1. Are you under the impression that the majority does NOT oppose?

I'm not arguing the right or wrong of it. But there is no question that the majority DO oppose "gay marriage".

On edit - Sorry, I just read the first couple paragraphs of the linked article. THAT view is not the overwhelming majority. But I stick by my first sentence.

The majority supported segregated schools.

The majority has a history of supporting and opposing some really bad ideas. Good thing we have some rights guaranteed that the majority cannot take away.

4. Time For Perspective...

I'm starting to see...other than gays and fundies, this is a definite non-issue. This has no affect on the majority of American's lives and it's easy to see this straw-man issue being used to divert from this regimes miserable economic, security and military record.

The GOOP wants the Democrats to chirp up this issue to divert from their troubles and growing scandals and attempt to scare their hive into formation with that evil scepter of sex/homosexuality. These people never feel comfortable in their skin, thus must climb into yours.

Most people I know understand the disconnect here...the difference between marriage in a legal sense (or civil union or whatever name you want to give it) vs. that in a spiritual/religious sense. The GOOP morans forget that 50% of the people in this country are divorced, thus have had some contact with the divorce court system and the myriad of laws concerning child custody, property and other financial issues. It's a firsthand lesson on the legal side of things...one that scares many away from marrying again.

Thus, while this is an important legal issue for gays, it has no bearing on the rest of the population and I think the shelf-life of this non-issue will yo-yo during the campaign based on the need of RoveCo to keep his horde in line. In fact, this could be a bellweather as to how things are going...if Rove pulls out this issue (or abortion), then we know there's troubles happening in GOOPerland.

11. Wedge issues only need small percentages to work.

Blacks are a strong part of our base, and they are 75% opposed to gay marriage. Latinos are also a big part of our base, and they are almost all strongly Roman Catholic, and the famous Latino machismo has little room for gays. If the issue peels off only one in twenty then we get hurt badly in our base.

One in twenty doesn't sound like much, but the effect would be huge. That's why it is called a "wedge issue".

Is "Nancy" (an interesting name given the subject) proposing that most "regular" marriages are entered into by casual acquaintenances?

I know a lot of m/f married people and pretty damn sure they were
"good friends" before making their commitments...
