So does Randi ever shut the F*ck-up and listen?
Holy freaking balls! I understand this is a new network, but this woman needs to let callers talk rather than just talk over them.

Also, it would be nice if she talked about issues rather than herself. I missed the whole Nader things, so maybe I would feel differently if I had. But now, it seems like all she wants to talk about is herself, and the issues only come up when they relate to her.

Seriously, you want to talk about how you kill Rush on the air all the time, and then you can't even operate the phones.

Hope it gets better soon.

2. not really
I like her attitude, but my one complaint with her is that she doesn't really talk in sentences, with breaths in between - she just yammers for minutes on end. Take a breath, listen to the callers,

7. Speak for yourself.
No doubt the biggest contribution to the show is the host, but it can also be the biggest detriment.

I tuned into AA to hear the common liberal across the US. And with hear, it is beginning to sound as if I am wasting my time.

16. Hang in there and try a Pacifica link during Rhodes-
I have truly enjoyed what I have heard today on AA.
My husband asked if Randi was Ann Coulter when he
walked in the room during her Nadar interview.
I nearly died laughing- He was serious, he did not know
about AA radio.
"Who is that woman?" He asked, "Is that Ann Coulter? Turn that off!"
Fortunately, we live in L.A. and have a Pacifica station I can
switch to during Randi the Ranter.
I am wondering if she is actually Bill O'Really in drag...hmmm?"
I find her approach to be extremely crass. She is bully and I
detest bullies.
Try one of these during Randi:

I just saw you post on another thread about us attacking

would do ourselves in...and yet you just told someone
not to let the door hit them in the ass?
Not to be an elitist or anything, but would you mind

I don't see any consideration for the fact people like me have been waiting for liberal talk radio for more than a decade, and on Day 2 of finally getting it, people like this are screaming profanity at a liberal because the liberal chews gum and talks over the comments of guest. The anger is astoundingly over the top and completely out of proportion. There's no "crime" here in talking over a caller or guest. It's a broadcasting technique. It isn't criminal wrongdoing.

If you don't like some aspect of a broadcast, write it up in review form with laguage appropriate for what one feels the errors are. You're such a proponent of NPR, BHN. Do you hear NPR broacasters using rhetoric approaching, "shut the fuck up, brownshirts, etc?

Not only no, but fuck no.

36. WHEN did I say I was a proponent of NPR?
WHAT ARE you smokin' mouse?!?
I NEVER once suggested anyone listen to NPR!
I would not wish NPR on my WORST enemy.
For the record- I happen to like 90% of what I have heard
on AA. Intelligent and alternative information
and discussion among informed and reasonable people.
I don't like the similarities of Randi to her right-wing
counterparts.
I find shouting and bullying people equally unattractive
in both liberals and conservatives.
I am consistent in my standards, that is all.
Unattractive behavior is unattractive behavior
no matter who is exhibiting it.
We are allowed to have different standards, are we not?
You like Randi? Good, I am happy that she makes you
happy. I find her crass. The beauty is, you can listen and
I can switch the channel to Pacifica, which you might
enjoy too. By the way, Pacifica is NOT NPR. Not at all.
It is alternative, non corporate media.
Completely listener supported and therefore unbeholden
to any corporate interference.
Ever heard DemocracyNow?

58. Perhaps if you feel that I am "talking down" to you
it is because you are insecure?
I am not talking down to you.
I am trying to be gracious and meet you on
some level of human decency.
You keep putting words and attitudes in my
mouth and mind that simply are not true.
Again, I have NEVER endorsed NPR.
And you are wrong about Pacifica,
in Los Angeles it is responsible for bringing
people of like mind together in enormous numbers
who actually DO effect change in our community.
In short, I find your defensiveness to be indicative
of a great insecurity on your part. I am sorry if I
have triggered that in you. It was never my intention.
For now, I think we should agree to disagree since
I don't seem to be able to find a ground for discussion

to lash out at me.

73. I'm with mouse7 (sort of).

Not the insults, but the reason for the insults.

A couple Sundays ago I was watching a gay activist debating whatever you call the guys who oppose gay marriage. Then it suddenly occured to me. Here I am listening to the opponents logical, reasoned arguments as if his words actually mean something. But I know that in reality he isn't really saying what he thinks. Instead he is coming up with a reasoned argument to support his unreasonable position. I know that he is really there because he hates fags and queers. He knows that is why he is really there. The gay activist knows this. The moderator knows this. But nobody is saying it.

