Bill Moyers....NOW..... American Evangelical Christians
Sounds like this will be a show worth watching. Especially in light of the fact this will be one of his last appearances on NOW. I will miss Moyers since he represents what a journalist should be.

The Theology of Christian Zionism

Increasingly, American evangelical Christians have emerged to form an unlikely alliance with right-wing Jews in Israel. Citing Biblical prophecy, these evangelicals call for all of the West Bank to remain in Israeli hands, and oppose any two-state solution. Sometimes called Christian Zionists, because of their literal belief that a Christian Messiah will come to earth near Jerusalem, they have joined with the Israeli right-wing to oppose any division of Jerusalem. (For more on the union of American Christians and Jews, read the Bill Moyers interview with Yechiel Eckstein and Ralph Reed of Stand for Israel.)
NOW's segment "God and Politics in the Holy Land" examines Christian Zionism's theological interpretation of the Bible and its political application to the modern state of Israel. Learn about the foundation of this movement through a greater understanding of some of the key components.

Evangelicalism:
Evangelicalism is the movement, especially in English-language theology, which places special emphasis upon the supreme authority of Scripture and the atoning death of Christ. According to Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance, the term was originally used to refer to "those faith groups which followed traditional Christian beliefs, in contrast with two other movements: philosophical rationalism and legalistic Christianity."

Today, evangelicalism generally refers to a broad spectrum of Protestant Christians; the majority tend to take conservative views on social matters

1. You could call me a Christian Zionist according to this article
The only thing I find offensive in the article is they consider Ralph Reed a spokesman He is highly offensive in manner, tone and message as far as I'm concerned. He is more demon than Christian. When Reed spoke to a group of influential Mormons and told them their exodus to Utah was reminicient of Israel's exodus to the Promised Land that did it for me. Reed will say anything, legitimize any group (no matter how offensive) to further the republican agenda.

6. Isn't he going to have a segment on the Forida protests, too?
The ones where the cops were dressed in riot gear and were so awful to the elderly who were protesting job loss of the younger workers. From last week's preview it looked like they'll have footage from the goings on.

This should be a strong broadcast this week. I'll be watching Moyers and listening to Mike M. on the internet radio.

10. I think the piece about the Miami protests is next week.
About the police brutality.

I love Moyers but I think he has the right to retire. He's fought the good fight his whole life. He should do what he wants.

I think the show will live on, and he has been grooming his successor for the past year. I think it will be okay.

11. Excellent program so far
The Christian Zionist thing just freaks me out to no end. It seems that evangelists are taking over everywhere I look (got 3 brochures this week in Northern VA for Jesus saves or else you die etc). I can't understand how so many Israeli's partner up with these Christian Zionists considering how the evangelists really view them (i.e. apocalypse fodder). On a positive note I'm in love with Connie Rice, if a woman can be that good and share Exon Condi's DNA there may be hope for us yet.....

PS I'm gonna miss Moyers he is the king of interview technique

13. Christian Zionist want the Jews to have the Holy Hand
They believe that once the Jews reclaim the Holy Land, Jesus will return and give them a choice between Him and death.

Prince of Peace indeed...

17. Umm....can someone tell me when the Bible became codified as law?
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 11:38 PM by justjones
Hasn't this been tried before?

And I'm not real familiar with the Bible, but aren't they supposed to wait for this Messiah to give them the land? Just like if you can't wait until Christmas morning to open up your presents, so you go downstairs and open them all up before your parents, and they're pissed you didn't wait and not only do they whoop your ass, they take away all your presents and gives them to the Goodwill....isn't the Messiah going to be pissed that these so-called Christians are all for Israel's land grab and violence against the Palestinians.....

If this Rapture stuff is true, I hope this Messiah dude shows up in Compton....the Bronx.....or someplace far away from these freaks....and he's a she.....and black, or even worse in their eyes right about now, an Arab......it'll serve these fuckers right....

21. Ive read the bible plenty AND the Constitution
bottom line.

The Treaty of Tripoli, passed by the U.S. Senate in 1797, read in part: "The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion."

20. What a crop of loonies!
Here come these Biblical Reconstructionists thumping, singing and spewing their religious shit into the political landscape telling everybody what to think and inflaming further already dangerous situations.

That truculent slut of a radio jock cites the Bible as justification for the West Bank occupation is somebody I would like to ask a few candid questions. She is a bought and paid for media-evangelical or my name isn't 9215. I'd like to see her sorry ass on the front lines when the shit hits the fan. You can bet she won't be there. FUCKING COWARD!

These warped bastards claim that because something is in the Bible that it makes it true, unless of course we are talking about biblical prohibitions against charging usury. They have to be some of the most fucked up loonies on this planet. Do people realize the very dangerous precedent created with this intrusion of religion into the geo-political landscape?

These assholes have been waiting for the second coming since the first anniversary of Christ's death and their flock suck it up like there is no tommorrow.

IMO this waiting for the second coming is just a warped perspective on their own inevitable death; a way to control the process. If they want to end their phony lives why don't they just go commit suicide and not drag the rest of us down with them.

26. We need to hammer this issue.
Bush needs to take a stand about this during this election cycle. He has backed off the 2 state policy in order to appease his rabid base. He needs to #%@! or get off the pot, so to speak.
