College Republicans: reactionary 'hipsters'

---

We are completely absorbed here on Colorado campuses in the fight against a new wave of student reactionaries, goaded on by David Horowitz and his front group, Students for Academic Freedom. You might not be aware of this, but in the last year Horowitz has chartered literally hundreds of SAF and College Republican chapters on campuses across the nation. And they're raising hell. Recently the group featured in this article staged an "affirmative action bake sale," in which they sold pastries to blacks for 25 cents, Hispanics 50 cents, and whites, $1. Yes, really.

These new groups are focusing in on Horowitz's agenda, which has at its core the intimidation of academics, who generally oppose the ongoing madness of the political right. At my school the blood is already flowing in the halls, as the College Republicans line up targets like bowling pins. But after reading this article, I do have a few questions:

Is this even more pathetic than Christian rock?

How many millions of dollars did they pay for research to figure out that this was the way to recruit cynical college students?

Do they call each other "G?"

Is that a DKNY brown shirt?

1. This is the lamest thing I've ever read!
They are considered hip? Hehehe, by whom? Themselves, of course.

None of the college students I know are Repukes.

2. Noticed the shaved head and black shirt.
My local college republicans put out a ridiculous newspaper. Last week they had a cartoon entitled "How to Spot a Terrorist," followed with a series of arabic muslim stereotypes.

One article was entitled, "Positive Stereotyping."

Another was on "global cooling."

And another on recent archaeological studies of Noah's Ark.

14. Radicals?
"My local college republicans put out a ridiculous newspaper. Last week they had a cartoon entitled "How to Spot a Terrorist," followed with a series of arabic muslim stereotypes."

At the risk of being hypocritical to complain about people who wrecklessly bandy the T-word...these people really should look in the mirror when looking for terrorists.

3. I think people should try to recruit college Republicans
Get them all worked up and ready to go "spread the word", and then send them straight to an enlistment center so they can show their support of Bush and his policies in Iraq.

7. All the CR's on my campus do is piss people off
While us Campus Democrats are out there registering voters, educating the public, and trying to get out the votes, all the College Republicans do is piss people off. they have this shit ass newsletter that bitches and whines about how professors are liberal and has the slogan "we don not apologize" plastered on every page. Just in case people didn't know they were conservative assholes, they put on the cover - "this was printed on paper made from 100% virgin rainforest and is non-reycleable". Every now and then they'd protest a liberal speaker by making inflammatory flyers with targets on their heads. A great group of guys, if you ask me.

15. I know the chair of the CR's at my campus
and he is a really nice guy. I can even debate him without starting another world war. So far I have only seen him go off on one Rush style rant, and this is in rural Bible country.

Of course, there are those who serially take down any postings on bulletin boards that disagree with them, but the leader of these idiots is by far not one of them. Fortunate am I.

Quote of the day:

"Two cheers for capitalism!" (as in one short of the usual three)

-Chairperson of the College Republicans at Truman State University

Kirksville, MO

17. He was a "student radical" in his youth...
...and that's still the role he's most comfortable in, by proxy these days instead of in person.

Which mostly proves that he was just a jerk then, and his firmest ideology revolves around people paying him any attention at all.

13. Loved this part:
The goal is to get shut down, basically," he says, adding, "and then all the media shows up and we’re victims."

The group laughs.

That about sums it up. A group of people who think politics is just a game. Just a contest to see who can best spin the media.

Politics is much more than silly word games. People literally live and die by political decisions, whether it's cutting Social Security or reinstating the Draft.

I'm afraid these young Republicans will get a chance to discover just how serious it is if their leader gets another term. There won't be any college deferments this time around.
