Poll question: What is the most pressing news story this week?
What is the most pressing news story this week?

Which is most relevant and crucial to the everyday lives of citizens? I'm sure that the news media is giving the most attention to the most important one. not.

1. what about amending the constitution?
(duh?)

2. Of course that's not how the media have framed it.
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 12:37 PM by Gringo
And I have little doubt that such an amendment will NOT pass. The votes are not there. It's an obvious election year ploy to stir up the fundie nuts, no more, no less.

Even assuming that a person is against gay marriage, it's strange that it would be given as high a priority as it is, what with all that's going on.

Why would you want to work on passing some anti-gay amendment when our soldiers are still dying, our treasury's being looted, and the last vastiges of the New Deal are on the verge of being destroyed (which is of course, the true driving force of the GOP)

6. How about the fact that the 911 commission is not going to be extended
and continues to be blocked at every turn by the Bushies? How about the story that was barely covered that confirms the FBI knew some of the 911 bombers a year before? How about the story that Bush signed the war resolution in Feb, 2003, despite continuing to lie that "no decision had been made?"

And countless others. I agree the Social Security Story is critically important and I don't downplay the significance of the stated plans to ban gay marriage. But, damn, how much is being buried?

7. READ THE OTHER CONSTITUTION ACT NOT BEING COVERED!
Read the bottom section on 'The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004!

(We are living in the closing minutes of a culture war that the American Taliban is winning. 'Might Makes Right' is winning over 'The Rule of Law.'I've decided to post this synopsis in all my thread responses.)

Georgie's brain is much worse than you think and he's being used for terrible purposes. Here's a British clinical psychologist's researched analysis of the boy king. He interviewed Georgie's family, friends and such and determined that he was abused as a child and developed an 'authoritarian personality,' the root of fascism! Read it and weep for him and us.

And this personality is being exploited to further the creation of a Hitlerian Theocracy called ‘Dominionism’, which has been going on in this country for the last thirty years. Read it and wonder what the hell we're in for next now that Eugenics is domestic policy and Imperialism is foreign policy.

If you'd like to read the full speech of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia back in the dark ages of January 2002 when he said that 'democracy interferes with the Divine Right of Kings and he's doing something about it,' read this and wonder what century we're living in and just what that Constitution was for, anyway.

How can they get away with it when everyone seems to be pissed off at Georgie and we're supposed to be able to vote the bastard out of our White House? By fixing the electronic voting machines for 'the House.' Read this and decide which country to escape to this fall when Georgie is reinstalled to finish the job he was sent to do-eliminate democracy totally, create a police state, and conquer the world.

LATE BREAKING NEWS-FEB. 26 2004
Right now the Dominionists are introducing legislation to replace 'The People' as the authority in our democracy’s Constitution with ‘God’ in a bill called ‘The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004,’ exactly the opposite of what it really is. The legalities of the Christian Theocracy are being used to destroy our laws as if by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

This is not a test! It is absolutely real and happening right now while the media are busy covering gay marriage and Mel Gibson’s bloody crucifixion porn film, ‘The Passion of the Christ.’

“…on February 11 , 2004 Dominionist leaders in congress made their move; they introduced a bill in both houses called The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004. Among the sponsors of the bill are Rep. Robert Aderholt (Alabama), Rep. Michael Pence (Indiana), Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, Sen. Zell Miller (Georgia), Sen. Sam Brownback (Kansas), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina).

The House version is H.R. 3799 and the Senate version is S. 2082. The bill limits the U.S. Supreme Court and federal courts to hear cases involving “expressions of religious faith by elected or appointed officials.”

Although the claim by its sponsors appears to be that the intention is to prevent the courts from hearing cases involving the Ten Commandments or a Nativity Scene in a public setting from being reviewed, the law is drawn broadly and expressly includes the acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law by an official in his capacity of executing his office.”

10. Only Time Will Tell Which One is Truly the Most Important
But the most disturbing to me is the Howard Stern story. Howard has been obscene for so many years that I can't believe it's coincidental that he gets busted as soon as he start criticizing *B.

Now the right wingnuts want to put time-delay on all shows, so we won't be able to know if someone speaks "out of line".

In my local conservative newspaper this AM, every letter was against B* policies and the Iraq invasion. Seems like some Americans are waking up from their stupor!

14. Haiti.
Elements of our government have, for years, been covertly and overtly arming and training the lawless "rebels" we now see, once again, attempting to violently topple the democratically elected President of Haiti. France, for one, (who has less business than just about any nation on the globe, save the U.S., instructing Haitians how to run their democracy) is actually coming right out with their contention that Aristide should step down and legitimize this coup attempt.

Meanwhile, while being entirely complicit in the bloody (and steadily threatening to become bloodier) state of affairs in Haiti, the man sitting in our White House has the nerve to state openly and contemptuously that indigent Haitians should sit in the wreckage of their country and wait for the slaughter to come to them - he will not allow refugees on U.S. shores.

All of this, right out in the open, and it seems most of America has no problem with it.

16. Fed Chairman Greenspan's call for cutting Social Security...
...to pay for Bush's tax cuts for the rich should be a major story.

Bush replied that he wouldn't support cuts for those "at or near" retirement, whatever that means.

Greenspan is basically proposing stealing from the working class and giving their money to the super rich!

Grinchspan's comment is that either deficits descend OR SS gets reduced.