Air America is saying it. This, I thought, was supposed to be the point of Air America. The whole point of Air America is to present the progressive view in a rabble rousing fashion that appeals to the masses. If you want staid, intellectual and polite discussions of the issues ... switch channels. If you want the unvarnished truth, listen to Randi.

By the way, I know what to call "the guys who oppose gay marriage". It's "bigot". But that show was the kind of show you like where they don't make impolite accusations of that kind.

117. I totally agree with you Mouse...
I'm so over the whimpering simpering, meek shall inherit the earth, I need to derive profundity from the fucking cracks on the walls liberals. As far as I see it that mind set is what has put us where we are right now. If Al Gore had sent someone besides sweet little Warren Christopher to face James Baker we might just not be in this nightmare. I do not take any particular joy being confrontational or calling bullshit for what it is but the other side took their gloves off a long time ago and until liberals get it through their skulls that we gotta start being tough and taking no prisoners we are going to continue to be fodder for the right.
That rant being ranted Randi is great. She is a typical Brooklyn gal and she handled Ralphie perfectly. He called wanting his never ending ego to be stroked and enabled yet again and she let him know what most rational liberals are thinking. The shoe alegory was great. It was complimentary but perfectly illustrative of what Nader is right now. If the lady who posted above husband can't tell the difference between Ann Coulter and Randi I'd suggest sit and listen for awhile rather then making snap judgements.
And once again, if you don't like it don't fuckin listen! Now flame away at will!

8. Not NPR
This is her style—brash, New York, in your face radio. This type of radio format lives on confrontation. This is what Rush, Savage and Hannity understand. It is refreshing to hear someone on the left dish it out to a national audience. We get Bernie Ward and Ray Taliafero in the Bay Area so we are used to this kind of Blitzkrieg Talk on the left. Both of those guys have been on for years so it does catch and hold an audience.

This is not NPR. If you don't like it, don't listen.

I alternate listening to Bernie Ward and Mike Webb nightly. I'd listen to Ray Taliaferro as well, but most of the time, I'm asleep. I've also been listening to Randi Rhodes' streaming from Florida for almost a year.

I am thrilled to hear Randi on AA. She makes her points with facts and doesn't back down, especially when she confronted a man that the rest of the Democrats are too damn scared to confront. You bet the conservatives will tune in. Hopefully, they'll learn something. She also is the breakout star of Air America.

Let's hope that she'll bring Mike Malloy to the fold sooner than later. I'd also relinquish our area's wonderful Mike Webb to them; our loss is the country's gain.

Record is a short form of recording. Since a CD was still a recorded work of the artist, everything is a record. Also, they're all albums, no matter the format.

The correct name of the media that you snarkily corrected the other poster over was LP.

Yes, they're CD in format. But, they're still a record.

You just nailed it.
There was no difference in an interview with Rush or Randi.
The shouting, "I'm mad at you" approach could have
just as easily been Rush.
It is the technique that people are disappointed with.
It is too familiar, we have seen it far too long
on the other side of the market, and many
people find it juvenile and unthinking.
If you are armed with truth, there is no need to bully.
THAT is what the O'reallys of the world resort to.

55. "There was no difference"
Oy vey!

"There's no difference" between a liberal and a conservative

It is the technique that people are disappointed with.

More BS. It's a technique FEW people are disappointed with. The ratings make it clear, EXCEEDINGLY CLEAR, that most people are NOT disappointed when the host talks over a guest. Howard Stern, O'Reilly, Crossfire, etc ALL do it and all are successful.

We don't have to attract the liberals that listen to Democracy Now or NPR. They're not voting for Bush*!! We need Independents and Repukes. They don't listen to NPR

126. Do You Wanna Know Why Rush Is So Successful?
Because the word "nuance" and "fair exchange" are foreign words to him. No matter how wrong he is, he thinks he's right and no "fair exchange" in the world will convince him otherwise.

He and the rest of his clones know they are presenting a product to the people, and people are not going to buy a Nissan if the ad says "well some people say the vehicle is reliable. . ."

NO, the ad makes their conviction known that the Nissan is the best car out there and you should go buy it. Period, end of sentence.

