Is getting a Divorce lying under oath? |
|
Marriage vows include "to death do you part." If you get a divorce, is that not evidence that you lied under oath? Did not conservatives have pastures full of cows when they thought President Clinton lied under oath? Don't republican elected officials go to every pain to not testify under oath? How does divorce uphold the sanctity of marriage? Is AIDS transmitted via heterosexual contact? Would conservatives have opposed freeing the slaves in the 1860's?
Bonus question: Are conservatives ignorant hypocritical humps?

I tend to believe people actually believe such silliness when they get married. But conservatives ARE lying assholes.

2. I think you are assuming... |
|
that people who actually believe that a marriage will last until "death do us part" are not acting irrationally; that they are not temporarily insane.

I don't think it's lying under oath.
Answer to bonus question: Of course!

5. Conservatives see divorce as a business transaction |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 02:19 PM by BOSSHOG
WHEN IT INVOLVES THEM. Does that rationale not negate any smarmy self rightous blathering about the sanctity of marriage? If conservatives were honest in their hearts and heads, not one conservative would ever get divorced. They can not insist that homosexuals can't get married when their history of hypocrisy drowns out their actions and their political chicanery.

Yes, it does. Marriage is a civil institution. They want to have things both ways. They're wrong.

someone echoed what I have always thought.
Folks don't see the hypocrisy of disallowing gay marriage. I know people marry out of love most of the time, but marriage is essentially a legal arrangement, a way to divide up property. Folks who disavow gay marriages are talking out of both sides of their face. Can gays not love each other enough to get to the point where a commitment is apropos? Sure they can, they just cant legally LEGITIMIZE it in a form called marriage. NOOO! The bible says that it is an abomination, a sin against GOD!! But just you try to take divorce away ( I don't remember God being too keen on that either).
Welcome to the United Theocracy of America.
I'm gonna go puke now.

7. You are not "under oath" |
|
in the legal sence when you get married... that being said.. it is a legally binding document/license which requires a Judge to grant separation. Also... only in court under oath or when dealing with federal officers is it illegal to lie... ie .. you can lie to a cop.. you cant lie to the FBI... of course.. the FBI can lie to you to get you to lie.. then charge you with lying... Under oath doesnt apply to marriage..
Even if it was, in a legal sense, the gov would need to prove you knew you were lying with intent to decieve at the time.. virtually impossible. .... ...

8. However, If you pass yourself off as a God fearing |
|
holier than thou Christian, you should not have to be put under oath to be expected to tell the truth. That is part of the halo the right wing has put over their collective heads. Ergo, when a christian falters (as they do everday) their fellow christians go into the forgiveness mode. Lets say a conservative talk show host spends years trashing drug users, then ends up admitting he is a drug addict. What do christians do - forgive him!!! Boggles my beautiful liberal brain.

10. I've been Suckered by the bait and switch! |
|
I was addressing the existing legalities... I thought we were fighting to get the Gov out of the enforcing gods laws business..
The solution to the premise you just presented, which is not relevent to the question you initially posed, is a further step backward on that issue... Also you do not need to be a Christian to get married...nor do you need a church.. or vows under god.. I was married by a Justice of the Peace.. by choice... I think it cost about 80 bucks to have him come out and wait around while my wife was an hour late getting ready :) she made him earn it.

12. But Christians use Churchs to validate their unions |
|
and they don't go back to the Church to get divorced. Where you get married is irrelevant to christian hypocrisy. I did not bait and switch, I don't know how. Existing legalities are irrelevant to christian hypocrisy. The objection to two people who love each other getting married is central to christian hypocrisy. The government has no business enforcing God's Laws and church's have no business pushing their god's laws on our government. Hate based on religious beliefs should not be codified in our constitution. I'm sorry if I confused the issue in writing because it is rock solid in my head and in my heart.

14. Well you started a thread about lying under oath.. |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 03:15 PM by zwade
So I took that to mean you were addressing lying under oath... in a legal sense. "Lying under oath" implies to me a gov. official putting you under oath... it also implied to me some type of legal sanction for violating such.. but thats just me i suppose. You were apparatently discussing Christian hypocricy as percieved by you ... so I'll leave that to others.. how various churches deal with their own people on this type of business gets into theology.. and thats an area I have not studied.. nor care about. Enjoy your rant.. sorry to intrude.

11. Well it is certainly lying to God. We know Chimpy has a Bat phone |
|
directly to God. We also know the DOMA is supposed to protect marriage. I think we also need to talk about the lying they do to God when they divorce.
NO MORE DIVORCE!!!! It isn't good for marriage!
