A sign of desperation? They're rolling out Laura.
Laura Bush has suddenly been all over the news lately, first with her bizarre attack on gay marriage and now with a spirited defense of her husband:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=374720&mesg_id=374720

I think that this is a deliberate strategy, and it is yet another example of the weakness of her husband. Rove knows that W. is unpopular and untrustworthy, so he brings out Laura, that bastion of kindness, honesty and decency to defend him.

Thoughts? Comment?

2. why don't the Democrats point out that they fight their own battles?
Why don't they taunt little Georgie for hiding behind his mommy's and his wife's skirts?
If he's so tough, why doesn't he go head to head with his detractors, instead of speaking only to hand-picked crowds (who are coached on how to cheer exuberantly when he bounds on the stage with his little Mussolini outfits), hiding from the press, and only engaging in staged, supposedly hard-hitting interviews with the likes of Tim Russert, corporate toady extraordinaire?
Little weasels like Bush HATE having their cowardice noted, especially when they're pretending to be so big and tough.

19. Yes! The only first lady who has ever killed a man.
She should not get a free pass if she is speaking about politics. She is fair game.

The Democrats need to find a woman of some stature in the party to go after her on the death of a man due to reckless driving and the fact that like Shrub, she got off scot free because of family connections. Two peas in a friggin' pod. Sheila Jackson Lee would be a great person to go about the phony "former teacher". I doubt if she'd do it though, it takes someone with a killer instinct.

That would neutralize the Stepford Shrub.

Remember when the Repugs used a Senator from Idaho(?) to falsely accuse poor Kitty Dukakis of being a flag burning Commie? That lie hurt the Dukakis campaign badly, and the already emotionally fragile Mrs. Dukakis was never a factor in the campaign.

We need to use Repug tactics right back at them--except we use the truth.

3. she's spewing bigotry and keeping the AWOL story on front pages
it's good for us, whenever these 'behind the scenes' slugs get out in public....average Americans need to hear/see them to realize the dangers of having these mad, idiotic, religiously-insane radical reTHUGlicans in charge of OUR country....

5. Desperation? Sorry don't see it
They are sitting on a massive war chest. They have not even begun to fight yet. What we are seeing are some trial balloons. The sample bimbo bomb tossed at Kerry the other day and releasing the Stepford Wife are just testing the waters to see what might stick.

6. but bush* can't win just on hate-Kerry-TV ads...people want to see
some info on the issues....

and bush* has NO accomplishments to run on...NOTHING....TWO failed wars draining OUR economy, KILLING our soldiers, demolishing our military...MILLIONS of people out of work...MILLIONS of people without healthcare...hospitals closing and collapsing all over America...18,000 HOMELESS people in DC, right outside the WH door, 60 % of them are OUR Veterans...

so bush* has chosen a couple of 'little' issues to run on....his 'bigotry' initiative to CHANGE THE CONSTITUTION to discriminate against gays....AND steroid use in athletics (he said the word 'steroid' 18 times in the State of the Union address and NOT ONCE mentioned OUR dead soldiers)....so there you have it....

YES...bush* is desparate...things are NOT going according to plan...

watch flash video here...very short two minute history of saddam hussein and the USA, highlightling the CIA, which was headed by pappy bush* and donald rumsfeld, who served under reagun/bush...it's an eye-opener...

8. They're Already Going After Teresa Heinz
The other night I saw B-1 Bob Dornan repeatedly call her a "Walking ATM Machine"...despite being informed she can only donate the max $2,000 and that their home has been mortgaged to pay for the primaries.

Last night slimeball Drier tried to blow Lou Dobbs off by pointing that Heinz has 57 (notice the number???) plants outside the United States...as though she's the one who made that decission.

Plus lest we forget the pillaging Kitty Dukakis took in '88 and the viscious attacks on Hillary and Tipper and there's no letting up on these goons.

Pickles is being used as good cop to the other bad cop. You're right, there's a lot of trial ballooning going on...these assholes will do anything and everything for power. They'll keep going at us until they find something that sticks and if we don't counter fast and hard, it'll be Willie Horton or Inventing The Internet or some other sleeze-lie propaganda campaign.

What Pickles says is nothing...psychobabble, but she's the Anti-Hillary...and to the Wingnut hive, the "great wife hope"...

