3. The junior (and I do mean junior) senator from Pennsylvania...
...a pontificating windbag, pompous, self-righteous, snotty, a combination of the most superficial frat boy and the obnoxious patrol boy at your elementary school.

Santorum comes in for some special contempt in James Carville's "We're Right, They're Wrong," which is MUST reading for all DUers.

Is he just plain greedy or arrogant?

We visited the Philly area a couple years ago. It's terrible what Tom Ridge did to that state. The Repubs raped it.

Huge jails, bases, pig farms, etc. Lots of people looking very poor and angry. Even the rich don't live that well.

9. I think he is a descendant of Reinhardt Heyrich,
the nazi 'governor' of Bohemia during WWII, who was one of the most despicable murderers of that era.

Actually, I don't really know if he is related to heydrich; but sometime compare photos... It will scare you. He is probably proud of it.

14. He is probably the worst homophobe in the Senate.
Even worse than Inhofe, I think. And, of course, he tries to justify it with his religion. How unusual.

22. that's correct.
When the Supreme Court was ruling on whether or not anti-gay sodomy laws were unconstitutional last year, Santorum went on the record as saying that he hoped the ruling would be upheld, and then he went on to say something to the effect of "if you legalize gay sex, then that will lead to legalizing adultery, bigamy, and bestiality."

This wasn't just some careless remark like Trent Lott's "we wouldn't have these problems if we'd elected Thurmond" gaffe, either. Santorum stood by his words and made it very clear that he not only personally found homosexuality disgusting but felt it should be criminalized. So, not only is he a homophobe, but he also obviously believes that the government should intervene in the affairs of consenting adults.

Basically, he's the stereotypical Christian Right fundie demagogue (except that he's Catholic, whereas the majority of Christian Right figures in this country are Protestant).

That will take you to a site about him. Read the "etymology" section, in order, from earliest to most recent. It tells the whole story about why we all hate him. Enjoy!

21. Breast Cancer
A very distinguished women being honored at a recent Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation function shared her story about Santorum. She went to talk to him concerning medical treatment for women with breast cancer in Pennsylvania. Santorum told her that the women involved in the foundation should have a "bake sale" to raise money for women with breast cancer who don't have medical insurance. Swell guy!!!

25. One thing that especially frosted me
was his calling Ted Kennedy and Dick Durbin (both Catholics) anti-Catholic for opposing whichever reich-wing judicial nominee is Catholic. When Durbin spoke out on the floor of the senate, he was almost shaking with anger. And rightfully so.

So your burning is well founded...he's a lying, opportunistic scumbag. Among his other charming characteristics.

26. Santorum is a Tort Reform Hypocrite
http://www.tompaine.com/feature2.cfm/ID/4286

As a United States Senator, Rick Santorum has repeatedly supported limits on consumers' rights to seek compensation in the courts. In 1994, Santorum sponsored the Comprehensive Family Health Access and Savings Act that would have capped non-economic damages at $250,000. In a 1995 floor speech supporting damages caps, Santorum said, "We have a much too costly legal system. It is one that makes us uncompetitive and inefficient, and one that is not fair to society as a whole. While we may have people, individuals, who hit the jackpot and win the lottery in some cases, that is not exactly what our legal system should be designed to do."

But the same rhetoric does not seem to apply to Senator Santorum. In December 1999 Santorum supported his wife’s medical malpractice lawsuit against her chiropractor for $500,000. At trial, the Senator testified that his wife should be compensated for the pain and suffering caused by a botched spine adjustment, claiming that she had to "treat her back gingerly" and could no longer accompany him on the campaign trail. After the verdict, Santorum refused to answer phone calls asking what impact the case had on his views of "tort reform." According to his spokesman Robert Traynham, "Senator Santorum is of the belief that the verdict decided upon by the jury during last week’s court case of his wife is strictly a private matter. The legislative positions that Senator Santorum has taken on tort reform and health care have been consistent with the case involving Mrs. Santorum." In January 2000, a judge set aside the $350,000 verdict, deeming it excessive, and offered a reduced award of $175,000 or a new trial on damages only.
