Shrub has 51% approval in latest Gallup - WTF?
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 09:50 AM by Skinner
Majority of Americans Continue to Believe Iraq "Worth It"
Bush job approval on handling Iraq now at 51%

by Frank Newport

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- A majority of Americans continue to support U.S. military involvement in Iraq, and a slight majority now say they approve of the way President George W. Bush is handling the situation there. Views of the Iraq situation are partisan, with almost 9 in 10 Republicans supporting the war, while two-thirds of Democrats oppose it. Other segments of the American population who give more than average support to the U.S. involvement in Iraq include conservatives, men, and whites. Half of Americans believe that the Iraq situation is an extension of the general war against terrorism, while half do not.

Is U.S. Involvement in Iraq Worth It?

Fifty-six percent of Americans say that the situation in Iraq was worth going to war over, little changed from the 55% who felt that way in early March. Both March readings on this key measure of support for the U.S. military presence in Iraq are higher than the 49% recorded in late January/early February. The previous low point of support for the action in Iraq -- 50% -- occurred in September of last year.

Worth Going to War in Iraq?

The trend on the Gallup "was it worth it" measure tells a great deal about the American public's perceptions of the controversial U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Support for the idea of such action was at only 53% in January 2003, but quickly jumped as high as 76% "worth it" in April as the intervention continued and appeared successful.

By early fall 2003, support levels had fallen to the aforementioned 50%, shortly after Bush addressed the nation about difficulties in Iraq and announced he would seek an additional $87 billion from Congress for the effort. Support began to climb slightly in the fall, and jumped to 65% in mid-December, after the widely publicized capture of Saddam Hussein.

1. Sorry this is so long
I am new to the board and not sure if I was supposed to do that. I didn't want to exclude any info.

I truly beleive people in this country are smoking crack on a daily basis now. Didn't anyone watch the 9/11 hearings? Why is he still up at 51%? I give up.

13. "That's his approval on "Handling Iraq""
Not good numbers for him, but not good for us either.
Every time Bush's numbers drop, he starts another fight.
Fear is his ultimate weapon, because people can be beaten down by fear to the extent they will put up with almost anything just to feel secure. Don't fool yourself. Neocons are playing us like a drum through our fears and insecurities.

20. Who's playing whom "like a drum?"
I don't think I know what you're talking about. Bush has the most to fear and the most to lose. Neocons are NOT "playing us."

No really, I don't get it either. Half the people are just too retarded to see how they're being hosed by this guy. That, and he says "Jesus" and they swoon.

25. Dems have got to stop whining if they are going to win
Notice how the Dems are sinking through the hearings. They are looking like spoiled brats. How about some REAL ideas and plans. We've got to get off the negative train (& fast).

Remember when Clinton ran the second term? Repubs put up a s-e-n-a-t-o-r (they are unelectable) and they ran a "We hate Clinton" campaign. Let us learn from it.

6. Not in my area for sure!
I just wish they would call me in this poll! It all depends on where the polled stand on issues. Just my luck they might have called 1,000 people and 680 of them are conservative Republicans... A poll is just a sampling! There is lots of time for Bush to show his true colors before Nov. He is in hot water already and the heat is on!!! There is work to do by spreading the truth about the Bush administration!

3. I think the Bush empire will have to burn itself out
I am unsure of what their eventual goal is, but it's pretty clear that they have taken over the media (in this country), are now shutting down web sites they don't like (whitehouse.org), and have convinced a lot of people on whom they woulnd't piss if they were on fire to vote for them.

I think that despite our best efforts, Smirk will be "re"-elected in November, and will likely have a Repug congress to help him along next year too.

Let's face it, with the amount of incompetence and corruption they've exhibited, his poll numbers should be around 10%. Yet, 50% or so will still vote for him. That is how sorry a state our nation is in.

On the upside, their corruption and incompetence will lead to a fairly quick disintegration, IMO. They successfully pulled off the putsch, LIHOP, told one lie after another for 3 years, committed treason to try to intimidate a truthspeaker, sent 1000 or so Americans and 20,000 or so Iraqis to their deaths (including women and children) under false pretenses, set up a pipeline through which Cheney's company is funnelled 1,000,000,000 tax dollars per week, refused to answer questions about all of their crimes, shredded the best parts of the constitution, basically told everyone not making $250,000 per year that they don't deserve to live, and now are using the treasury department as a campaign staff. It may see them trhough the next election, but it's no way to run a country, and I don't think they will be able to stop themselves short of a disaster. Within a decade or so there will be either a revolt from within the country, or they will provoke a war in which the UN decides that we are not worth the trouble any more, and takes sides against us.

Neither will be pretty, but the way that they control the media, money, electoral map, and voting machines makes an electoral or non-violent reversal a long shot, and, to put it succinctly, the pepole will not put up with this for very long.

16. I think the Bush empire will have to burn itself out"
I wish that were true. Their pattern so far is to rig the system so they never need to run for office again. The presidency was just a stepping stone for Bush. He's bucking to be our First Fuhrer!

22. I think you are right,
the only thing I disagree with is that if honest elections were held ,republicans would lose. I don't think they have 50% of the vote, though they are closer to that figure than they should be.

23. That's my point
"if honest elections were held ,republicans would lose"

Probably, but the fact that it will be close enough for them to steal again is strong evidence that there is a sickness in the country that's probably not curable with routine medicine like elections.

Just look at this one fact: The 60,000 or so African Americans who had there voting privledges (?) revoked illegally in 2000 still have not had them reinstated. Ask yourself honestly, can a republic with such a huge basic flaw survive for long? I think not.

The thing that will eventually reverse our course is that Bush's world-wide approval rating is around 10%, and with the rate at which the drunken moron spends the treasury AND good will, we will very quickly become weak and despised, our government will execute coups in one too many countries, and we will become Germany of 1941.

as a 1978 Soviet Agriculture Report.

They are setting us up for the theft.

boggle the mind. I am having a very hard time believing they're not rigged. The guy is already a lame duck as far as I'm concerned.
