<snip>Contrary to most reports, the Sunni town of Fallujah has never been a stronghold of Saddam Hussein despite the fact that his iron-fisted regime relied mainly on a close circle of Sunni followers.

The town was deprived under the ousted regime.

Fallujah and the rest of Al-Anbar province are ruled by Sunni conservative tribes who have traditionally resisted submission to foreign occupiers or government forces seeking to control the area by force.

Under Saddam, imams across the town refused to abide by his orders to praise him personally during daily prayers.

1. this is correct
In fact most of the resistance, especially now, is anti-Saddam.

6. they say the same of Ramadi & Balad
which were treated badly under Saddam's rule. From what I gather, the only places where the resistance is really "pro-Saddam" would be in the Tikrit region (not so much lately), a fraction of the Baghdad activities, and a section of the Arab areas of Mosul.

The resistance is primarily Islamic (in al-Fallujah especially so), pan-Arab nationalists, dissident Communists and labor militants, and the left-wing (anti-Saddam) of the Baathist movement--the four groups persecuted most under the previous system. Many of the "Saddam Loyalists" have mostly sold themselves out to serve the occupation forces-their expertise in fighting the groups giving the occupyers trouble is a mutually beneficial situation.

4. Damnit!!! Stop messing up the CNN mantra with Facts!!!
I was all understanding that this mercenary barbque was due to Saddam's loyalists pissed off that they were no longer in control and would have to cede power to the majority Shiia.

Now you have gone and popped my "understanding" of why this happened and why we have to "stay the course".

Shame on you.

;-)

5. This is bad news. If Saddam could not control these people...
...how does George plan on doing it? George said Saddam tortured, used mass graves, had rape rooms, and gassed his own people. Oh, I see how George is going to do it now.
