Bush Seeks High Ground in Gay Marriage Debate?!?
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 12:49 AM by humble truth
Can anyone take this guy seriously? Bush asking people to take the high ground? His very stance on the issue means he can't take the high ground by default. Not to mention he's never been a fan of the high ground anyway.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Days after backing a constitutional ban on gay marriage, President Bush sought the high ground in the divisive election-year debate on Friday by asking both sides to avoid inflammatory rhetoric.

Gay marriage, first propelled to the foreground by a Massachusetts court endorsement and thousands of same-sex weddings in San Francisco, has overtaken abortion and gun control as the leading social issue for American voters this year, a poll suggested.

"This is a sensitive debate and it is important that people hold true to their beliefs without condemning anybody else," Bush said while meeting with reporters in the Oval Office alongside German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

"I call upon all sides in the debate to conduct themselves with dignity and honor and respect," he added.

3. English translation:
"Don't argue with me, I can't fight back anymore!"

Too late Bushy boy. You people already starting lobbing bombs at us, so all's fair that we return the favor.

5. High ground? Bullshit, he wants to see riots.
It wouldn't even be an issue this year if he hadn't brought it up! And I'm pretty sure he doesn't care about other people's feelings.

They have probably found some polling that shows a trend away from them on this issue. The fundamentalists really alienate people...and I think quite a few republicans are going to vote against the amendment, or at least I hope they do-a major embarassment for Bush.

I heard John McCain say the other night it wouldn't pass. The whole thing may blow up on them and I hope it does.

6. Bush seeks high marks with his christian wack pack.
I'm still waiting to hear what exactly Bush finds so threatning about gay marriages that he feels the need to change the constitution to actually ban it? apart from the obvious reason that it appeases the so called christian right wing homophobic wackos.
Regarding taking the high ground, didn't he used to do that back in the good ole days when he was indulging in legal and illegal
substances.

8. Welcome to DU and I think we need an ammendent
to guarantee accessible health care to all as a human right. But that won't happen. After they pass the marriage ammendment, what's next? I know for a fact that there is a wacko out there who is trying to get an ammendment passed to limit population growth. Now I am not against reigning in the population but an ammendment?? The marriage ammendment is as totalitarian sounding as the limiting the population ammendment to me.

9. That is a scary thought
It's very troubling that if this amendment somehow passes (I doubt that it will), we'll have broken through a wall where we really will have to wonder what comes next.
