What's up with pandering to Cuban-Americans? |
|
Note: I will try and present this in a matter that is not inflammatory.
Who do the Cuban-Americans think they are?
I have noticed how almost all Republicans and even some Democrats are kowtowing to the Cuban ex-pats in Florida.
It happened when Elian was here, and the Cuban ex-pats kidnapped him and held him hostage until Janet Reno had the guts to return that boy to Cuba with his father.
It happened when there were talks of lifting the unfair embargo with Cuba, and the cuban ex-pats said NOOOOOOO. They said it was so unfair that someone might be able to travel where they want to travel. How dare you travel? Don't you know I have President Boosh in my back pocket and if I say that you can't travel to Cuba, then you can't travel there.
I turned on Lou Dobbs and I saw how many Cuban-Americans are working on President Bush's re-election campaign.
Most of these people are not Democrats.
Lots of them are taking advantage of an unfairness in our immigration laws which generally lets Cubans stay here if they can make it to our shores.
That's why they are continually trying to sail crappy boats to the mainland.
It is unfair that we ask Mexicans and Puerto Ricans and Haitians to respect our immigration policy, but there is an exemption for Cuban-Americans. Are Cuban-Americans superior to other Hispanics? NO!
Democrats should stop pandering to these ex-pats because they won't vote for Democrats and I am sick and tired of hearing their whining.
They don't have a RIGHT to tell me what country I can and cannot visit, and I think this pandering is disgusting.
Now, what do you think? :D

5. My problem with it is that it is a few, well organized extremists that |
|
use the understandably, anti-Castro sentiment of many Cuban-Americans and Cuban refugees to promote their own agenda. They have taken over the debate to the extent that there is no debate. I think we need to open relations with Cuba TO bring down the regime. We have had great success when we start to open communist countries up, vs. an embargo that much of the world ignores.
Embargoes work when we have real commitment from a majority of the other nations, i.e. Libya.

But I'd like to point out that they're not ALL Republicans. I have very good Cuban-American friends in Florida, and they wouldn't vote for Gov. Bush under any circumstances. Not only that, but they tell me that other Cubanos whisper similar thoughts to them. What's interesting is that they have to whisper; they can't speak openly or they'll be disowned by their families and friends.

26. I'm glad you accept my apology |
|
That is big of you but is also took a lot for me to apologize. Listen, I'm not trying to attack you personally, if it seems like that again I am sorry. I am trying to attack the message. I udnerstand how you could feel this way towards a certain person or groups of people but no matter if they're right or wrong I don't like nor will I tolerate people attacking another's race.
I will agree that Sharpton made those comments but there is no need for you to fall into that trap of calling names back. Just ignore him and move on.
As for the Cubans, I think I expressed how I felt about that situation.
I am partly a minority not only b/c I am gay but b/c I am part Spanish. Don't generalize and attack one race b/c of what a few people do. Hope you consider my points. Open-minded ness is a necessity.

15. Who are they "bullying" around |
|
I don't see that point. As far what happens in that country, it should be our business unless you are from Cuba then the gov. (if you are a U.S. citizen) should step in to allow you back in the country. I feel Cubans who come to this country are only trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. It's unfortunate that they are not blessed with the experience of living in this country to know what "group" to trust and not. But they will learn that the repugs are not doing anything to truly help them. They are confused right now. It is up to us to help them learn the difference.

12. Lot's of cash to be made in Cuba...these are the rich folks that were |

swinging deals with the American rich. What do you think Castro was all about but a response to the corrupt rich corporatists bent on destroying Cuba for short-term gains by the ultra-rich.

14. You need to be more specific... it is Miami Cubans |
|
They are the ones (not all but most) that are politically aligned with the GOP for the express purpose of removing Castro from Cuba. They have their own little country of Cuba in that part of Florida.
For those Cubans that are of that mind... nothing that the Democratic Party does will change their mind or heart. They want the United States to do their dirty work. Of course, they probably expect gw* to do the same as he did in Iraq.
All of the other Hispanics in Florida should be considered differently.

don't have to respect our immigration policy. Puerto Rico is an American colony. Puerto Ricans are Americans.
