Last night, the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination in my Congressional district (Maryland’s 6th) said that he is going to support George W. Bush for President. I decided to do something about this and run as a write in candidate. Below is my announcement. Running for office--even briefly as a write-in candidate--is expensive, and I am asking for every cent you can spare. If nominated, I will support the Democratic nominee for president.
Please make checks payable to the Mike Guss for Congress Committee, 116 W. Third St. #2 Frederick, Md. 21701.
Sincerely, Mike Guss
Mike Guss Announces Write-In Candidacy for Congress:
Frederick resident Mike Guss announced Saturday that he will run as a write-in candidate in the Democratic primary for Congress in the sixth district. Guss, 24, said he is entering the race because the Democratic party deserves a candidate who is willing to go door-to-door and engage in grass-roots campaigning. Guss said, “I’ve worked on seven Democratic campaigns all over this region. I know the importance of talking to people.”
“We’re never going to match the Republicans’ money, but we can beat them with hard work," Guss said. Guss, a Graduate Student at the University of Baltimore, is concerned with the exporting of American jobs, the deterioration of the Chesapeake Bay, and corporate tax shelters. “Corporations are getting lots of generous tax breaks while workers are laid off and our environment is trashed,” Guss said. “The near-extinction of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay is a warning. We must treat our natural resources with greater care. In Congress, I’ll stand up for the environment.”
Reducing the high price of college education and the crushing debt on young families that comes with a college degree are also part of Guss’ platform. “Too many people are being priced out of higher education. Talented students from working class backgrounds should have access to financial aid that enables them to attend college without taking out huge loans.”
Guss plans to run a hard, grass-roots campaign. “I will knock on two thousand doors over the next ten days. Door-to-door campaigning is the most effective type of campaigning. We only have ten days, but I think we can win. The other candidates in the primary have failed to engage in grass-roots campaigning. The only way for a Democrat to win in this district is through door-to-door campaigning.”
Guss pledged to only serve three terms in Congress. “Fresh faces are important in Congress, and unlike Congressman Bartlett, I will keep my promise to only serve six years in the Congress. If you can’t get it done in six years, you should give somebody else a chance,” said Guss.
Guss, a moderate Democrat, said that he is troubled by the high deficits of the Bush administration. “Deficits add to the national debt, putting the burden of government programs on the backs of the next generation. In Congress, I will vote for balanced budgets and against adding to the national debt.”
Guss also said that he opposed the war in Iraq. Guss said, “I am glad that Saddam Hussein is no longer in power. The world is a better and safer place without him. But I thought it was war of choice, not a war of necessity. We should focus on Al Qaeda and capturing Osama bin Laden. In Congress, I will fight every day to make sure that we take the most effective actions to assure the security of this nation.”
The Democratic primary election is on March 2nd. Guss pledged to support the Democratic nominee for President. “I’m not going to name names, but another candidate says that he supports George W. Bush for President. I am a real Democrat and I will support our nominee for president,” said Guss.
