Constitutional amendment for a balanced budget ?? |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 01:34 AM by KelleyKramer
Remember that?
Keep in mind proposing to Amend the original United States Constitution is no small matter.
Well ...
I had a conversation with a conservative friend and the subject of the huge deficits came up. He repeated the same blather that the hate radio addicts taught him to say.. 'Deficits don’t really matter' and 'they are a little bit smaller than the Reagan records because of the gdp' or some such total hogwash.
I asked him about the constitutional amendment for a balanced budget. Reminded him that he had been screaming for over 10 years about that.
That was a key part of Newt Gingrich's 'Contract with America' and therefore was one of the top reasons the Republicans won control of congress in the first place.
Soooo, how do you reconcile the balanced budget amendment with this garbage you are saying today??
His answer ....
A total blank stare, the guy just completely froze.. I've heard people talk about 'a deer in headlights' look, but had never really see it up close until then. Seeing a total freeze-up like that was amazing.
This guy is usually NEVER at a loss of words, but he never really recovered and the conversation was basically over a little after that.
Not sure if that was a one-time thing from just this person, but if any of your right winger friends bring up this garbage about 'deficits don’t matter' ... Try asking them about the balanced budget amendment in the Contract with America and see what happens,
Best Kelley

1. It's truly Orwellian how people... |
|
believe in lock step what the hierarchy wants them to think. Doesn't matter what the opinion was 10 yrs ago, now it's bad.
Remember in the book "1984" how the main enemy of their country became their best ally in one day? Same thing here.
10 years ago balanced budget was good. Best thing we could do. Now, because a Republican is run ning up record deficits, deficits are good.

2. I was waiting for 'big government' to come up |
|
That (and the taxcuts for the rich) are directly related to the record Bush deficits, so was dying for him to say something about how he has always hated 'big government' and big spending Washington politicians.
He thinks Clinton is an evil liberal Democrat who was a tax and spend 'big government' president, but was dying to tell him ...
Bill Clinton increased government an average of about 1.9% each of his 8 years ... then George W Bush and the Republican congress have increased 'big government' spending by 8% every year.
Wow!
Bush and the Republicans spend your money like drunk sailors.
Now ... remind me again why we need a balanced budget amendment to the US constitution?