Randi is popular in the Palm Beach area because she knows she's right, flays any and every one who think's she's wrong AND, most important, she has the facts to back it up.

The interview she did with Ralph Nader is textbook Randi and should be the format of all liberal radio personalities. She could have wasted time agreeing with Ralph Nader that third party politics had their merits OR she could do what she does best and call him out on his bullshit about how there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties. "Who would you caucus with? If you won't caucus with anyone, what kind of effect are you going to have if you are elected?" that is the type of thing that needs to get out there.

I'm sick and fuggin tired of liberals being typecasted as indecisive, compromising and desultory all the time. At the minimum we need to be repeating this over the airwaves: WE ARE RIGHT. THEY ARE WRONG. And this country would be in a way better shape if we controlled things.

The goal here is to attract votes from people who might vote Dem. We need all sort of views, not five different voices expressing the same views and tone. Let a thousand flowers bloom...then we'll see which ones work

she wasn't interviewing him. She wanted to confront him. And like her style or not, that's what she did. Look how people are talking about her today. A few posts about AA in general but face it, Randi struck a chord, good or bad. Stations don't care WHY you listen, just that you DO listen. Randi knows this.

I've been listening to her for most of the show today. She just finished up a very thoughtful interview with Kevin Phillips, the author of "American Dynasty".

Is she "ignorant and disrespectful" because she's a woman who dares to speak her opinion?

>Howard Stern Is A New Yorker, He Can Be Shrill, But He's A Helluva Lot Easier To Listen To. ( I Realize He Doesn't Do A Political Show ). It's Simple Radio Etiquette, You Can Act Like Hannity Or Limbaugh And Make The Left Look Rabid And Rant-filled Like The Right.<

In the 10 minutes I listened today, she started going off about electronic voting based on someone advocating IRV. She seemed to have no clue what it was and stated that computerized voting cant handle IRV. Even Diebold built their machines to be able to do IRV elections... IRV has nothing to do with whether or not its an electronic machine. She really does need to shut the fuck up and listen to what the callers are saying.

144. I'd never heard of her until yesterday.
But, apparently she has a large following. That's fine.

If Air America has any chance at all to gain ground on the right wing ideologues, we're going to have to find spokespeople who can cut through the hyperbole and nail the opponents to the wall. Last week I saw Gore Vidal on a talk TV show and he absolutely reduced the Republican shill to a pool of blubber by using intellect and humor.
Just shouting back at an opponent wins no arguments IMO.

At issue here is not whether we may or may not "like" Randi. The point is we've got to do everything we can to get Bush out of office.

what she was saying was that the voting machines that were being used in those states WERE NOT CAPABLE OF INSTANT RUNOFF VOTING.

duh!

she knows exactly what IRV is, but if the machines, nor the programing, are capable, the arguement is moot.

right now we do not have time to insist on IRV. it ain't gonna, and can't, happen.

40. Just got off the phone with Randi
I'm the guy who said that bombing Iraqi fetuses is "murder in self-defense."

From my experience, after being on the phone with several local and national talk radio types, you just have to remember that although Randi, Al, etc. take calls, (1) Callers are guests, not hosts - and you have to make enough room for others to participate. (2) Make your points quick, concise, and as intelligent as possible. Humor usually doesn't hurt, either.

Randi's very outspoken - but her darts actually stick in the corkboard while Hannity's bounce off and threaten nearby bar patrons. I don't know if I'd call Randi a blowhard, but from my view here in the talk-radio wasteland of Dallas, she is a tall drink of cool spring water.

Nobody gives a fuck that she's a woman. At least I sure as hell don't.

What the detractors (again, at least this is my perspective) give a fuck about is that she's a liberal Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh still wouldn't be a useful human being if he were a liberal. (That's kind of a garbled sentence, but you get the idea.)

In other words, saying stuff like "HOW DARE A WOMAN BE ASSERTIVE" and pretending that's the issue is just lame.

Seriously, do you expect to like the style of every Democrat in America? That's kind of elitist don't you think? There are plenty of Dems I don't care for but I don't feel the need to go on the internet and trash them. That would just be petty.

By the way in a few weeks, once that "new car smell" has worn off, have a look at her ratings. You'll see that there are plenty who like to listen to "that shit" as you call it. People will be listening, liking, and voting Democratic. That is a good thing. That is what helps win elections. Meanwhile I encourage you to listen to whatever floats your battleship. I will be.

