1. Dear Mr. Speaker,
I find your decision to deny the 9/11 Investigation Committee a sixty day extension in order to complete its inquiry into the events surrounding the disaster bestowed upon our nation on September 11, 2001, unconscionable. You cannot have any justifiable purpose to deny us, and history, every evidence to be uncovered in this investigation. The reason the committee needed the extension was due to the stonewalling by the Bush Administration when they were asked to provide documents and other evidences to aid in the investigation. Your act today, to deny the extension, appears to be nothing more than another stonewalling effort by this administration via the "backdoor," so to speak. For you to withhold from the people of this great nation the investigation of the facts surrounding the attacks we have incurred puts you in no better light than that of the attackers. How dare you deny us the truth? How dare you?

I urge you to reconsider. You are doing this country, and the victims of the 9/11 attacks, a grave injustice and history will not forgive you.

4. Speaker
Hastert, How dare you stop the 9-11 commission from getting the time they need to get to the truth about the 9-11 tragedy. But then that's what you're really afraid of, isn't it, the truth.

MORE CYNICAL WHITE HOUSE KABUKI: This scene from today's Washington Post piece about the increasingly embattled 9/11 commission is just pure comedy:

Hastert told Republican lawmakers in a meeting yesterday that he will not bring up any legislation to grant the commission extra time, said spokesman John Feehery. Hastert rejected a personal plea from White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. on the extension Monday, Feehery said.

"He still doesn't feel the commission needs any extra time" and he believes that the panel "should complete its report as soon as possible," Feehery said, adding that a later deadline would make the commission "a political issue" during the presidential campaign.
______________________________________________________________________
Right. And then Hastert laughed his Dr. Evil laugh and fired up his doomsday machine...

Needless to say, I find the idea of the White House getting overruled by Dennis Hastert utterly preposterous. The story is so obviously phony that it hardly needs rebutting. But I'll just leave you with this one thought: Given what we know about how much the White House values loyalty, and how brutally it punishes insubordination, why would Dennis Hastert's spokesman risk bragging to the Post about rebuffing the White House if the White House didn't want to be rebuffed?

I agree. Bush says he'll go along with the extra time and then has Hastert pull the plug for him so he won't look bad. Won't work!

"REMEMBER THE 9/11 COMMISSION!"

This is the rallying cry you will hear when we take back the House!

17. Love Letter to Hastert
This is cross-posted from the Aaron Brown thread--seems to fit better here:

Representative Hastert:

Sadly, I was completely unsurprised by your actions today denying the 9/11 commission an extra 60 days to finish their work. I guess I was a little surprised that the White House left you alone to twist in the wind and take the blame, since you're merely a tool who splits his time between his two masters, George W. Bush and Tom DeLay.

The obvious question is, and I'm sure you'll have thousands of angry Americans asking you this, what is it you have to hide? Why is it that you and the White House don't want the American people to know what failures lead to the attacks of September 11th? Why is it that our President and Vice President are afraid to testify to the commission under oath? Why won't they testify to the entire commission? Why won't they testify for more than 60 minutes? Again, what is it you have to hide? I think that the American people have no choice but to assume that the kindest explanation is gross incompetence on the part of the administration, and less kind explanations become very sinister indeed.

