4. This is Dems Will Win, your local DRAFT poster extraordinaire!
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 06:19 PM by Dems Will Win
The DRAFT will be for those age 20 to 26 in practice. The first lottery if Bush is reselected will likely be in June, 2005 of those who turned 20 that year. If your birthday is the first ball drawn, you get #1.

At the same time, all medical personnel under the age of 45 will be forced to register for the Medical DRAFT and likely all computer experts, engineers and linguists under 44 will also be forced to register for skill-specific drafts (top priority of the SSS this year). Bush is spending $28 million to reduce DRAFT Activation time to 75 days by March 31, 2005. (sss.gov)

If you are 21 in 2005 you have a better chance of not getting drafted--unless Putin follows through on his announced challenge to PNAC's control of Iran and Central Asia. Then all 21-year-olds and even 22-year olds would likely be drafted in 2005, as would most men who subsequently turn 20 in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011--for as long as PNAC wants the oil. Half of those drafted are deferred for medical reasons.

There are no more student deferments or Canada.

32. That isn't how the lottery was done
The first lottery if Bush is reselected will likely be in June, 2005 of those who turned 20 that year. If your birthday is the first ball drawn, you get #1.

By the end of the lottery, it was conducted using two barrels, one with birthdate and the other with the lottery number. It made for better TV ratings. The first one drawn could end up being any lottery number.

I was in the 73 lottery, I think it was the second or third to the last lottery held. I ended up in the low 200s, I can't remember. A friend got #1. He received a new draft card changing his status from 1H to 1A (there were no college deferments at that time). He wasn't too upset (draft had already ended), but then the Yom Kippur war broke out and the newspaper headlines read "US Nuclear Forces Put on Alert." Now he was worried.

3. Hope this helps
http://www.sss.gov/seq.htm

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

Here is a brief overview of what would occur if the United States returned to a draft:

1. CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT AUTHORIZE A DRAFT
A crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Congress passes and the President signs legislation which starts a draft.

2. THE LOTTERY
A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. 18-year-olds and those turning 19 would probably not be drafted.

3. ALL PARTS OF SELECTIVE SERVICE ARE ACTIVATED
The Agency activates and orders its State Directors and Reserve Forces Officers to report for duty. See also Agency Structure.

4. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND MORAL EVALUATION OF REGISTRANTS
Registrants with low lottery numbers are ordered to report for a physical, mental, and moral evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station to determine whether they are fit for military service. Once he is notified of the results of the evaluation, a registrant will be given 10 days to file a claim for exemption, postponement, or deferment. See also Classifications.

5. LOCAL AND APPEAL BOARDS ACTIVATED AND INDUCTION NOTICES SENT
Local and Appeal Boards will process registrant claims. Those who pass the military evaluation will receive induction orders. An inductee will have 10 days to report to a local Military Entrance Processing Station for induction.

6. FIRST DRAFTEES ARE INDUCTED
According to current plans, Selective Service must deliver the first inductees to the military within 193 days from the onset of a crisis.

If you are in the medical profession or can translate Arabic, it will go up to 45. If they just want you for a grunt, it will end at 26.

is being spent to reduce DRAFT ACTIVATION time to 75 days by March 31, 2005, conveniently after the election:

http://www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html

The first lottery would be June 15, 05 if Bush asks for it on April`1, 05. He would only do it after the election, and will have to, given that there are no more deployable troops and he won't share the oil in Iraq.

15. I've never given Bush any credit for brains. Those who choose
to ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Anyone who has lived through the whole Vietnam era knows just what a powderkeg the draft was. If Bush really want a revolution in this country, then re-instating the draft is the match that will light the fuse.

...why would we not let the NeoCons get away with activating the draft?

We also let them get away with tax-cuts for the wealthy, the stripping of Social Seurity/Medicare, the passage of the Patriotic Act into law, and quite a few other things.

14. There will be no draft, calm down.
The military does not want it. As an active duty military guy, I'd rather have 10 guys who want to be here doing the job as opposed to 100 guys who don't. It would be our undoing as an effective fighting force.

Yes, we are spread too thin. The answer is not a draft, it is less deployments. That is why it is imperative we don't re-elect Bush.

21. My optimism comes from
the fact that the senior military leadership in NO WAY wants to re-institute a draft. They are all for expanding the size of the military to meet all of the mission needs, but not through a draft. Especially for a war that has been fought on dubious reasons.

A draft would be disastrous for the military, and so it would be disastrous for Bush. Good order and discipline would be hard to maintain, and we could very well degenerate to the situation we had during Vietnam. That version of our military could not have defeated the Salvation Army in combat, and the results of an all volunteer force have been remarkable. We are the best fighting force in the history of the world, but we would not be if we had a draft, and the Bush people know this. This is what I see being played out (Just my opinion only--I have absolutely no inside information):

Troops out of the Balkans within 18 months.

Drastic reductions of troops in Europe and repositioning to the States.

Scale back of troops as the election draws near, but a presence of about 5,000 or so.

After the election, we will start gearing up for something else, most likely Iran. It makes the most sense as we have the logistical train already set-up for that part of the world. The American people will be fooled again by something similar to WMD, probably "Nukulur" weapons. Enlistments will go up, stop loss will be re-instituted (because it will be lifted soon, just as the election gets fully geared up) and the numbers needed will be met.

24. How do you know that the senior military leadership does not support...
...the draft? Do you have a link to support your comment?

Point #1: The NeoCons don't care what anyone else thinks. The military will do exactly what they are being told to do.

Point #2: I'm sorry, but you don't have a clue about the strength of the U. S. military during the Vietnam War. The Salvation Army would have been nothing but a grease spot in the road had the U. S. military run over it.

Point #3: The NeoCons could care less about the quality of units that will be filled out by the draft and sent to the Middle East to garrison Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as other counties the NeoCons have targeted.

Point #4: Enlistments in the all-volunteer army are beginning to drop, thanks to the way that the terrible that the military is being used in the Middle East. Enlistments in the National Guard are already falling rapidly, because of lost businesses and other economic hardships suffered by the soldiers' families back in the States.

18. I wouldn't be so sure of that
First, we never did elect Bush*.

Second, the military probably does not want it, but it may turn out to be the only way to get sufficient manpower. They can't put holds on discharges forever and the re-enlistment numbers are getting bad.

Third, if, heaven forbid, Bush* is elected, I'd say it's a 50-50 proposition.

27. I don't think the military is in the driver's seat on this one...
There are a bunch of bratty kids in the pentagon who never served in the military who unfortunately are.

Draft militaries tend to me more democratic (Ceausescu was removed by the Drafted army) and have symphaties no diffrent from the general population.

A properly motivated drafted army is much better than a professional army. Just look at what Napoleon to the old Aristocraies of Europe. And how the Greek City States trounced the Perisan Empire during the Persian Wars ( 492-479 BCE).

I believe that the Bush administration will first redeploy troops, but any aditional foreign adventures will require a draft.

So, what's up with Kerry wanting a draft, there being draft legislation in the House and Senate all proposed by Democrats, and Bush doubling Selective Service's budget along with requesting members to serve on local draft boards?

Damned if we do, damned if we don't?

Oh, and how does one file for conscientious objector status? :x

30. That's the impression I get from..
John Kerry's plan will call on every American of every age and every background to serve. John Kerry will set a goal of one million Americans a year in national service within the next decade.

As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students and four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.
