"Passion" mostly rotten
Just for those who might be curious, and insofar as it as another thread in the fabric of current political/religious chatter -- Mel Gibson's "The Passion" is registering a 53 percent "approval" rating at Rottentomatoes.com
(http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ThePassionoftheChrist-1129941/

which, by their lights, makes it "rotten." They have collected 159 reviews from reputable reviewers around the country to this moment, and 85 say go see it, 74 say don't. Interestingly, only 38 percent of the so-called "major" reviewing outlets thought the picture is worth seeing. Don't know what it means -- many things or nothing possibly. But there it is. By the way, many of the reviews are good reading... some great lines.

1. Say this about "Passion"
I see little passion for repeat viewing.

2. Agree.
It's a FAST cash cow, to fizzle fast. After this first harvest of cash, the main audience for repeats will be fundie perverts who will use it as a S&M tool to "indoctrinate" young'uns.

5. What's wrong with hating Xtains?
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." - Ecclesiastes 3:1,8

"Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies." - Psalm 139;21-22

If the god of the Bible says it's OK to hate people some of the time, who are we to doubt his wisdom?

6. Ah the abuse of the Bible
There is indeed a time to hate. Personally, I hate bigots.

7. Ah, the expected ad hominum defense of an impeached source,
coupled with a personal attack. Bravo!

Next time, try the "whatever" defense. It's shorter and just as dismissive without getting personal.

8. No attack
I didn't attack anyone. If we are talking hate, I reserve my hate for bigots -- not ordinary religious folk. Who do you hate?

9. I hate mushrooms.
I don't hate the people who sneak them into their dishes...I just get pissed at them. I don't hate the Taco Bell boy who just smarted off to me, after ignoring my existence at the counter. Wanting him fired doesn't mean I have to hate him.

The same goes for opposition. I don't hate the people who see me as less than human, but I do hate their ignorance, and bigotry. I don't have to hate Bush to see that he's a terrible President, and will destroy us if given the chance...I just want him fired.

They certainly wouldn't hesitate to obliterate most of us here if they only could.

11. Unfortunately
The groups of bigots and ordinary religious folk very often overlap.

I, for one, do not stop hating bigots if their bigotry is justified by their particular interpretation of their religion even if it is sincere.

There are a lot of World Church of the Creator types who really think they're being "Good Christians" by advocating the murder of Jews, Blacks, Catholics, Hispanics, Gays, et al. You'd have a hard time convincing them that they aren't exactly "ordinary, religious folk" because that's exactly how they see themselves. Personally, I reserve the right to think of them as dangerous, bigoted, whack-jobs who justify their hatred by any means possible and whose religion actually IS hate but they'd disagree...

12. As I said
I hate bigots -- those who hate people based on who they are. Some are Christian, some are Muslim, some are atheist, etc.

Ordinary religious folk have no interest in harming others.

14. Sometimes
I'd argue that being "ordinary religious folk" doesn't automatically mean you're not a bigot.

It was ordinary folk - both religious and not - who were the members of the Klan and it was ordinary folk - both religious and not - who elected the Nazis on a wave of bigotry.

I'd say that someone with a real understanding of Christianity is NOT going to have any interest in harming others. But, frankly, I've found very few "ordinary religous folk" who qualify...

16. But not all
and that was my point. Not that there aren't "ordinary religous folk" who aren't bigots. Of course there are. My arguement was that it is NOT a 100% sure thing. It isn't an automatic "seal of non-bigotry" since history proves that's not the case.

What are "Ordinary religious folk...?

Are extraordinary religous folk OK to hate? ie.,those that insist that I accept their ludicrous version of faith?

13. I don't hate anyone. I use my grandma's test for hating:
ie: if you could save someone who's drowning, would you jump in and save them, even if you thought you "hated" them?

I might not jump in and save Hitler, but I probably would jump in and save bush and maybe even Cheney (provided I could lift him).

That may not be the best test of hate out there, but it works for me.

I thought you were referring to me as a bigot. That may be in the eyes of the beholder, but I didn't and don't see anything bigoted in my original reply. In fact, it was a bit on the neutral side for me.

20. Haha, *I* Wouldn't Jump in and Save Shrub OR Cheenee
And as for the several instructions above (not in the immediate post being responded to), the only persons I intended to impugn were the Phariseeical practitioners, who are more "religious" than spiritual. And if it's not for me to say, well, it's not for them to say, either.

My friend and I are going in about an hour. I had to buy tickets a few days in advance - other shows sold out. (Here in the Pacific Northwest )I admit to being scared about the intensity of the violence - I typically prefer romanic comedies and hope I can watch it. However, if my Lord was able to go through it, what a coward I would be for not being able to see His story...
