Bush campaign gear made in Burma

BY LAUREN WEBER
STAFF WRITER

The official merchandise Web site for President George W. Bush's re-election campaign has sold clothing made in Burma, whose goods were banned by Bush from the U.S. last year to punish its military dictatorship.

The merchandise sold on www.georgewbushstore.com includes a $49.95 fleece pullover, embroidered with the Bush-Cheney '04 logo and bearing a label stating it was made in Burma, now Myanmar. The jacket was sent to Newsday as part of an order that included a shirt made in Mexico and a hat not bearing a country-of-origin label.

Among other things, the law bans the import of products from Myanmar, also known as Burma. The executive order freezes assets of senior Burmese officials and prohibits virtually all remittances to Myanmar.

"U.S. imports of Burmese products have been bankrolling Burma's brutal
dictatorship," said Rep. Tom Lantos, the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee. "Burma's major exporters are either owned by the ruling thugs or are intricately tied to the government.

3. Yeah, that was a good one
They put tape over the "made in China" labels on boxes.

Unf-ingbelievable what this crooked administration gets away with.

I only wish we could help the other 50% understand or at least make them aware.

6. This has got to be a Top Ten
Cheney: "You sure none of this stuff was made in Burma, Georgie?"

Bush*: "No, it says right here it was made in Myanmar. Say, Mr. Cheney, isn't that down in Florida where you stole all those votes for me?"

12. Powell proved that earlier this week when he assured the PM of
India that the Bush administration would not try to halt the outsourcing of AMERICAN JOBS.

I wrote my rag of a paper, the Indianapolis Star, because their was not one mention of this in the paper. Still isn't.

We have an administration whose main priority is(or should be) to work to make America a better place. Instead they work to make them and their buddies a bunch of money.

Outageous!!

8. Burma factory facts
In Burma, garment workers’ wages are as low as seven cents an hour, 56 cents a day and $3.23 a week. The workers have no rights, and even questioning factory conditions can result in imprisonment.

Source: National Labor Committee

The "Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act" prohibiting imports from Burma was passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by the President on August 1, 2003. The laws, which was to go into effect 30 days later, states: "No article may be imported into the United States that is produced, mined, manufactured, grown or assembled in Burma." The ban is to remain in place until a new, democratically-elected government requests its removal based on an end to slave labor and gross human rights violations.

9. Where is Kerry's stuff made?
Does anybody know... we should check before we get all high and mighty about this.
It sickens me that people are being exploited, anywhere in the world, I just hope our guys aren't involved as well.

11. USA
From the Newsday artice (they ordered stuff from both campaigns):

"The Kerry merchandise was made in the United States, according to Mark Weiner, the president of Financial Innovations. The company, whose employees belong to the Communications Workers of America Union, sources most of its merchandise from union factories.

"It's becoming more difficult to find American-made union product, especially in textiles, but you just have to look. We pay more money for them, so we make a smaller profit margin," said Paul McConnell, Financial Innovations' vice president."

Simply amazing...they must be busy ripping off the Burma tags and sewing on Made in the USA tags.

ANYONE with common sense knows that they won't have a "few" pullovers made in Burma and the rest in the USA.

The truth is probably they were ALL made in Burma and, a la the China boxes, the tags were changed to made in USA.
