who is the most revolting tv evangelist
I think its Swaggart - the sight of him crying on TV begging for forgiveness was absolutely stomach churning. He's back to his old tricks by the way.

16. Van Impe is nuts.
He's obsessed with "the endtimes."

Any and every world event becomes his latest "sign of the endtimes."

(News report of a natural disaster somewhere)
Van Impe-"It's just the latest sign of Jesus' second coming! In (fill in the blank vague Bilical verse) it says that our Lord..."

I really get the feeling that Jack van Impe. . .
despite being nuts, is totally sincere about what he's doing. What I mean is that he's not in it for the money, like 99% of his colleagues, but feels he really has a message to bring. That, however, doesn't make him and Rexella any less droll to this unwashed heathern.

43. Bob Tilton
My former co-vivant, who lived with me in Canada for a while, was a Texan, and had told me about Tilton. I didn't get to see him on the teevee until we visited down there.

Then one night a couple of years later I fell asleep on the couch with the TV still on, on a kinda two-bit small-town channel (that shows Star Treks late at night). I assume it went off the air to a test pattern ... and then at 5 a.m. I was shocked onto the floor by the sight and sound of what I first thought was Satan screeching at me from the screen. Fortunately, I recognized the face and shtick from my trip to Dallas -- even though he'd obviously had a lot of cosmetic surgery to make the eyebrows more Vulcan-like and the features more all-round ferrety -- and immediately realized it was just Bob.

One o' those famous USAmerican investigative TV journalist types dug deep in his garbage a few years ago and found heaps of bags full of all the unread letters from people who thought he'd been praying over them ... minus the cheques, money orders and cash, I assume.

Me, I like Swaggart. I figure that if you fell asleep while he was babbling, you could learn to speak in tongues by subliminal suggestion.

Excuse me, which way is the bus station?
Mohabbada boshabbada!

I am certain I saw him once being interviewed, in which case he was laughing about what he does, how he started imitating evangelists while in college, etc. YET, he continues, and undoubtedly viewers send him plenty of money.

"Duhhhh", is wallowing in understatement.

78. "Electric Bob"
My experience in a local Dallas television studio afforded me a chance to see a doctored montage of Tilton's greatest "spiritual explosions"...all set to fake farting noises. It was side-splitting. When he grimaced, a squeaker would sneak out. When he ran from set to set, a squishy fart sound would echo every footstep. I cried the first time I saw it. He is a laughingstock in Dallas.

6. Pat Robertson, Deserter and Liquor Officer
As a US Marine Lieutenant, his US Senator daddy got him off the troop ship en route to the fighting in Korea:

http://www.schlatter.org/liquor_officer.htm

As a TV preacher, he used the money to run for President:

http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/religion/televangelists/pat-robertson/

He used the money he raised by preaching the Word to buy into gold and diamond mines... in Africa.

7. James Dobson.
I know he's a shrink by trade and not a preacher, but he does his evangelizing nontheless. His Focus on the Family organization routinely rips off mainstream churches each year for what is a thinly-disguised PAC for the gop. Plus his PHD lets him have that thin veneer of legitimacy when talking about the wingnuts. He is the equal to Pat & Jerry.

8. Falwell
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 04:12 PM by Archae
Jerry Falwell, hands down.

He began his career using his pulpit to defend racism and segregation, using Biblical verses.
His church didn't let blacks join until 1970, and they were kept in their own little section for almost a decade.

He's made himself a fortune, and has always refused to open his financial records.

During the 1990's he used his TV ministry to sell that slander video, "The Clinton Chronicles," and when confronted about that, he would just make excuses.

He called a church that actually accepted gays a "church of evil," then lied about saying that until finally in court, his own words in a recording of the sermon where he said it was heard.
Even then he said it "was of no consequence."

On 9-13-2001, he blamed the ACLU, Pagans, atheists, etc. for 9-11.

Hollywood has never come up with a better caricature of a smarmy, self-righteous prophet for profit, then Falwell.

comes close to being as repugnant and hypocritical as they come.

31. Repugnant is an apt description
His organization is behind all those shoeboxes that school kids fill every Xmas. My kids did a couple, many years ago, before I learned that they add religious propaganda to each box before handing them out. We now make a donation every Xmas to a genuine relief organization such as Oxfam. I've never been sure that kids in poor countries really need to be reminded of how well our kids have it here, what with giving them photos of ourselves and trinkets and goodies we can easily spare. All right, rant over.

18. Peter Popoff
Though Jack Van Impe runs a close second(he lives local to me). Van Impe does not con sick old ladies out of their money for false hope.

Peter Popoff was a televangelist several years ago that had a faith healing act. He would appear to know who was ill with what disease. He claimed to be know this through god. He would then "heal" these people.

James (the Amazing) Randi took a radio reciever to one of Peter's shows. What he found was his wife broadcasting information about various patrons that had been collected when they arrived. Peter had a hidden ear phone that he would listen through and be guided to specific people in this way. Then with a variety of other tricks would appear to heal them. Thus lifted with false hope they would trundle off, stop seeing their doctors, send Peter more money, and die.

After Randi blew his act he went underground for a time. But Peter is back now last I heard. He is playing the same old games. Conning the same people. Unfortunately for skeptics we cannot be there all the time to protect people from these chalatans. We keep knocking them down. They just wait for a new audience and start again.

The Steve Martin movie Leap of Faith was based on Peter Popoff.

Remeber, he would have some deaf child come out of the audience, then he would rub the kids ears and head, then holding the ears, say "Evil Spirits Come OUT!" The kid would then look at him all dumb and then Ernest would say "Jesus" The kid would then go..."Je-Huz" Back and forth the two would go saying "Jesus" "JeHuz" and then kid was then healed! It was beautiful! Thanks for the memories!

