Crowd Bashes Teen Suspected Of Being Gay As Smiling Dad Watches
(Kingston) A Jamaican teen was beaten unconscious by a schoolyard gang after his own father stirred up the students claiming his son is gay.

The father went to the Dunoon Park Technical High School in east Kingston and began yelling in Jamaican slang that his son is gay and that the other students should teach him a lesson. He said he had found pictures of nude men in the boy's school bag.

Jamaica is notoriously homophobic, and the home of several rap singers whose music has been the subject on demonstrations by gay activists in Britain.

The students tore boards off benches on the playground and began beating the 11th grade student while his father allegedly looked on smiling and then drove off.

But I've heard that in the wrong place (the people who told me this used the word 'slums') of Jamaica they will slit your throat just for being white.

18. I've heard the same thing.
Wonder why it's so different there? I've been elsewhere in the Caribbean and have never felt threatened. ??

3. They were given a stern warning????
THAT'S IT??????

OMG! I hope they have some sort of child welfare protection agency over there and the father loses his kid.

This is bloody well disgusting!

Sheesh, and I thought we were in the 21st century, NOT the 16th.

4. Well
Given the kind of campaign the Right is planning this fall it may push a lot of fragile people over the edge, leading to incidents like this in the United States.

And of course there are those who would oppose the right of a gay person to carry a firearm to protect himself from these thugs.

5. Im not perfect with math,
but if everyones got a gun, the gang still wins the fight. Or are you proposing that only homosexuals can carry guns?

6. Well that's what you get in the third world.
Jamaica is full of beautiful resorts but if you go in-country it is nothing more than a third world wasteland. It nearly is the 16th century there still. This is sad but all to common in less enlightened societies.

10. Nope, perfectly evolved humans can be this ugly.
Lets not forget that as republicans appeal to fear and hate.

12. People who are cool in every way can still be homophobic. My dad.
Sexuality is the hardest force for people to understand, especially in others. Like fundamentalists and religion, those who believe there is only one archetypal model and THEY are it with no allowance for variation in others must fear complexity. Or have some symbolism embedded in the topic that rattles their own self-esteem. I dunno.

'Erotic' is what turns me on.
'Perversion' is what turns YOU on.

My 65 year old father is one of the most progressive people I know. He warned me about a Nazi corporate culture back in the 70s.
He's so Green, he's practically a Luddite. Taught me how automobiles shaped and damaged humane living in America. Very keen sense of what is healthy for humans and what is destructive. But his identity is so wrapped up in his physical self and his love/sex life in such a blinding way.

He believes homosexuality is a horrible thing that could only be a reaction to being sexually abused. And that is a kinder attitude than before he fell in love with a woman who's brother is gay. He extends pity as a mercy to his new extended family. Yet loses all ability to be rational and articulate why he holds this view.

He is a verbal genius yet can't articulate why this is a 'perversion.' I've tried repeatedly to go through a Socratic dialogue with him asking why any consensual physical pleasure should be condemned. He can't even begin to go there. "It's just a gut feeling" he says and goes no further. Sad.

16. Didn't you get the memo...
Homophobia/Gay bashing apparently isn't considered bigotry. I got the memo... but I sure missed the boat somewhere. Small-minded asses.
