It's beginning to look like it's cool to be Liberal again.
Not that I consider myself Liberal, but, I never declared myself Republican, unlike some old high school buddies of mine. I know them well enough to know that when Liberalism comes back into vogue, they're going to try to sneak back into the ranks and try to hide that dark period of their lives when they called themselves Republican. But, boy, I'm not going to make it easy for them. I'll be sure to skewer them good to make sure they don't do it easily again.

Just curious...

then they called me years later to ask me to clarify if I was an Independent or a No Party affiliate. I'm the latter.

...party affiliation, just roughly describes an ideology. You can be an independent and a liberal at the same time, can't you?

IMO, people who swing sides based on what's cool are part of the reason we're in this mess, because they lend credibility to a candidate who might otherwise have questionable credibility.

Think Dennis Miller.

Again, not trying to insult your friends, just making a point. ;-)

14. I think a lot of people who call themselves Republicans........
only do so because they've fallen for the Republican image machine, and the Republican Marketing Department has worked overtime for the last few years to make it seem cool and hip to be one.

I know a few people who are "Republicans", though they have no idea what it means to be an actual Republican; they just like to be part of the crowd....I think they are just cowards who need to be following others and either don't think for themselves or are afraid to.

21. Yes, they are cowards.
One in particular stands out in my mind. His family was very intricated into that upper-class lifestyle we now call cronyism. I remember how he and his brothers belittled it with high-brow humor. But, I know they became a part of it when they became older because they knew that was the way to succeed in business. Be one of the upper crust and your clientele is certain.

CBS had a short piece last night about how Liberal has become a dirty word. It wasn't overwhelmingly good, but I was astonished to see anything on the subject at all. I think Liberalism is making a comeback.

I'm a bleeding-heart liberal and proud of it.

They had a piece on Air America, about 30 seconds, then had a "story" with the lead in that they didn't use the word liberal in their title because it would be the kiss of death for them. Then they spent the next few minutes showing repugs liberal bashing.

on the subject of liberal.
"I looked up the definition of 'liberal' in a Random House dictionary. It gave the synonyms for 'liberal' as 'progressive,' 'broad-minded,' 'unprejudiced,' 'beneficent.' The antonyms it offered: 'reactionary' and 'intolerant."

34. Quite Right!
And Conservative = "Motivated by fear, greed, selfishness, laziness, insecurity; forgiving of their own faults, and quick to condemn similar faults in others; hypocritical"

(My own definition)

How did it ever become popular to be a conservative?

There is someone in the office where I work that we all severly dislike. He is manipulative, a liar, and motivated by a desire to have more for himself... and yet he thinks that what he gets should be handed to him on a platter. He would be the last person to offer a helping hand to someone who needs it.

Half the people in my office are conservatives... And the traits they like the least about the above-mentioned slime ball are traits that all conservatives have, to an extent. These are traits that they themselves also have, to an extent.

48. Love Me, I'm a Liberal
I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every coloured boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I'm glad the commies were thrown out
of the AFL-CIO board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
as long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I read New Republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the Democratic Party.
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

============================

Or, there's always Jellos version

I cried when they shot John Lennon
Tears ran down my spine
And I cried when I saw "JFK"
As though I'd lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X and Ice-T had it coming
They got what they asked for this time

CHORUS
So love me, love me, love me
I'm a liberal

I go to pro-choice rallies
Recycle my cans and jars
I'll honk if you love the Dead
Hope those funny grunge bands become stars
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far

CHORUS

I cheered when Clinton was chosen
My faith in the system reborn
I'll do anything to save our schools
If my taxes ain't too much more
And I love blacks and gays and Latinos
As long as they don't move next door

CHORUS

Rush Limbaugh and the L.A.P.D.
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand where they're at
Arsenio should set them straight
But if Neigborhood Watch doesn't know you
I hope the cops take your name

CHORUS

Yeh, I read the New Republic(an)
Rolling Stone and Mother Jones too
If I vote it's a Democrat
With a sensible economy view
But when it comes to terrorist Arabs
There's no one more red, white and blue

CHORUS

Once I was young and had an attitude
Stickers covered the car I drove in
Even went on some direct actions
When there weren't rent-a-cops to be seen
Ah, but now I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
