Laura Ingraham on gay marriage - founding fathers would be shocked |
|
She said this last night.
This, of course, in the context that the founding fathers are all hallowed icons.
I (and I hope others) at once thought of other things the founding fathers would be shocked about...
...the end of slavery
...votes for Blacks
...votes for women
as well as such things as atomic bombs, TV, radio, the internet,...
I hope other listeners might have begun to question the meme of 'the original intent' of the writers of the constitution and having to interpret everything in the context of the world of the late 1700s.

Didn't the founding "fathers" dress up in powdered wigs and tights?
Maybe Laura should reconsider...

nothing has quite as much inertia as the ahistorical white man....
lol - the founding fathers weren't prescient any more than we are - they had no idea whatsoever that the various changes mentioned in this thread would take place.... they surely would've fought tooth n nail against the bulk of them, in fact...

3. I wish we could build her a time machine. |
|
Then she could really enjoy the 18th century lifestyle.
You know what else would really shock the Founding Fathers? That we let Papists become citizens, and even run for President.

8. Some of the founding fathers were having sex with their slaves. |
|
Heck, they might have even had sex with MALE slaves.
Laura is an ignorant, non-thinking media whore.

10. The great thing about them |
|
Is that they knew that what shocked them might not shock us, and gave us the means to give the vote to Blacks and women, and end slavery.
Those amendments were damn successful. The one amendment that wasn't successful was the one that told people what was good for them: we had to repeal Prohibition. All it did was make criminals rich. Did we learn from that? No. We prohibit addictive drugs and make criminal empires of wealth.

12. just what I was thinking |
|
my husband told me that people from all over the country were sending flowers anonymously to those marrying in SF. I thought that was really cool and sweet. When was the last time that many people rushed to get married, when you think about it, other than for money, performance art extravaganza or a Rev. Moon event! The folks in SF really want to get married and that should be good enough for the "backward thinking."

Well, there were always rumors when I was growing up that the Father of our Country, George Washington, was gay. Not sure if that was true or not...

to find that homosexuality existed since time began, even in the world of the founding fathers – conceivably even including a founding father or two.

Our urban society -- many, including Jefferson, wanted a rural society.
International treaties, treaty organizations (e.g., NATO), the UN -- many wanted the U.S. to avoid international entanglements.
A standing military.
