After a few years of total despondency about the way this country was going, out of the woodworks a real social movements springs up as if out of nowhere.
A foreshadowing in Vermont, a while back.
A wise Mass Supreme Court, and a few good filibustering Mass legislators.
A San Francisco mayor, once smeared by the enemy guttersnipe Green Party, handing out marriage certificates like candy.
The GOPers scrambling for a response, and looking ridiculous. Democrats starting to get a little courage on the issue.
A few countries (Canada esp, which has actually led the way for us) have more enlightened laws on marriage, but folks: America is in the forefront of a progressive social revolution for human equality and dignity.
One more time: America is in the forefront of a progressive social revolution for human equality and dignity.
Other countries will play catch-up to an positive American social change. Call me jingo, but I'm rather proud of this.
ON EDIT: Another thing. A resurgence of grassroots Democracy, (self)organized on the Net. In fits and starts, and is far larger than Dean or Clark, but it's a coming. Again, Korea led the way last election, but watch the changes here change the UK and Western Europe.

1. I really appreciate your optimistic outlook. |

I'm 45 and was never politically active before. But this last year! I've joined Americans United and People for the American Way. I've donated to Dean and MoveOn.org. I've sent e-mails to my favorite progressive radio hosts. I've voted in the on-line polls and sent messages to my reps when requested. I'm hoping the World is getting the idea that there is a progressive movement going on.

you said. We are. As a black person, some of the supporting civil rights arguments have been long gone.

4. That's great, but unfortunately this is going to end up with a very sad |
|
ending since our party leadership is, ONCE AGAIN, unwilling to stand up and put their own asses on the line for what's right. I'm so sick of this.

5. What do you mean? They say "states rights!", those at |
|
the state level push the issue, Bush pushes forth and looks like an extremist, the Dems look moderate by comparison--and we get both progress and power.
Sometimes being mealy-mouthed actually does the most good.

6. All the doom and gloom here |

Is unwarranted. Good for you. I agree; change is in the air. It sure smells good.
