i would like to understand the issue of gay marriage and what rights are afforded to straights that are denied to gays. i do not deny that there is some discrimination going on here. i am unclear on what exactly is denied. would civil unions eliminate this issue? i do not see a constitutional amendment having a remote chance of going through. i hope that this whole issue blows up in the repubs faces.
thank you for civil replies.

1. According to the General Accounting Office... |

...there are approx 1049 Federal rights and responsibilities associated with being married. It is impossible to guess how many state laws are on the books. Where to start?
Social security spousal benefits; immigration of partners; adoption preferences; court testimony; hospital visitation...
Are civil unions better than nothing? Of course. But let's not kid ourselves: they are nothing more than marriage-lite... a new invention for the sole purpose of keeping gay relationships 2nd class. The only way to make sure our rights are equal, and can't be taken away, is through legitimate marriage.

Makin the issue one "of gay marriage" or "gay rights" plays into the GOP's hands by making it sound like special rights for a minority.
