Poll question: What should we call the War against Terrorists? |
|
After reading Clarke's book, I feel I am at odds with some of the sentiment here. I just don't agree with a the "bring 'em home now" attitude, even in light of the events of yesterday and the fact that going into Iraq was a major blunder.
Frankly, I feel we are engaged in a conflict with a people that truly represent a danger to humanity. I also feel squeezed between that group (the terrorists and their enablers) and the bad leadership and ill-advised imperialism of the Bush Administration/PNAC. We, the lefties, radicals, moderate dems, and what-not need to have a cohesive and defensible stance on the issue.
Pure pacifism doesn't cut it in my opinion. It's a political non-starter for one thing and a recipe for further agression just as much as blatant imperialism (which the Iraq war is). So I think we need to either agree that this is a War on Terrorism or that it is something else. If it's something else, what should it be called? I'd like to post a poll of follow up terms if folks can help give definitions. Perhaps, by plurality we can come up with a better defining term.
** P.S.: Yes, I realize going in to Iraq was a bad idea...a very bad idea. That doesn't mean "getting out NOW!" is the best solution to resolve the problems created by a bad decision. For those who dismiss this out of hand consider this illustration: If a surgeon performs a surgery that is perhaps not the best decision who then nicks the aorta while he is in there, that surgeon can't fix their mistake just by closing the wound and ignoring the bleeding he created. He needs to take his time, repair the aorta, close the wound properly, and then apologize to the patient/family and offering support during follow up.

2. We need to get away from declaring "wars" on all our problems |
|
Call it "Spread freedom and democracy mission" - I don't care, just don't call everything a war.

6. Come on now, the War on Drugs has been such a success! |
|
Yes, I'm joking.
And I wish they'd stop calling officials "Czars". It's damned undemocratic & the czars were not successful in the end.

8. Not as Big a Success as the War on Poverty |
|
Oh, wait... now I get it. It wasn't a war against POVERTY, it was a war against people IN poverty. Well, in that case, it's going swimmingly.

I've also been wondering when we will begin to refer to The first Gulf War and the present mess as; The Bush - Hussein Wars.

discuss the situation plublically...we need a pannel of world experts to spend a couple weeks at least on this. a couple times a year.
I was in the PeaceCorps in an Islamic republic in 1973... they hated us then because of Israels treatment of the Palestinenians

Actually, the War on Terror is just one part of a much larger strategy where you do whatever you want to do and then lie about it continuously and unashamedly.

17. I think people missed the point. Either that or they think Al Qaeda |
|
are just victims of Bush aggression.
Seriously, is that the paradigm of the left? Bush is Bad, Al qaeda opposes Bush, therefore al Qaeda has no culpability?
Seriously, don't people realize that Clinton actually raised this as the important issue it is. Bush ignored it.
Terrorism is not Bush's fault, the exacerbation of it is but he didn't start it.
Doesn't anyone get this?
