A 23-year-old lawmaker charged with writing bad checks and using his title to get a reserved parking place resigned Thursday rather than face expulsion from the New Hampshire Statehouse.

"I'm very sad to leave the House. I really feel that I belong there," said Rep. John Kerns, who claimed he has a medical condition that caused his behavior.

The legislative Ethics Committee had voted unanimously Wednesday to recommend that the House expel him. A House vote had been planned in March.

Lawmaker Fails To Show Up For Ethics Hearing
Kerns Asks For Delay, But Hearing Proceeds

CONCORD, N.H. -- A New Hampshire legislator failed to show up for his hearing on ethics charges Monday morning, but the hearing went ahead anyway.

Some Call For Legislator's Expulsion
Republican Rep. John Kerns faces ethics charges for passing bad checks with "State of New Hampshire" written on them, using his title to make people think he was acting in an official capacity when he was not, and threatening and intimidating Dover school officials.

Kerns also faces criminal charges of passing four bad checks in Dover. If convicted, he faces up to four years in jail.

2. LOL!
Again, the right-wingers who so whole-heartedly advocate "personal responsibility" use the same excuses anyone else does when it is their fault.

"It isn't my fault I manipulated people for my own gain! I have a mental issue"
Just like Limbaugh...

If a lib said that, the conservative pundits would be all over him for making up excuses and not accepting responsibility for his own actions.

This is a screwed up individual. Can't believe he was elected.

edit: Watch the video on this link, it explains the cape. What a nut.

"He appeared wearing a cape he said was part of a Knights of Columbus costume. According to the Associated Press, Kerns said he was a former Knights of Columbus member and that the outfit boosted his credibility."

17. In some places Mr. Hankie would be elected if he had an R after his name
They have no morals and no scruples. They don't know anything of the issues or the people only if they have a D or an R after their name. Ain't America great?

9. It could be a KoC cape.
However, I am Catholic, and I must say, I have only ever seen Knights of Columbus in full costume twice in my life, and both were at very solemn church ceremonies. It doesn't increase your credibility at all.

This is akin to Traficant and his antics.

I didn't know that "republican" was a medical condition that caused poor behavior. That explains a LOT.