11. many people make up their mind for Presidential elections
MONTHS before the elections....

plus, the new restrictions closer to the election keeps attack ads off the air...

the timing is fine...gosh..just heard NPR guest talking about Enron and bush* again...it's been a really month for 'our side'....first AWOL (which is still all over the news, including the weekly Newsweeek/Time), even laura made the front pages yesterday blabbing away about AWOL....

and NOW, ENRON is back !!!! the shilling perp-walk brings back the whole Enron bush* scandals into the public eye...bush*'s good friend 'kenny-boy lay' sleeping at the White House and all...'kenny who?'....time to bring back all those cartoons, quotes, and editorials from last year...

bush* has plenty of baggage and this is rolling along quite nicely...they are self-destructing on their own, without a lot of help from us....

17. Hold The Bongos And Cigars
It can't be emphasized enough how fleet the public consciousness is and how it's preyed upon by the media. Look at how things have flipped, as you've noted, over the past 6 weeks (mostly since the primaries became a cable news obsession)...and they can easily swing another way just as quick.

No doubt, the seeds for this regimes destruction aren't just planted, they've taken root and the weeds are all over our political landscape. Try to cut them off without yanking on the roots and they'll grow back and even nastier. And I can't say enough how this regime will use whatever tactic at its disposal, legal or illegal, to maintain their power.

Until recently, any charge we threw came back as "sour grapes", "UnAmuerican" and debased and ridiculed in the media. Damn straight a lot of us are pissed and that the latest stream of embarassments on this regime are great to see...but we have a lot of work here to now frame this election and keep the GOOP on their heels.

Until now all the damage this regime hasn't stuck to bunnypants...as they've been able to lie or tap dance their way around issues; and generally hitting one at a time. Now there's a lot of lose ends floating out there and this is the first signs of a crack in RoveCo. I've seen in a long time...and that makes them even more dangerous.

What we need to do is keep questioning...or prodding the questioners. Let's put their credibility to the test at every turn and charge. On my part, I don't try to convert GOOP acquaintences...if politics is metioned these days, it's them who start the conversation...I just listen and ask questions...like how their finances are, have they flown lately and eventually how they're doing now compared to 3 years ago...then just sit back and watch the wheels turn.

I'm feeling a shift in the wind, but this is far from a done deal. Many of those who currently have second thoughts about * can talk the talk...will that come to walking the walk (or not walking to the polls in certain cases)? How do we know that the person who claims how awful this regime is and how they're gonna vote this slime out...and then meets with a Repugnican friend and chirps the praises of the regime...feeling this is his/her way of "keeping the peace".

A friend of mine once claimed that most people may have made up their minds months before an election, but they don't really make the decission until election day...and that's after a check of their pocketbooks. In 2000 there wasn't the economic devestation there is today...so my salvation is (and this feel terrible posting this) that the economy is so bad that any "upturn" (which I consider very unlikely) that there'll be enough hurting pocketbooks in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, West Virginia, Arizona and even <shudder> Florida, that could lead to some real partying around here in November. And then our real work begins...

15. This issue has been bubbling for years ~ It ain't over yet
There is a major question they need to answer and they have none. Why did Bush* refuse his flight physical and quit flying after so much had been invested in his training. Why Did Bush* Quit?

12. Wishful thinking. They aren't anywhere near desperate.
It is way early in the campaign. President's wives always do some campaigning. No news there. So far everything is just routine.

There is an element of thought here at DU that wants to interpret everything the Reps do as somehow desperate. By now, I have seen campaigns when they have been genuinely desperate, and the Reps are far from desperate. In fact, they are actually fairly confident. They think that they will be able to cast Kerry as a combination of McGovern (Anti-Defense, Kerry has voted against a lot of weapons programs. Wants USA military placed under UN command when outside USA),Mondale (Tax increaser), Dukakis (Out of touch New England Liberal), & Teddy Kennedy (Super rich & super liberal). That's their game plan.

16. not desperation,
but highly hyprocritical, imo.

We have heard next to nothing from Laura Bush during her husband's term in office. When the book the "Perfect Wife" came out, I almost puked. She's a "traditional" first lady, never saying anything except backing her husband, so I feel it is disingenous to have Laura campaign. We have a reason to worry about her, because she is appealing to voters who do not necessarily like Mr Bush. However, we must remember that Laura has done very little as First Lady--her stumping speeches on education and libraries sound all warm and fuzzy, but they do not match her husband's plans and goals in the slightest.

It's a facade, folks. Remember we are voting for George, not Laura!!!

20. They have done a poor job of defining the first lady
She's really had almost zero airtime. Hillary, Barbara, Nancy all have had more time to define themselves. I think many will just go: who is this stranger on my screen? The only thing I know about her is she killed a man and is a librarian.
