so which radio show did you like best
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 12:52 AM by ann_coulter_is_a_man
i have to go with the majority report-of course, as a massive janeane fan, i'm a little biased, but I think she seemed the most comfortable with the format. And the show seemed liberal first and foremost and will be more issue based, rather than just an add for the DNC (which I have no problem with, I just want a show that will aim to keep progressive issues on the party agenda) i appreciated the focus on rightwing media criticism-and she played wilco as bumper music!

franken was good, but seemed a little awkward at radio, but I think he'll improve quick and will be great.

as for randi rhodes, she was the low point in my opinion. too shrill for my taste and the nader 'interview' was too hannity-esque and really bugged me. though i think she has her moments and i welcome her on the radio over the rightwing dreck we have here.

overall, i give it an A+ it's been a great day

anyone know when we'll get more stations? we need this in wv-we're a battleground state, dammit!

1. Randi Rhodes towers over all of them--She has by far the most talent
She can just talk about anything and it's entertaining, and she can suddenly piledrive into someone with rhetoric and logic and a little screaming--it's really amazing.

5. the nader thing bothered me, but i do enpoy her for the most part
she can be be very funny and is a natural-talent. i'd prefer she be more critical of party leaders when they're spineless and ease up on the shrillness, but that's just my opinion.

still it's good to have her on. a little something for everyone

7. She'll criticize spineless Dems, just as she mocks GOP shills
like Nader, or GOPers like Oliver North, whom she tore into once.

It's her first day, and she did great.

i was a bit harsh earlier cuz i was a little annoyed

i may disagree with her, but the dems desperately need a cheerleader to fire up the base. and she does a great job of doing that

15. Not just the choir--for nonpolitical folks
she makes bitching about politics in a liberal way FUN. A little bit like Stern.

I also think she's smart and right, which helps.

11. I agree - she is a great radio talent - as is Limbaugh
DON'T FLAME!!! Be realistic - whether it be voice quality, personality, or views - they are both major league. I may detest L, but there is no denying his talent to suck people in.

I have done voice work since HS - I believe I know talent. She's GOT IT!!!
Garafalo also has GREAT potential (and she's almost there) she, if she chooses to stick with it, will be brilliant within a month or two - she reeks of intelligence and charisma!!

17. Agree entirely. Noticed this with Schultz who really is
the left wing Limbaugh. Limbaugh's a horrible dope field but he has a good voice for radio and spouting off bullshit.

Rhodes is FAR better and she's cleverer, but they're both built for the medium.

Garafalo--I don't know. She's certainly got the charsima, but I don't know if it'll be enough... well, we'll see...

16. American Preoccupation: "Entertainment"
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 01:03 AM by BeHereNow
I want to be "entertained."
My country is falling apart at the seams, please
entertain me.
I want to watch Surivor and Jerry Springer.
I want my talk show hosts to blugdeon others
with aggressive verbosity- the louder the better.
Never mind that I have the same taste as
those Right-wing people I claim to be so different from.
I can not tolerate the same behavior from
Bill O'really, BUT when a "Left" wing host froths at the
mouth, I am "entertained." It is my right- after all,
I am an American.

Sorry, but frankly I find the "Left" wing attraction to a shill
no different than the "Right" wing attraction to the same
type of shills. What has this country come to when rudeness,
"I can out shout you anyday" and "I'm a bully" entertaining?
An ancient philosopher taught that the fall of a civilization
can be forecast by what its' citizens consider "entertaining."
From the number of Rhodes and O'Really fans in this country,
I'd say, "We haven't far too go- fall wise"
The ironic thing to me is that neither side recognizes the
collective neurosis that grips them equally.

18. Mescaline Does Wonders
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 01:08 AM by WillyBrandt
Please. What pompous baloney. You're talking about everything wrong in this country, but like it or not things like this form the necessary founding to put things right. Bitching like a purist ideologue on DU doesn't do anything; broadcasting does, airing views does. And broadcasting works far better when the masses of people are attracted to listen to it.

And it's cute how you caricature a view before attacking it (strawmen can't fight back, I suppose). I'm drawing no moral or intellectual equivialency between the left and the right; I'm saying the passion, and the willingness to be verbally brutal, exists in great profusion on the right, and without it progressive ideals will remain nothing more than ideals.

In Dream World, that's fine. But on earth, we need the passion, the anger, and the bite to get anything done.

But I'm missing the point, aren't I? The point is to bitch and moan online, and feel superior to the enthusiastic proles on here. Knock yourself out.

