I got a second Capital One call from India |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 11:56 AM by Mountainman
First I get a call from a woman in India telling me that I made a mistake with my on line payment and the bank bounced my payment back. Then two nights later I get a call from a man in India telling me that I am $150 over limit and .................. At that point I lost it and hung up on him.
I will no longer talk to people from India who have jobs outsourced from Americans. I am dropping Capital One and not doing business with any company that outsources if practical.
I suggest to all of you to hang up on calls from outsourcing countries. US companies might get the message that we won't do business with them.
And to those who have empathy for the Indians and Canadians who also need jobs. Well I just can't deal with that when we have so many people suffering in this country. We are paying taxes to support the increase in living standards for the rest of the world while lowering them here. Does that make sense? $87+ billion for Iraq while we have crumbling schools and roads here? Give me a break!
Let the flames begin.

1. I just paid off my Capital One card. |
|
Now that I'm free, I thank you for the knowledge of how bad a company they are and will be canceling the card as soon as I get my statement showing a zero balance.
Time for a Working Assets card!

5. Working Assets uses MBNA. Is MBNA any better than Capital One? |
|
I know WA donates 10 cents to charity for your purchases, but I don't recall MBNA being particularly socially responsible. Maybe I'm wrong though.

15. Maybe that's where Soros can help us. |
|
Instead of spending billions to help beat Bush, he can open a socially responsible American bank with American employees that supports Democratic and liberal causes.

Let's just say that my work experience with them pushed my politics firmly to the left.
I remember being called in to the division manager's office to receive my annual lecture because I always refused to contribute to their PAC.

I have a real problem when the LIE to you about their name and where they are from. They have called me after 10:00pm and they call me by my first name. It pisses me off the lack of respect. Now I just hang up on them I dont care who they are. BTW they are using my cell phone for calls also. But when I called to complain to the PUC because they are in India they cant do anything.

3. I got pissed and hung up on a call with Earthlink. |
|
My internet was down and I called Earthlink to see if there were any outages in my area. The girl on the phone spoke with an accent and it was hard to understand her, but I thought what the heck, at least she's trying. Well, she asked where I was calling from and I said Dallas. She said "is Dallas near Miami?" I said, "no, where are you?" She said "India" so I hung up.

7. Heard a story on NPR about India outsourcing ... |
|
the average pay for an outsourced person is $5000.00 US. My argument would be if you have such cheap labor, why are my fees so high?

if the bank charges 8% to loan money to people they should at least pay us whose money it is being saved in their bank a fair percentage.

8. We bank with our local Credit Union |
|
It's the one set up for public employees here in Colorado. Many of their employees have worked there for decades. They have car loans and offer mortgages and all sorts of savings and checking alternatives.
I'd research their stability carefully. But just wanted to post this since most areas have some sort of credit union. It might be a local alternative folks don't think about too often. During all the savings and loan scandals and subsequent bank closures, our credit union remained stable as a rock.

...not because they're cheaper. There is a difference. Besides, mine is made in Ohio.
Sometimes you don't have a choice. Go to your favorite retailer and try to buy a toaster, for example, or an electric mixer. Fuggedaboudit!
Incidentally, I transferred my Capital One balance to a card offering me 0% interest for a year. After that, I go plastic-free.

My ire is with the companies, though, not the Indian workers. They are being exploited, too. They have no labor protections, no worker's comp laws, etc.
I don't want to support companies that take away American jobs AND exploit workers in the Third World.

17. Something that puzzles me |
|
Given the obsession for secrecy of the * government, they don't consider it a risk to have so many American's credit information in foreign data bases? I mean, I know that we're urged to be careful about what information we give out, to prevent identity theft.
I guess I don't understand why it's supposed to be good to have jobs and knowledge shipped overseas. The corporations say they do this to remain competitive, but it hasn't translated into savings for their customers, has it.

21. Be nice to the Indians |
|
And the other off-shore slaves.
It isn't their fault.
The fault lies with the American ruling class. We should be more active in getting federal and state laws passed to keep them from messing with our lives and jeopardizing our country. Making more people aware of how corporations are government-created entities with more rights than human beings would be a key element.
Sadly, boycotts don't work too well, though you shouldn't have Capital One just because they will make your life hell for the smallest lapse. But all the drug companies outsource (that's how I lost my last long-term job and five subsequent contracts) and if you need the meds, you can't boycott. Still, it's never a bad idea to follow your conscience!
On the other hand, a few well-researched letters to your congresscritters -- even Republicans -- will have a better cumulative effect, especially if they get letters expressing similar concerns from a wide swath of the American population.
So, what do I do when I get a call from India?
"I'm sorry, I have to hang up now. Good luck with your job."

job. No it isn't their fault but they are part of the problem. Are they telling each other to be nice to Americans? They do not care about what happens to us. We are being pitted against each other. There needs to be disincentives for American companies to outsource. Some cost that they will incur that makes it not attractive to outsource. They don't have to pay a dime for the infrastructure or social costs of what they are doing so we should tax them some kind of social responsibility tax.

I'm not trying to let anyone off the hook, but venting on a wage slave is a lot less effective than pestering your representatives, or direct political action against outsourcing companies.
The Indian/Chinese/Bulgarian/etc on the other end of the line is the bottom of the "food chain." They get it from all sides, and their employers don't give a rat's ass if they have to take the heat. It's exactly like arresting pot smokers and looking the other way with well-connected cocaine kingpins -- a Republican specialty!
It's time to bring the pain back to the modern robber barons.

I think what you are proposing is an effective way to protest the outsourcing of jobs.
I love India and Indians -- but my loyalties are to my countrymen first, and I will not cooperate with foreigners who are working for the "Benedict Arnold" corporations which betray the economic security of Americans.
