So now he is Saint Mel?
From Catholic League president William Donohue,

<snip>
“We are at a cultural tipping point. Never has the division between the elites and the masses been more evident. Many good things are happening: the smack-in-the-face that the public awarded Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake; the public revulsion to the anti-marriage campaign; the firing of Howard Stern from many radio outlets; and, most of all, the public’s embrace of ‘The Passion of the Christ.’

“Saint Mel. That’s what he is in the eyes of millions of Americans. But for some, he’s Satan. Leon Wieseltier, the big fan of the Catholic-bashing writer Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, labels the movie a ‘sacred snuff film.’ Ex-Catholics like Maureen Dowd not only mistake the sacred for the profane, they think the film engenders intolerance when, in fact, the intolerance has come almost exclusively from the movie’s most vociferous critics.

“But this is good—the pus has come to the surface. Now we can get on with the real debate: should the culture continue its celebration of self-indulgence or repair to a culture of restraint? If the latter is to be achieved, believing Christians, Jews and Muslims will have to join together to defeat those whose concept of liberty is pure libertinism.

I believe Mel was making this film to please his dad. Or else he's still hooked on Cocaine and liquor.

11. In the interviews I have seen of him he sure looks like he is ready
to jump out of his skin. Someone on DU called him an " Australian Taliban " and I have been using it ever since. I would be glad to give attribution but I don't know who it was.

7. Without looking up the term on the internet
please explain what 'born again' is in your own words. Not an example of who you think are born again, not how they make you feel but what in your words is the deffinition of 'born again'. You might find if you investigated it that its not the 'born again' you really fear but the 'religious', there is a mountain of difference.

12. I know you weren't replying to me, but if I may give you my feelings.
I have many, many in my family who I would call religious and I can handle that. I might even say I am somewhat religious. But my experience with people who say they are " born again " is that they are trying to "save" others. They believe that they had a sudden experience that so changed their lives and they want everyone else to join them. They may have experienced just what they say and want others to do so but I don't like the attitude of some of them that you need to be " born again " to be saved, or even to be happy.

13. born again.
Looking at the world without the prejudices that were once in your mind. Being one with "Christ" and his view on the world. Take it as you want, but it don't mean going to church every sunday or looking down on those that don't wear 3k suits. It means being able to see the world with all its' pimples and helping take care of them. Least that's what I got out of it.

9. Re:Born Agains
They also scare me. I had a neighbor visit me after my dad passed away. He father had also recently passed away and she told me she was happy and she praised the Lord. She also told a story about a 22 year-old family friend who died tragically in a car accident and she was also happy for him. Totally bizarre.

6. William Donohue
is just a pure moron. He doesn't represent my beliefs as a Catholic that's for sure.

8.  "culture of restraint"
Every culture of restraint really isn't a culture of restraint.. It just hides it's doings all the while creating a false front of righteousness.

Also the culture's of restraint are the most violent, the most repressed, the most ignorant and the most intolerant.

I'd rather die with the sinners than live with the saints.

The best creed in my mind is the Wiccan idea of if it harms no one, do what you will.

We don't need some hypocrite minister of restraint telling us how we should live our lives.

And how they can support the idea that if they let gay marriage happen it will destroy marriage is beyond me.

The culture of restraint is the culture of fascism.

10. "repair to a culture of restraint?"...from this man who seems to be always
shouting down anyone who disagrees with him. I saw him (William Donohue)yesterday screaming his opinions on CNN....I have been greatly moved by the numbers of apparently loving, peacful citizens who have been hungering for the ability to get married...For God's sake let them!....Why should the government decide whether God approves or not?

14. this thread provides some great examples of anti-Christian bigotry
so why is it that on DU it's more acceptable to bash Christians than it is to bash Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, etc?

17. If I was a Christian I'd be offended by that
I mean I don't know much about saints, being a recovering evangelical and all, but from what I understand didn't they do extraordinary things to further the faith, were martyrs, etc?

And this assclown is comparing a has-been actor's attempt to revive a fading, increasingly irrelevant career and make a shit ton of money in the process with that? :wtf:
