Poll question: Should Iraq be allowed to have elections right now? |
|
During the protests Saturday, one question was brought up about the possiblity of elections in Iraq. However, this person - who opposed the war from the start - thought that if we were to allow for elections, this would allow the establishment of an Islamic fundamentalist state similiar to that of Iran.
I'm sure that the overwhelming majority of us oppose the war, including myself. However, I thought I should share the question with the rest of us over here and ask if you think we should allow for elections right now.

1. I didn't vote, but I did want to express an opinion. |
|
If the vote were taken in Iraq today, there will be a backlash vote and we will probably end up with a cleric in office. Then, in a few years, we'll have a repeat of Iran.
I think the U.S. should turn over the operations to the U.N. and show some signs of pulling out in order to appease the people of Iraq, and hope for some sensible Iraqi leader to stand up and lead the country. The country will have some money to begin rebuilding. (anyone who thinks we're getting out of this without some kind of reparations to Iraq, isn't really understanding the depths of the Bush Administration's blooper) Perhaps, this time, the U.N. can supervise to make sure that it gets to the right people. What Sadaam did in the past with the money he got from the humanitarian aid is still an unknown. It certainly wasn't going to his people, and it certainly wasn't going into WMD.

who the hell do we (the US ) think we are to allow or disallow the people of Iraq to do anything? It's that kind of arrogance that has helped to propel the US into the position of 'Most Hated Country on the Planet'.

It's this attitude that we have to tell these poor Iraqis what to do, that it's up to us to decide what they can and can't do because they are primitive savages who have to be taught how to be real people, that is, liberal democracy and capitalism, that is the reason US policies are doomed to not just failure but disaster.

there should be an immediate pullout of all foreign troops from Iraq together with the payment of war reparations to the country and provision of civilian aid for rebuilding what was destroyed over the last 13 years. The Iraqis should of course be able to have an election whenever they choose.

but they won't. Bushco will not allow them a real democratic vote because he nows damn well that Sastani will win that free election. Bushco didn't invade Iraq to bring them Democracy. US troops will be in Iraq for at least the next 10 years whatever party is in power in the USA. The American Oligarchy will not allow Iraq to have the power to get rid of the Multi-corps and US domination.