Again, Mr. Hastert, why is it that the Republicans are doing everything they can to make sure that the worst terrorist attack we've ever suffered is not properly investigated? Why is it that the Republicans don't want the American public to know about the Bush family's business deals with the bin Ladens? Why is it that the GOP doesn't want the American public to be reminded that George W Bush read stories about goats for an agonizingly-long time after he knew the country was under attack and before he went to hide in a hole in Nebraska? Why are we the people not allowed to know why standard intercept procedures weren't followed in New York and Washington? Why is it you don't want us to really know what happened over rural Pennsylvania? For that matter, do the Republicans and the President ever plan to give us the proof you promised us about bin Laden's culpability? It's been awhile, and I'm still waiting for that promised answer. Will you squelch the commission's answers to why it is that we can't find black boxes in the rubble of the trade towers, yet we found a pristine passport that belonged to Muhammed Atta? Will you hide the answers about those put options that made someone extremely wealthy? What is it that you don't want us to know about several of these hijackers attending advanced military schools at US military installations? How did Osama bin Laden fund this attack? How did he funnel the money? Who were the middle-men? Who were the operatives on the ground in the US, the ones that didn't fly on 9/11? Are they still in the country? What is the innocent explanation for you making sure this commission does nothing to answer the questions that we all have? Do you not care about the loss of life? Do you not want to prevent this sort of thing in the future? Would answering questions from nearly 3 years ago somehow compromise national security? Are we really supposed to trust you, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby, Richard Perle, Donald Rumsfeld, and David Frum with our national security? I have to tell you, you've been an utter and complete failure so far. Now you've chosen to go completely underground with your remediation for the failures, to handle things "in-house". Frankly, I don't think you're capable, I can't see how the GOP-controlled congress and the White House are competent to handle such important questions, and I don't think you can be trusted to do the right thing. We're taught in school to be proud of our country, our history. I can't help but think that future generations will be ashamed of this country because of the actions taken by you and your compatriots. You've brought shame to us all, and after today, you definitely qualify as a hinderence rather than a help. Why is it you refuse to do anything for the greater good of the country? Why is it that you have taken the conscious decision to disgrace yourself, your party, and the political discourse in this country?

Sincerely hoping for your replacement in a Democratic congress,

Don Claybrook,
Bloomington, IN

20. And here's the automated non-reply
The response could've saved lots of space by just saying "blah, blah, blah", but anyway, here it is:

Thank you very much for contacting my office about an issue that I know
concerns you greatly. Please know that I have acknowledged and registered
your opinion, and greatly appreciate hearing your views. At this time, I
am only able to respond to residents of the 14th Congressional District of
Illinois. If you included your name, address and zipcode in your message,
thank you. If not, please resend your message.

Thank you once again. Your comments are an integral part of the political
process. Without them, I would not be able to make the decisions that
affect our community and our nation.

24. I should, because once upon a time...
I wrote Aaron Brown a pretty negative letter. I don't even recall what it was about, but I think he deserved it. :) In any case, I should give credit to Mr. Brown on this one. He surprised me, and I think he did a good job of carrying the torch for the American public tonight.

Thanks for the suggestion.

19. My letter to Hastert
I have a simple question for you Mr. Hastert.

How can you look in the mirror in the morning when you get up to shave? How can you sleep at night? How can you feel what you are doing is "for the good of the country?" How can you do any of that knowing that YOU, and NO ONE ELSE has SINGLE-HANDEDLY DENIED JUSTICE TO THOUSANDS OF MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN??????? How can YOU deny investigation of the largest single loss of civilian life on US soil by a hostile force since the founding of this nation? How can you do it? Did you include your conscience in the deal when you sold your soul to Old Scratch? How can YOU continue to perpetuate injustice to so many people? How can YOU continue to endorse and assist policies that are not only NO GOOD for this country, but some of the most BRUTALLY DESTRUCTIVE in the history of the United States of America???

When you first took up your seat in the House, and in every term after, you swore an oath, on your honour, before God, that you would defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic, that you would accept that burden freely and without evasion, and that your FIRST allegiance go NOT to your party or your own interests, but to THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

How can YOU, you low, scummy, oath-breaking, honourless, worthless pitiful excuse for a human being sleep at night knowing that you have NOT ONLY denied justice to so many, but you have, ever since January, 2001 willingly, knowingly, and indisputably broken your oath in every way you possibly could and not only failed to fulfill your duties to your people and to your country but willingly abdicated them in favor of partisan party politics, greed, and a lust for power?

How, Mr. Hastert, can you reconcile with the fact that you are, without any doubt in my mind, a man who has willingly failed in fulfilling his most necessary and sacred duty to his people and his country?

May God have mercy on your soul, for Lady Liberty shall not

And without a SINGLE swearword no less.
