DU Catholics, tell me about the Catholic League.
I have no real frame of reference for understanding this organization since I was originally raised as an evangelical Protestant--now a practicing agnostic. My sense of this organization is that it is the Catholic equivalent of fundamentalist advocacy. For two nights now, I've watched that Donahue guy, who heads the Catholic league, on several channels just literally ranting and was pretty much taken back by the vehemence and anger coming from that man. I remember him from all full of outrage over Clinton's zipper problem and defending the priesthood over child sexual abuse issues. Every once in a while, he's on railing against choice for women.

Am I correct in my hunch that this group serves as political organization to push a fundamentalist-type agenda or is it a public relations operation sanctioned by the church? Is is solely an American organization? How much power does this group wield? Are the positions it espouses considered within the mainstream of Catholocism?

I hope no one takes these questions as a slam against Catholocism, but I could use a little tutelage in the organizational structure of the Catholic church and where this group fits in. Thanks.

Please take these religious discussions elsewhere. It's taking up to much time keeping up with important issues.

The Catholic League is within the church. They have the freedom to believe as they do. Yes...some can be extreme. The religious right is not just Evangelical Protestants. It's all religious groups and some of their leaders who go to extremism when it comes to their influence over others in our society. They want a theocracy not a democracy for our own profit and control.

They believe themselves to be the God chosen religious group...the only true religion. I heard a Jewish guy say, Islamic extremists in the ME think, their religious group should rule the world. Zionists, Roman Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah Witness, Baptists, etc. all think, they are the true religion and were chosen to rule the world.

This is why we need separation of Church and state. Church issues can stop government from getting anything done...with discussions about gay marriage, abortion, "under God" everywhere, etc., etc.

2. Yes they are very conservative
If you wish to know more about them, here's their website:
http://www.catholicleague.org/

However, this is not the place for discussing them. GD is for mainly political issues and theirs is a faith-driven group.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
