1. They also have someone from Georgia Common Cause
He's defending the machines. Why?

She's saying eight patches were applied to the machines in Georgia, none were checked.

Now talking about Rush Holt's bill - she wishes it included more robust auditing procedures.

2. Now the Georgia guy is saying there's "no harm" in printing paper ballots
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 09:35 AM by Stephanie
but he's worried about mechanical failures of printers.

*edit - OH, but it would be impossible to get the printers in time for 2004! Hah!

3. There is only ONE REASON why there would be resistance...
to improving a voting system from being tamper proof.

4. Georgia guy talking about the code
Testing and verifying code is overseen by a number of groups, anybody who wants to can observe validation process.

He's satisfied with procedures. More honest election than we've had in the past, he says.

BEV: Certification of the machines. She observed Sequoia in CA, which is what is being proposed for NY. You are not allowed to videotape test. They make you leave the room during the test. The test is ridiculous. It doesn't prove anything. Even if you have a ballot test, it doesn't say anything about remote access or triggering events. What about the reports that identify serious security flaws? GEMS relese notes show that problems not fixed.

5. Amy: What about O'Dell's support of Bush?
Common Cause guy: nobody really needs to steal an election, there are other ways to get undue influence.

re: O'Dell, it would have to be a fairly grand scheme to change outcome of thousands of unique ballots. To say that O'Dell could orchestrate that strains credibility.

BEV: What about Sr. VP of research and development who was convicted of computer crimes and went to prison. High ranking official in Diebold. Had access to everything. We have breakdowns at all levels. All we're asking is system of verification. There's a tremendous amount of money at stake. We just don't want to leave the doors open. One thing we must do, we have to get a report of the results at the polling place and post it there and compare that number to what is reported to the county and the state.
