19. Yep - and more and more are realizing
that what people are finding are part-time jobs, or jobs that don't pay as high a salary as they had before.

Many on this board may write off republicans as a bunch of mindless zombies who don't think at all for themselves. I got news for ya... that only describes the bush party loyalists. Even here in texas (his 'home state' *barf*), you can hardly find ANY bush/cheney stickers.

Don't buy the propoganda!

Unemployment pertencages went up because some of the people that had stopped looking for a job returned to the search. There was still a net increase in jobs. Even manufacturing jobs increased. Everything is still way behind where it sould be though...

34. Just a Stupid Talking Point
What they don't realize is that if what they're saying is true, then UE is actually MUCH MUCH WORSE than we're being lead to believe. The poster is right in that there are lot's of people who are no longer counted in UE because they've given up. Whether the uptick in UE is because they've all of a sudden become confident they'll find a job and started looking again, well, I've seen no evidence or indication of that anywhere...

The truth is that for those bush party loyalists out there, NOTHING will diminish their support.

For swing voters and sane republicans, this is readily indentifiable as grade-A Soviet spin, and the preponderance of it in the Pravda-like media is becoming more transparent every day.

14. Most people will look around them
and see that there are no new jobs in their community. They will listen to the news about the 9-11 Commission, and realize this president is a pathological liar. They will read about how many young Americans are dying in Iraq, and know that the president has no conscience. They will put gas in their car, and they will recognize that he is hurting them financially. And when they go in to the convenience store to pay for the gas, and see a "help needed" sign, they aren't going to think, "Hot dang, that old George W. sure is putting this town to work!"

23. 70,000 of the alleged 308,000-job gain comes from settlement ...
... of a grocery workers' strike in California.

Of course, Dubya's propaganda machine won't publicize this fact until they need an explanation for next month's PLUNGE.

From http://www.forbes.com/reuters/newswire/2004/02/27/rtr1278463.html

"Mediator says deal reached in Calif. grocery strike Reuters, 02.27.04, 1:24 AM ET

NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) -Three major supermarket chains and the union representing some 60,000 striking workers have reached a tentative settlement, the mediator in the 5-month-old California grocery strike confirmed on Friday.

The deal ... affects 10,000 supermarket employees in addition to the 60,000 striking workers...."

42. It's good news for the country and therefore good news for us.
However, there is still a lot of weakness in the numbers due to two facts; they include the 72,000 grocery workers in CA returning to work after their strike and many of the jobs created appear to be part-time work. CNBC was reporting this morning that there are still some 4.4 million workers who are part-time needing full-time employment. That's a staggering number.

However, 308,000 is definitely welcome news since there has been such neglect on the jobs situation in this country. I'm happy to see anything that helps people feed themselves; it says much that the standards have become so low.

59. But the economy is still very unhealthy, overall
Interest rates will have to rise due to job creation, and that will in turn cause sluggishness in many sectors of the economy. The overly-low interest rates have been the only thing keeping the economy afloat thus far, and it's been a borrow and spend scenario that can only hold up temporarily.

Until something substantial is done to improve the economy, aside from the short-term fixes, average Americans will continue to live in a recession--whether Bushco wants to call it that or not.

41. During Clinton's 8 years
the average increase in jobs from February to March was 703,750. Using the seasonally adjusted figures, this is a decrease in employment.

You can query the historical figures here.

46. no, it won't
it will give him a momentary bump among those who already support him and who are agonizingly desperate to hear a tidbit of positive news that might reflect well on their little tin soldier.

55. It's hard - - - - People only read or listen to the headlines
They can't think for themselves so they have the talking heads think for them. They are passive and indolent and most couldn't care less about politics. They don't look beyond 10 feet in front of them and 24 hours ahead of them. They don't know what mercury poisoning is or what a deficit means. They drive their Chevy Suburban and Ford Excursion burning up fossil fuel like there's no tomorrow. They don't recycle they don't read. They watch "reality" TV and munch on Cheetos. Fox is their news source and the American flag is their symbol for blind patriotism - they stick in on their car but don't know what it really represents. They think might is right and lies is wise. They believe Saddam was involved with 9/11 and war is good for the economy.

A majority of the American people are not only ignorant they are stubborn and stupid and wishy-washy with no true conviction or ideology. How else do you explain a 90% approval rating for bu$h after 9/11. Give me a break - people don't know what to think unless they're told what to think. They don't read newspapers anymore - they are spoon fed dirt bag political commercials that are about as effective as a tablespoon of placebo. The dumbing down of America has been a long time coming and we can see it in every aspect of society. To think that those insipid commercials could have any affect at all is just horrifying!! But the sad fact is - they do. I remember asking a bu$h supporter why she was supporting bu$h. "Because of his strong leadership" she replied. So I asked her what was strong about it and she hemmed and hawed and she couldn't answer a simple question like that. She was told that bu$h was a strong leader and she let it be her truth even though she had no idea why she thought the way she did. I think we should all grab a video camera and go out on the street and interview every bu$h supporter and ask them why they support bu$h. After they give their pat answer call them on it and see how many actually KNOW why they are supporting this complete failure . . . .

"Say anything stupid and chimpy gets it!"

60. really good post, oddman
i agree with you. one of the most frustrating things about the ignorant is that they have no clue how little they know. and they don't appreciate it being pointed out to them.

61. it's only April!
There's another 7 months til the election! Who knows what the economy or the unemployment rate will be at then. Plus, Bush has lost millions of jobs in the U.S. One good month doesn't erase that. The trend itself is still very bad for Bush and very good for the Democrats. With Bush--more than any other President in recent memory--average, poor, and pathetic job performances seem to rate him more points than he's worth. I think it's because most people (even Repukes) expect so little of him that when he happens to accidentally say the right thing or have a job month like March, people just oooh and ahhh like they're cooing the ugly baby in the stroller that just happened to smile at them. What they don't get is that the smile was insincere. Either through stupid luck, or-even worse-through guile and sinister planning, the ugly baby has their attention. So, don't look at the ugly baby, even when it smiles at you!
