Can Bush pull a trick out of his hat to stay in office? I heard that he .. |
|
Could use a special war time provision that would let him stay in office in time of war, is this true?

1. That would create near civil war. |
|
I would NOT want to be here if that happened. It would get ugly.

5. No it wouldn't. The american public would be more concerned about shopping |
|
at walmart.
The american public is drugged on consumerism and teevee.
Look at the numbers who get up off their asses to vote.
They don't care. Hell they all think OBL is saddam hussein.

now if Trista and Ryan split up, or whatever their names or, or maybe if another naked breast popped up at a major sporting event, THEN you'd see the sheep go mad? But mere dictatorial coup? Don't be absurd.

19. I'm generally a cynic about the public, but |
|
I think there would be a huge, huge public outcry if Shrub in any way suspended the election. Half the population would take to the streets in protest. There would be general strikes. It would be impossible for BushCo to put down without massive bloodshed.
We would have the equivalent of the "velvet" revolutions that took place in Eastern Europe and recently in Georgia (the country, not the state). I'd be out there, and I know you would be too.

11. not trying to be flippant |

but exactly WHO is going to revolt? Every rightwinger in the country would be ecstatic if Bush declared himself "President For Life". And millions of wishy washy suburbanites just wouldn't do sh*t about it.
Are lefty college kids going to take on the military? If another 9/11 happens they'll be rounding up ANYONE who goes against B*sh and if he cancels the election, is Daschle going to stop him? Is Kerry going to be DeGaulle? Sure, he looks a little like him, and he IS 'French' :-) but I really want to know where and when the indignation is going to rise to the point where we have civil war.
Why didn't ANYONE even REMOTELY revolt on Dec 12, 2000? I was in Lafayette Square, DC, with about *50* other people, protesting that day. Fifty people bothered to show up and scream about the biggest election theft in our nation's history.
Christ, 90000 blacks were sodomized by Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris and we did nothing! I protested in DC several times then and hardly anyone showed up with pitchforks and torches.
We are a nation of slothful and tv numbed morAns. Poll after poll shows majorities do NOT support B*sh's policies, yet he rams one bad right wing indignity after another down our throats and we continue to vote GOP. That's why I'd be very surprised if ANYONE rose up and burned our cities down if B*sh said he wasn't going to give up power because he's "The War President" and "God told him never to give up power again".
Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

Well, in my case, for instance, the price of goods and services has gone up so much since Bush I that in order to pay the rent, often I have had to take TWO full time jobs. The ones who are hurt the most by Republican NeoCon policies are the ones who have the most to lose by protesting. Were I to quit one of my jobs to work as a volunteer or whatever, how would I pay the rent? And I'm one of tens of millions of people who are in the same situation....
A lot of us are just too damn busy trying to scrape by to take up arms in the street. I think this is intentional, BTW. Back in 1968, you could feed a family of four on the wages of the father of the family, even if he was blue-collar. This meant that since it wasn't as expensive to just simply live, a lot of people had time on their hands and the comfort and luxury to use it the way they wanted. So we started looking around, wondered what the hell our lives were for, noticed problems, and started wanting to fix them.
That's when the trouble started. The government/corporate solution? Take their leisure time away from them. Make them so fixated on just keeping themselves fed that they won't have the time or energy to protest, look for a new way of living, seek the meaning of life, or lob Molotovs.
It worked. At least, that's my theory. I'm probably fulla shit....My wife thinks I'm wrong about this, BTW.

20. Sorry your wife disagrees... |

I, on the other hand, think you are right on. By hamstringing the lower class with the business of making a living, the ability to protest is eliminated. This shit has to stop. This country needs to take a long, hard look at the current wage laws.

3. He can electronically steal the election for starters |
|
http://www.blackboxvoting.comhttp://www.blackboxvoting.orgOr capture OBL right before the election, or invade Syria and Iran right before. That is just for starters. And don't forget we could be terrorist attacked right before the election. These crooks will stop at nothing to keep legally raiding the treasury with Halliburton contracts.

4. He pulled several tricks in 2000, he pulled tricks in 202. I am |
|
very sure he will pull a lot of tricks between now and next January. I doubt if there is a war time provision, else it would have been used during Vietnam. Of course, he could make an executive order. These creeps spent 8 years attacking Clinton to get back into office. They have the country under control and scared. They have the media under control. They are going to pull every trick they can to stay that way.

TXvote (275 posts) Wed Feb-25-04 04:08 PM Response to Original message 4. Patriot delay possible
Under the Patriot Act, the president has the right to delay national elections indefinately if there is "any perceived threat to national security".
Since e-voting is relatively new, there are no specific rules regulating a systems failure. I know that in my county, there are no back up paper ballots to use if say we had a blackout. We are 100% electronic now....... (Note: thanks TXvote for this help you rock!)

9. that's what i call verification! |
|
lol - i don't mean to be a dick or anything, but quoting another post doesn't settle anything....
does anyone know for a fact that the PA lets the president delay elections? by "know for a fact" i mean something like "can quote chapter and verse"....
if such a provision is there, it seems likely that the suprememe court would immediately srtike it down (upon its appearance in court).....

12. and during the civil war, iirc |
|
and vietnam. In any election during war time, war has been the major campaign issue.
Bush's war time provision is a recent one, one of Bush's making. He's just like any dictator, giving himself unlimited power.
War as a reason not to hold elections would be unprecedented.

but as other posters have pointed out, it would be unprecedented. But, having said that.....MUCH of what he has done is unprecedented and he could care less. I could see his puppeteers trying to do this.
I think the march against him would be the greatest, largest of all times. The merde would hit the fan.
Bastille day anyone?

|
Possibly Daschel could make some political statement like he did last week---Bush doesn't concern him too much being King, he is satisfied with the political situation as long as he can keep his seat in the senate
