People who think same sex marriage "destroys" marriage
I am wondering if anybody here actually knows anybody who believes that gay marriages will "destroy" the institution of marriage. Do you know any heterosexual people who think that their marriages will be damaged by two gay people getting married? Will they have to get divorced if gays are allowed to legally marry?

they must just be trying to distract from the fact that they probably facilitated 911 just like they lied about Iraq's WMDs.

7. Some right wing nut was on Bill Maher's show tonight explaining it.
Seems in ancient Rome same gay sex was around a lot. However, I have read historical books which say that the soldiers had young men with them and they slept with them. However, in ancient Rome, there was no penetration. That is a moders thing. So any, this person said that was why the Roman empire fell, and if we allow marriage here, our new empire will fall.

No I had heard Rome fell because 1 - they used lead pipes; 2 - all empire fall at some point. I love these republicans - they love to rewrite history.

14. Lead pipes...like the ones in our nation's capitol...DC...???
...the ones that are causing 10, 20, 100 times the maximum legal limit of lead to leech into the drinking water of at least 50,000 homes in OUR NATION'S CAPITOL...???

13. "no penetration"??? yeah, and "I didn't inhale..."
Not pickin' on you. Really. The history books you've been reading - it seems to me that they're, well, not going the distance (pun intended).

Actually, I think the rePubs should stick to the simple truth...the Roman empire fell because all empires fall...and the fall was helped along mightily by CORRUPT, INEFFECTIVE, SELF-CENTERED LEADERSHIP...

...hmm, sounds vaguely prescient, mm-hmmm...

10. Not exactly
Gay marriage is a sign that marriage, as socially meaningful institution, is over. If you buy into the belief that point of marriage is merely to contribute to peoples personal happiness through govt sanctioning of their pair-bonding choices then the corollary to that is that the government should no longer be in the marriage business at all. People have the right to pursue happiness. It is not the governments business to provide it.

IMHO the whole point of marriage (the women's libbers in the audience might want to stop reading right here) is to legally bind a man to a woman to encourage her to grant sexual access to a man for the purpose of producing and raising offspring. It has bugger all to do with making people happy. The whole point is to force unhappy people to stick it out and make a go of it for the sake of the children. That at least has a legitimate social good that is worth putting up with some form of government intrusion into our personal relationships. If it is only about the parties' personal happiness then government sponsored marriage is trivial and should be completely abolished.

Wow 6 word replaced. My spelling really does suck

11. Women's libbers? I haven't heard
that quaint phrase for quite a while. Actually I believe that marriage was to take care of property claims or something of the sort. I am married, though, and the recent gay marriages have done nothing to diminish mine. I just don't understand what the big deal is. I don't think gay marriage makes all marriages less of a socially meaningful institution.

12. Point of marriage=forcing unhappy parents to stay together?
"The whole point is to force unhappy people to stick it out and make a go of it for the sake of the children."

TRUST ME, this is NOT always desirable. I have seen very nasty arguments come out of this, arguments that make a debate between Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwell and a hard-core atheist seem civil by comparison. Sometimes sticking it out for the sake of the children just makes things worse. At least with a divorce the parents are separated and THE VIOLENCE STOPS.

I really, really don't think you would want to be a child with two parents who absolutely hate each other but who refuse to divorce/separate because of "the sake of the children."

Just speaking from experience.

19. Do I know anyone who...? Not here,
where we have one of the largest percapita gay/lesbian populations in the US.

But most of my friends are 'straight' (or "metrosexuals"), and to a person they can't imagine "Why anyone CARES who marries whom..." I am very proud of all of them.
