The Draft issue...started by Dems...?
According to this article that was posted by a repuglican...he is stating that the Dems are responsible for wanting the draft to come back...
Wha...?

I googled it and this is all I get...the same article...now on Salon I get something that the BushCo Administration was filling positions for the board but when I clicked the link...the file is gone...typical...seems that many documents that contain info about the BushCo administration are disapearing...!?!?!

I know this was brought up on DU before but where are all those articles now that said the Bush Admin was behind this...?

MEDIA ADVISORY:
Hollings and Rangel to Launch Bicameral Effort to Reinstate Military Draft

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. Fritz Hollings (D-S.C.) and Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.) will hold a news conference on Monday to discuss their joint effort to promote among their House and Senate colleagues their legislation to reinstate the military draft. Rangel is the chief sponsor in the House and Hollings the chief sponsor in the Senate of legislation that would reinstate a draft to compulsory military or alternative national service for a war with Iraq.

Sen. Hollings, a combat veteran of World War II, supported the resolution allowing President Bush authority to use force in Iraq while Rep. Rangel, a combat veteran of the Korean War, was a strong opponent of a similar resolution. However, both are in complete agreement that, if military action is considered necessary, then the burden of carrying out that action must not be limited to any one segment of the population.

WHO: Sen. Fritz Hollings of South Carolina and Rep. Charles B. Rangel of New York

WHAT: Launch of bicameral effort to promote legislation to reinstate the draft

WHERE: Senate Radio-TV Gallery (S-325, U.S. Capitol)

WHEN: Monday, January 27, 2003 at 11:00 a.m.

1. Yes, it's true.
Dems having calling for a reinstatement of the draft for months. It is the only issue that could ever convince me to vote Republican. If the Dems were to go on record as supporting this and the repugs as opposing, I'll vote repug.

6. This has been around for awhile...
And basically, I think Rangel is trying to bring it to a vote (he says) so there will BE no draft. Blacks are already disproportionately represented in the lower ranks of the military, rich kids will be drafted this time, etc...

I'm not so sure but what they aren't being a little too clever, as the next time there is a draft, if the privilaged are not included without deferment, there is gonna be more trouble than the GOP can handle...I mean, without undeniable national peril, the GOP CAN'T reinstate the draft, because, quite simply, their kids ain't goin'. Current chickenhawk GOP leadership wear no clothes on this issue!

In reality, only democrats have the moral authority to reimpose a draft-and especially a black war hero like Rangel.

Given the above, I think he is trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. So, like a lot of people, I am wondering what the hell is going on?

2. Yes, this was in the lead up to war
Rangel and Hollings wanted to end the upper class hard-on for war - If Mommy and Daddy thought that their precious little Junior was going to get sent to Iraq to fight, rather than some poor people, they'd be far less likely to support it.

4. You are correct!
Having to vote on the draft issue would force the bastard repukes to either put up or shut up.

I remember this well. IMHO, it was a smart move.

3. Draft board in rural upstate NY
has recently been filled and activated. This is as a result of Bush administration, no democrats at all. In fact, no democrats on the draft board!

5. Jeebus! Really? Is this an unusual occurrence?
Aren't the draft boards usually manned, or is this something completely new?
