17. God yes!
How I miss Mike. He's basically kept me from slitting my wrists all this time. I can't describe how relieved I was when I found his show about two years ago. I live in upstate NY which is wickedly conservative and pro-Bush (despite the alarming rural poverty around here, these people are still decidedly pro-repuke). I really felt alone in the wilderness. Finding Mike was wonderful; I finally knew that other people were as apalled and angry at what was going on as I was. It was like a social club for the disenfranchised.

3. I think we can do without the "fat" remark.
Unless we're talking about Karen's fat head. }(

Let's just hammer them on the issues and their policies.

Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 11:03 PM by boobooday
Talking about how she is SO CONCERNED that the number one show among Arab males is BAYWATCH. How sad! American are spreading sex! (yes, she actually said that)

hahahahaha

I thought we were spreading American values? I guess we're just bouncing our boobies and spreading our legs. Sounds better than bombing to me.

She is a way stupid hag.

7. What is it with these rightwing-nuts ...
and their irrational fear and loathing of sex? It's a perfectly natural, human experience! It's not dirty, it's not naughty, it's not sleazy ... it's simply nature - and if it didn't exist, none of us would be here! :eyes:  :eyes:

9. "witch"
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 11:21 PM by WitchWay
Is "WITCH" supposed to be an insult? Why, that's funny because I am a witch. I find your use of "witch" as an insult pretty damn insulting myself.

Oh, "HAG" - oh, that's great too! By "HAG" what do you mean, may I ask?

I have to admit, you sure know how to use language in a most patriarchical manner! You must be proud of yourself.

11. oh get over it!
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 11:27 PM by DinoBoy
You know full well the common useage of witch. If you chose to ignore the fact that a religious witch and a vernacular witch are not the same thing, then you should call yourself something else.... He obviously didn't mean YOU.

It would be like me joining a religion and calling myself a rapist, and then getting offended at people using the word rapist in a derogetory manner....

14. Common Usage
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 12:08 AM by WitchWay
I know that the common useage of the word witch is often a substitute for the word "bitch", which is sexist langauge in and of itself. I am not accusing the poster of using "WITCH" as a euphemism for this word though, but I am saying that even so, it is insensitive to witches (and ignorant about historical patrirachical oppression).

The word was especially troubling since it was also used with the word "hag" which is a patriarchical term for a sometimes "unpleasant" often "old" or "ugly" women. So, this term (used as an insult) is not only sexist, but it is age discriminatory as well. My previous posting was based in light of both these language usages.

Indeed your posting in which you are trying to equate someone choosing to be a "witch" with someone chosing to be in a religion in which they are called a "rapist" is extremely offensive. Your "analogy" shows extreme insensitivity towards women, rape victims and those who struggle against patriarchical oppression.

Indeed, the very reason the term "witch" is used perjoratively is rooted in the patriarchical oppression that includes a history of violence towards and persecution of women. This history includes the brutal and sad history of witchhunts that occured throughout the past millenium and singled out women as targets of punishment (often by death) and derision.

22. Then if you think I'm such an insensitive sexist bafoon then alert my post
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 09:07 AM by DinoBoy
Because every man has to be a sexist.

Because I can't possibly point out to you that calling yourself a witch and then expecting to be not offended by people using the term in its common way is absurd.

Because no woman could ever possibly be a bitch.

Because I was obiously not being insensitive to rape victims even though you couldn't possibly see that.

Because every disagreement, no matter how petty, ALWAYS has to do with patriarchal oppression.

And because hag only refers to women, and never jawless boneless fish covered in mucus eating decaying fish, which is what I always think of when I think of hag:

But maybe I'm just a nerd....

23. I'd rather not
I'd rather not alert your post, because I'd rather things be in the open and discuss the issue. I don't feel that cover up is productive.

All men are sexist? Funny, I know men who are feminists. So, no I DON'T think men are inherently sexist or baffoons or insensitive. As a matter of fact, I think that men suffer greatly under patriarchy, too. Just in different ways. I think patriarchy is harmful to all genders. I would never say that men ARE patriarchy, as you could see from my posts.

I still believe you were being insensitive to rape victims and women in your posting, though. You attacked the word "witch" (a word and tradition many women fighting patriarchy wish to reclaim) by equating it with the word rapist (a word which implies violence, misogyny and often hatred towards women). Rape is a violent and humiliating act many women have painfully experience. So, I think that your post was insensitive.

Hag is very closely related to the word witch. What happened in the witch hunts in Europe (which spilled over to other places and times) is a very sad and destructive period in history, for both men and women. Patriarchy was involved in ostracizing, oppressing, punishing, marginalizing and even killing women -- especially women with knowledge of herbs or medicine, older women who were part of a more matriarchical society, women who held non-Christian religious beliefs, pagans (or country people) and especially women who held power or commanded respect in their communities. The witch hunts were (and are) about imperialism, and imperialism has a very close affinity with patriarchy.

Many people don't have a good understanding of the witch hunts and the imperialisitc and patriarchical forces that drove them, and other horrific events in our history.

15. Thank you!
Thank you for your support. I don't blame you for needing to read the news instead. I often avoid these issues, but sometimes I just have to jump in and protest.

I don't think people are really meaning to be bad, most people really just have no understanding about patriarchy and everything that it entails. (Although, there are those who knowingly and cognizantly participate in sexism).

When I was younger, I know I engaged in sexist language/thinking toward woman(and I AM a woman)! I am STILL guilty of this sort of thing sometimes.

Understanding patriarchy takes a lot of time, patience and emotional energy. The schools, for example, teach us to view history from a male-patriarchical understanding, and to respect/worship male leaders. This sort of thing twists us into a warped patriarchical world-view. And that's just one example.

19. I'm glad you said that, because that is exactly the way I feel.
I was in all day and listened to every minute. I wasn't bored. I enjoyed all of it. And I am looking forward to listening tomorrow. It's so good to have an all-day source for good conversation and un-spun news. Glad to see I'm not the only one to feel this way.

20. I honestly can't remember the last time I listened to radio.
OK, granted, I had to listen to streaming radio, but I gave up listening to the radio in the car, because I would become so inflamed and angry and irritated that it ruined my commute. I would just load up the CD player and try to relax.

I'm seriously, seriously thinking of subscribing to the X-FM service (or whatever it's called) just so I can be happy while driving to work again...
