And I may not be correct, but I don't recall all of the Democrats from Dixie who engaged in the filibuster and who, when the Act came up for a vote, voted against the Act, bolting to the Republican party. I seem to recall that at least one Senator (a guy from Tennessee with the last name of Gore) voting against extending Civil Rights to Blacks. He was a Democrat, and remained so until his death. His son served as Vice President for 8 years and ran as our Party's nominee in 2000.

I was pointing out that it is a good possibility that the 1964 Civil Rights Act would not have become law but for the efforts of the Republicans in the Senate, most notably Sen. Everette Dirksen. This is true even though we Democrats controlled the Senate, the House, and the White House.