24. The Anger, the Bite?
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 01:25 AM by BeHereNow
I have met Amy Goodman, Kathy Kelly, Will Pitt,
Kevin Phillips and MANY others who are making a difference.
Fortunately, they actually are transmitting INFORMATION-
not "verbal brutality."
They are calm, gracious people speaking the truth
and making a difference.
Brutality is the last resort of a coward, my friend-
if you find it "entertaining" that's wondwerful.
I don't- I find it cowardly.
BHN
Forgot to add, have you considered how the set-up for
ridicule is established- easy to dismiss a bully, just like
we at DU dismiss the network bullies.
See the writing on the wall yet?

You have obviously studied the manual for
ridiculing and dismissing anyone you don't agree with-
WHERE have I seen that before?
Oh, that's right, it was at the school of O'really talk show hosting.

Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 01:49 AM by mouse7
You have decided that the "forensics club" method of communications is the only legitimate method of discourse from your elitist alter.

Those of us that think Democrats have gotten our head handed to us for the last 20 years by Republican street-fighters is because of such whimpy behavior have never demanded that NPR be shut down and force everyone out into the streets to fight. I respect that you have the right to take function in a manner that I feel is completely ineffective.

You do not respect our right to listen to something other than what you want to listen to. You want to keep getting your ass handed to you in pointless speech societies on NPR, that's your right, but get off the threads with your elitist, anti-populist tripe. If you don't want to listen to Randi Rhodes, don't. Just keep your pronouncements about it to yourself.

41. In other words, you are saying
that anyone who does not agree with you
and dares to say so, is an elitist.
What happened to discussion and debate.
All you have done is hurl insults at me for
having a different point of view.
You have expressed no thoughtful reasons
for disagreeing with me.
Care to try that approach?
Not holding my breath-
As you seem incapable of expressing yourself
though any manner other than short quips
intended to invalidate me.
Maybe you should co-host a show with Randi?

But sure, your anchor will be just fine, attached to nothing . . . where no one can see it.

Good for you! And they do good. But in terms of enacting progressive change, angry folks on the radio who speak about liberalism in commonsense terms are the arsenal of progressive change.

Chiding them for not being genteel enough for the Gentle BeHereNow is about as stupid as possible. It's placing one's own tender sensibilities above the needs of the moment.

You know, Randi is going to increase the chance that Republicans lose. Therefore Randi will decrease the chance that kids will die and that the elderly will shiver. That's more than can be said for 95% of the tender, soft-handed liberal scribes we have on our side.

But that doesn't matter... our perfection must triumph... We must speak softly, using subordinate clauses... must not offend DUers...

10. Majority Report...
Definitely. It was super. Dave Chapelle made a great guest today. And he's coming through here in a few weeks to do a show on campus. I can't wait!!

Second favorite...probably O'Franken Factor. Al Franken is da bomb. He had a pretty good show for not being used to radio format. His co-host there had to keep him in check a few times. It was a little funny.

While Randi Rhodes was okay, I agree that she was a little harsh on Nader. While I do not support Nader in his Presidential bid, I think he has had some remarkable accomplishments in the past forty or however many years it has been in achieving better government accountability and consumer protection. So I cringed a little, it seemed like Randi was just attacking him relentlessly, and not letting him get a word in edge wise.

20. I love Franken
But I'll be honest...thus far I have heard nothing that makes me see him as a radio host. When you can see the animation in his face as he speaks - it is funny. As is, the face cannot be seen, and the show is lacking.

His co host did a great job of covering for him, but he needs some studio time with a profesional to figure out how to deal w/radio. I have loved Franken since my first SNL show in the mid-70's, but we must be realistic!!

For the FIRST DAY ON THE AIR.........AIR AMERICA ROCKS!!!!

22. I got the most enjoyment out of "The Majority Report." However...
...I was able to listen to Garofalo and Seder on the computer and give them my full attention.

As for Franken and Rhodes, I had them tuned in on my delivery vehicle's radio, which kept losing the signal depending on where I had to drive. Plus, I was in and out of the car all day, which caused me to miss sizable chunks of their shows. For instance, I didn't catch a second of Randi's blowout with Nader, and only heard about it here!

Had I been able to hear Franken and Rhodes under more agreeable conditions, I might give the nod to either of them. As it stands now, though, I'll go with "The Majority Report," particularly since Bill Maher and Dave Chappelle were such excellent guests!