Better to "whine" about a strong-minded Democrat rallying the troops, I guess. He's one who'd rather curse the darkness than light a candle. The Democratic party is a self-serve party. Nobody is going to hand him things on a silver platter.

That interview must been tough for you to listen to.

Speaking of your favorite word, whine, I agree, that's exactly what Ralphie was doing during the interview. Randi was giving him the hell he richly deserved.

95. No offense but this is a New York thing
In New York people are cutting each other off all the time. Now you'll notice she has no problem when someone does this to her. That's just they way New Yorkers talk.

You get used to it after a while.

130. No it's not a NY thing
We have some of the best conversations in the world in our neck of the woods. NYers are VERY smart. Please don't confuse us with people from Long Island or New Jersey.

I have not listened yet but reading these threads is starting to make me not want to.

131. Sure it's New York - it's the opinionated
cab driver. It's the Italian brothers in the deli down the street. It's the union boss. It's people who know what they think and aren't afraid to say it. It's impatience and it's passion. Those things aren't NY?

136. I thinks she's revved up because she can't smoke between breaks!!
I'm serious! She sounds very wound up...nerves maybe, but I bet it's the smoking. She's been saying that she can't smoke in the building and can't get to the street between breaks (bad elevators) and that she's chewing Nicorette! I heard her while she was still in Florida talking about the NYC no smoking rules.

I truly think this is part of her revved up style. That and also the new pace she's living at compared to when she was in FL.....

142. i heard her for the first time today
and when the nadar thing was going on, and she just jumped all over him (loudly) every time he tried to speak, i thought, "sheesh! she's just like a wingnut! she won't even let him speak!"

then randi said, "this isn't an interview! i am so angry at you!!!"

after that, i was cool with randi, and very much enjoyed the rest of her show.

here is a funny thing: bring up nader on DU, and you will have the most flame-ridden, most volatile, most abrasive rhetoric you can see on DU - and mostly it's people condemning nader for all that ... well, for all that randi was yelling about! - she was most assuredly not "whining!" she was yelling at ralph nader - possibly more gently than i've seen DUer's make noise about ol' ralph.

most democrat DUers would love to yell at nader. so this thread dissing randi really has me scratching my head.

I listened to her first and second days, and good lord, she never shuts up, even when the caller agrees with her! She was immensely rude to Ralph Nader, and frankly I'm amazed it took him as long as he did for him to hang up.

150. Stick with her
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 11:36 AM by rpalochko
I have been listening to her for about a year and I would say that the first two shows she has done for Air America are the worst I have heard her do. For whatever reason she is more keyed-up than usual, I'm sure things will return to normal. But she has to snapping that gum on the air, it is annoying and disgusting.

As far as the Nader thing goes, she did not put him on to interview him. Her intention was only to scold him.

152. thank you. i agree.
she was giving a piece of her mind, not some fireside chat. it's something a huge group of democrats were *dying* to do. and she did it. she nailed him asking what does he think he'll accomplish. and he just went back to his routine. enough routine, deal with reality. she's right, he's a luxury candidate - tough to take, but he is. and this time the stakes are so high that we can't afford it, as she said.

who here is willing to take up nader's argument that there is no difference between dems and repubs, especially after this administration. were you ever this pissed during clinton? i wasn't. many dems weren't. and that's what she's calling nader out on. his schtick is old and tired and incorrect and god help us if it costs us another 4 years of bush. if you disagree with that, fine, free speech. but that doesn't mean this view, shared by many other dems, is 'so beneath the liberal cause as to be unspeakable.'

for a group that promotes diversity it's strange how there's a strict castigation of any that has any fiery passion about their beliefs. if you find it's not soft enough, balanced enough, well there's other radio stations. but remember: equal time is no longer required by the FCC, thus the take over of the right-wing media. we gave an inch and they took a mile. obviously the "fireside chats" don't work in mass media america. gotta spice it up with diversity, and randi is this diversity we need.

153. she could have learned something about runoff voting
A caller wanted to talk about instant runoff voting, a very worthy topic for a liberal radio show. Randi clearly didn't know what instant runoff voting was, but instead of admitting her ignorance, and asking the caller to explain, she guessed wrongly that it was about black box voting machines.

Too bad, this was a missed opportunity to inform herself and her listeners about an important topic. Oh, well.
