I'm really impressed with AirAmerica
Listened all day at work, and am looking forward to Atrios coming on in a few minutes.

I had worried that it would be liberal droners--people whose politics we liberal admires, or who are great in print, but horrid on the air. But the thing is, despite being still new and rough around the edges--it's not perfect--it's really decent radio.

You can listen to it for hours at either low or high levels of attention (I spent all day coding to Randi Rhodes). It's entertaining, funny, chatty, all that.

To those who want to to be Pacifica radio writ large are deeply, deeply deluded. I agree with all that stuff, but Pacifica is boring as all hell: it's fine when I need that moment of enlightenment, but when I want to devote that much attention to either thought or sloganeering, I'll read, not listen.

Randi Rhodes was also by far the best. She has that most rare of gifts: the ability to be very entertaining while bullshitting about nothing. (The guys she slept with, chewing Nicotine gum, etc.) She sounds like a regular woman, the kind who's great to chat with at a BBQ and is a blast at parties, but who has seen some stuff. The antitode to the false liberal caricature.

She offers up great water cooler talk, good information, and frankly entertaining talk that doesn't make you tune out with left-wing boilerplate that even we progressives can get tired of after a while. She's human: she's pissed at that asshole Ralph, and so she yelled at him.

Those who are pissed by her emotion and her anger--man, I don't have words for the delusion you all are working under. Go trot around the Lyceum by yourself while the world burns; I'll listen to Rocking Randi, laugh and cry my ass off, and know that millions of others are doing the same--or will be doing the same, once they hear.

Voices like hers are the arsenal of a progressive America.

(I cringe when I think of the idea of the critics of AA here on DU making their own radio show. God, what an utter disaster that would be! Alternating between SLOWLY reading Nation editorials, and screaming out the latest from ZMag. Way to change the world!)

1. Whats the frequency, Kenneth?
No kidding does anyone know what cities, times, and frequencies for the show. I should be able to dial it up on my HF transceiver. Thanks in advance if anyone has a schedule with this info.

Don

9. Randi is great
I've listened to Randi when she was in Florida. The unsuspecting
right winger or useful idiots like Ralph are in for a real surprise when they hear this lovely young lady blast REAL facts and figures at them like a machine gun. An example is how she caught Oliver North off guard when he thought he could waltz in on her program and dazzle her with his BS. Old Ollie pulled an O'Reily and stormed off when confronted. Randi takes no prisoners, that's for sure.

I predict Randi will become a household name quickly.:yourock: RANDI

10. We always talk about Dems needing to get tough
then one does and people bitch. Randi is great--far more effective than some left-wing printed screed.

If Only they'd get Neil Rodgers!!!

11. Yep yep yep..they're B-R-O-A-D casting...
The folks who want more 'substance' and less humor just don't 'get it'. M-A-S-S media...delivering an audience to the adverisers is how shows stay on the air. I think Air America has made a great start.

12. They better add email addresses to contact them
So far, all Franken has is a snail mail addy. Not good. I wanted to send an email and was shocked, yes shocked! No email! :argh:

But I'm sure they'll get it together soon. I really enjoyued today. And Franken is now on MSNBC with Norville. A great interview and a terrific start for the A-A network!

16. They'll do it
Funny but right now, someone on Norville's program told Al he'd be receiving all sorts of emails - and he said he hoped so. I bet they'll have us all set before too long.

14. I just got home from work... :D :D :D :D :D
There's no sound card in my work computer. I live in rural Texas where even the music stations I can get have vocally conservative DJ's. I've been listening rapt on my home computer and I'd probably be moved to tears if my daughter wasn't sitting by me (Dad's a tough guy, damn it!).
I feel like Jodie Foster in the movie Contact. What a great, great day this is. Thank you, Air America!!!! :loveya:

15. A Portland review
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 10:16 PM by mouse7
Remember, in Portland we're not quite getting the same line-up, and some on delay

Franken. An excellent anchor for the network. We have to remember that we progressives are the good guys, so someone has to play the role of the lovable rascal and be less agressive rhetorically. Franken is the perfect front person for the network.

Ed Shultz - Not AA. He's good, but not great.

Randi Rhodes - An excellent working class streetfighter. NPR listeners, change channels, listen to Yanni, make some asparagas something. You only tolerate the working class Dems because you think it makes you a better person. Working class people aren't who you would prefer to hang out with. Find something else to do. You won't like her. Us working class Dems know we are 80% of the party. Randi is our voice.

Won't hear Janeane Garofalo for a while yet here. It's on delay.

(on edit: It looks like the Portland station doesn't even know it's lineup yet, as we're now getting the 1 hour show that will be based in LA now... Will Pitt is on right now.)

24. mouse, a Dem bud said Randi turned him off
She totally threw him for a loop when he listened in for the first time and heard her chewing out Ralph Nader (damn, I missed that part.)

Randi is a fighter. If you don't want to fight to make things right, if you want to intellectualize to death and watch Bush get another 4 years in office, go for it. I want to fight.

Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 09:55 PM by Pikku
Asking them to carry Air America radio. I point out that I listen online and would, ahem, welcome the opportunity to listen in my car. With advertisements.

OK, big Edit, Mouse7. I turned off NPR to hear Air America. You are dead on. I'll point that fact out during the next fund drive.