I love how he wears those looong suit jackets to make his torso look like a taller person's on camera. And the toupée ... whew.

And now, anybody remember Garner Ted Armstrong and the World Tomorrow? When I was in first year university back at the end of the 60s, some anonymous well-wisher subscribed me to the print production, The Plain Truth. I suspected it was the residence house mother, whom I had suggested go to hell when she tried to make me follow their sexist stupid rules ...

55. But he opposes homophobia.
He has several times. He has criticized robertson and foulwell, for it. He doesn't preach hate, like many of them do.

I can't defend him on Vietnam. He did get caught up with Nixon, but regretted it later.

64. Exactly my point. Remember he is Bush's mentor.
He cons many, many people and is a major thrust in this fake Christian movement.

56. I don't know her name, but she's the one
who totters around on stage in high heels looking like she just swallowed a bottle of caster oil.

Choice number two - Gene Scott - one scary-looking dude.

Benny Hinn is just laughable. One of my all time favorite DU posts was the guy who said if the chimp found himself out of a job, he might consider becoming a "catcher" for Benny Hinn.

Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 11:22 PM by Dferguson
they are several that I can think of

Robert Tilton my grandma got caught up in his little scam

Jan Crouch I cant stand her. she has like a 200 pound wig and puts on makeup with a trowel ewww. she has real hair but yet she still wants to wear a pink wig my friend who used to watch Trinity broadcasting network told me one time.also cant stand her husband Paul crouch. heard he has several mansions from the money he makes from TBN.
Jerry Falwell seen him on cnn lately :puke:
pat robertson :puke: cant stand him or the 700 club
John Hagee he is freaky.
thats all I can think of I cant stand to watch TBN but I dont watch it though.
what I find funny is the tv evangelists that hold huge meetings and were they supposedly "heal" someone.

69. I like Jimmy Swaggart's music but he is part of the whole "movement"
Who do I dislike the most? There are just too many TV fundies to mention. They are all revolting. I like Billy Graham Sr.even though he is, technically, a fundie. I deplore Pat Robertson and Fawell the most, I guess.
Frankly, I almost never watch TV unless it's the news. Moreover,I stopped watching TV gurus a very long time ago.

74. Bakker circa 1980-81
I came home from classes one afternoon and flipped on the TV to see Jim & Tammy Faye acting all serious and weeping that they knew the end times were upon us at this very moment and that the world was going to be destroyed in the NEXT FEW DAYS.

75. It's award time!!!!
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 10:28 AM by Nobody
And now the badges of shame to be handed out. There's just so many hypocrites to choose from.

Jimmy Swaggart: Crocodile tears award, for castigating unfaitful spouses and weeping when caught with a prostitute.

Tammy Bakker: The Medusa award, for wearing so much makeup it would make even Medusa presentable. It was fun to watch her become moved to tears by the first song played on their show. It would leave ruts in the makeup. Think unplowed alleyways and tire tracks.

Jim Bakker: The Pass The Loot award, for gold toilet seats and his statement that televangelists deserve to travel first class through life. (apparently the rest of us should pay for their tickets and be happy with traveling steerage)

James Dobson: The Transexual Award. For an audio tape entitled (this is NOT a joke) "To Be A Woman", The intro on the inside cover of the package said that his expertise comes from having a mother, sisters, and other female family members. I challenge anyone to prove that they DON'T have these so-called credentials. And what of his expertise on being a woman? It's to justify the "Man is the head of the family and the woman must be subject to him in all ways" steaming pile. Gotta break it to you, I know more about being a woman than you do, Jimmy boy. I AM a woman.

Pat Robertson: The Thor Award. Thor, Norse God of Thunder, could toss around lightning bolts. Pat Robertson could divert hurricanes to veer away from wealthy areas and slam into more densely populated poorer areas. He boasted about diverting the hurricane, but left out the truth about where it did hit.

Oral Roberts: The 8 million Dollar Man Award. Oral is the one who used as his pitch for raising money: If I don't raise 8 million dollars by X date, the lord will call me home. I'd have liked to have seen his bluff called, but unfortunately, he did raise the 8 million dollars. Ozzie Osbourne sent in $1 with a letter about how he hoped that that was all he'd get.

There may be more, but this is all I can think of for now.

On edit: Added Oral Roberts

76. I gotta pick ONE????
Can't be done. They're ALL crooked bastards. The only "honest" ones I ever knew of were Lester Sumrall, and he's dead, and Gene Scott, who tells you up front that he's gonna buy horses with the money you send him...

Richard Roberts-crook. Gene Scott said it best "The 'Power' is not handed down from father to son, like Real Estate..." And Roberts has a LOT of Real Estate.

Rod Parsely-Crook who got in a fist fight with his builder because Rod tried to stiff him on part of the bill for his dad's 2-megabuck house.Has a multi-megabuck empire on the east side of Columbus OH.

Jimmy Swagart- "Ah. Have. SINNNED Agin' You!"

Jim Bakker-Jessica Hann.

Hal Lindsey-"Send me some money TODAY! We might not be here tomorrow!"

The Van Impes.

Bob "The Farting Evangelist" Tilton-Crawling around on all those prayer requests every day gave him ink poisoning, and he had to get plastic surgery around his eyes to fix the damage.

Benny Hinn, Ken Copeland, Dee-James Kennedy, the whole lot of them.

77. Van Impe's WIFE
She's such a superficial dolt. "Ugh the Democrats are spreading hate against our Dear Leader."

I also HATE Benny Hinn. He's an Indian (from India) who sells out his roots for money.

Evangelists should be dragged to death on the back of a pickup truck like they did to that Byrd guy.

The most evil televangelists are Dobson, Falwell, Robertson, and others.

However, Jan Crouch is by far the most revolting.
