TX Democrats - Work Against Bush in TX or Other State During GE?
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 09:14 PM by quam
Considering there are many Texas Democrats (2,429,329 voted for Gore) who could be a vital resource to a campaign, anywhere, what are the opinions of those in Texas:

First, should Texas Democrats organize and use all resources to defeat Bush in Texas?

Or, assuming Bush will take Texas (don't the odds favor Bush taking Texas?), should Texas Democrats use their resources and time to defeat Bush in swing states?

1. I have a better idea
Since TX Democrats are going to be outnumbered in election after election maybe we should organize a campaign to get TX Democrats to move to swing states, where their votes will count. I'm sorry, but I am so demoralized. If we couldn't win one, not one, lousy statewide election in 2002 with the "Dream Team" what's to say things will ever be any different? Elections in Texas, at the state level anyway, will be decided in the Republican primary. It's kind of like the NFC Championship in the 1980's: those games were the real Super Bowls.

7. Rest assured, there will be a swing to Democrats, sooner or
later. The party in power, if they control everything, gets corrupted. It also develops a lot of infighting. So, they decimate themselves. Then the public becomes wise to their corruption and votes them out!

Think about it! Texas used to be a solid Democratic state. It will be again.

And you've got all the Hispanic population that's going to want "a piece of the pie".

and I'll finish out my wait in another state.

2. Good questions
As a frustrated Texas Democrat, I would like to use some of my energy to help defeat this guy instead of just seething on the sidelines.

Any suggestions on specifically how people like me can help?

3. Forget TX President. Fight to keep our congressmen.
They might be more conservative than we like, but if we could pull off a few close victories, we'll help to roll back Tom Delay's gerrymandering.

There are five embattled democratic congressmen at this point who need help, and there's pretty much one near wherever you are (except perhaps in the RGV).

Max Sandlin 1CD Marshall
Nick Lampson 2CD Beaumont
Chet Edwards 17CD Waco
Charlie Stenholm 19CD West Tx
Martin Frost 32CD Dallas area

4. Let's not forget Lloyd Doggett in District 25
Nothing is a sure bet, and there is no one that pisses Tom DeLay more than Lloyd Doggett. Lloyd may be running in a safer district than our other Dem congressmen under attack, but this is the first race we have to win on May 9th. I think Leticia Hinojosa is okay, but damn it I am not willing to give up a powerful house representative who serves on Ways and Means, to start over. This coming from a Latina whose family lives in Valley. I'm in Austin and no longer in Lloyd's district. My mom will be voting for him though, so I'll just write her letters. We keep him in the family somehow. And I still consider him my congressman even if he's not officially my congressman anymore.

Love you Lloyd.

8. Don't forget to vote for Ciro Rodriguez over Cuellar in 28.
Henry Cuellar calls himself a democrat, but he was appointed in 2001 to be Secretary of State by Rick Perry, and talks about Rodriguez' "radical" politics (whatever that means, given Rodriguez' 33% rating from the ACLU, among other things).

The last thing we need is another Zell Miller-Ralph Hall democrat. And we certainly don't need one in South Texas.

10. That's where I'm putting most of my efforts...
including, of course, Ciro and Lloyd Doggett.

6. THIS Texan ain't going ANYwhere! (m)
Look, my peeps have been Democrats from the word "go". My dad still remembers his mom telling him he didn't even have to look at the names on the ballot, so long as it said "Democrat" next to it.

And I'll be DAMNED if Rick "The Rat" Perry and his ilk are gonna drive me from my home, where my people have lived since **1781**...that's right, since long before Tay-jas was a STATE.

Dammit, we will prevail.

I'm Democrat, and I vote Democrat every frigging time in every frigging election.

I also have made it my life's mission to register voters here. Especially this summer, we'll be setting up tables in low-income minority neighborhoods and getting out the vote.

11. 1781! Wow!
My family has been here since the days of the Republic. I'm Texan through and through, also, and nothing will make me abandon my home to the thugs.

We are definitely in a bad place in statewide races right now, but I'm with you. We have to register voters and help people realize that their votes *will* make a difference.

12. quam you raise a good point for dems in other 'safe' Bush states
as well. people and the party need to be deciding if our efforts are best spent in a neighboring state where the Dems are competitive and could take electorals away from Bush.
