AUSTIN - Secretary of State Geoffrey Connor was released from an Austin hospital on Friday following an emergency appendectomy surgery, a spokeswoman said.

Connor worked late Tuesday night to monitor vote tabulations in the special elections for Senate districts 1 and 31. He started feeling sick that night and went to Seton Hospital on Wednesday evening, Waisath said.
Connor was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry in August. He was assistant secretary of state for three years before then. ....

AUSTIN -- Mike Toomey, who now is Gov. Rick Perry's chief of staff, had periodic meetings during the 2002 election season with leaders of two groups being investigated by prosecutors for possibly spending corporate money illegally on Republican legislative campaigns.
