How embarassed should the media be over "pretty girl missing" coverage?
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 03:34 PM by underpants
LBN thread here

First let me say that I hope the best for her and we will probably see the time that they were going to use to cover the search with the "Why did she do it?" discussion....ad naseum.

CNN MSNBC and NBC were in full "waiting for the corpse", no matter what they want you to think, mode.

Aside from that I think that they may finally be forced to reassess which abduction and disappearance stories get coverage. The "pretty girl" (preferably blonde) gets the nod and if she is from a rich or sort of rich family that pushes it over the edge.

So what do you think?

1. They got suckered big time
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 03:36 PM by mtnester
ESPECIALLY CNN...idiots
Even my husband and myself felt there was just something not right with this one from the get go.

EDIT - if WE had that hunch, why didn't a single "real" journalist have any clue?

29. because the story is sexier and more interesting
if they advance the notion of a cute, missing girl than if they investigated the whole story and release the facts, without pimping fear into people.

of uselessness in the media.

5. If they are not embarrassed about covering for the bushler gang
they cannot be embarrassed.

Stories like this, Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson, Clinton's Penis etc are pushed to obscure the real crimes going on in the white house.

How come I can always figure out when these things don't add up and they can't? I kept saying the other day when they had that dog running around in circles looking for the bad guy that there was nothing to be found.

10. YOu know as I watched that I could he some hunters laughing
I don't know anything about scent dogs and I am willing to bet that the talking head on MSNBC doesn't either. I thought it seemed odd that the dog was running in circles and I started wondering if that is the normal sign of picking up a scent. Apparently not.

12. I'm sure the police knew at that point, too
but there is no way you come out and make a public accusation of that magnitude until you are certain.

Its a further credit to the cops that they managed to keep the media in the dark. Well, that's not that tough, perhaps.

30. look at how the story was promo'd by the media
fear, fear, fear, fear, fear...

every bite is with someone who is 'scared'...

fear gets more mileage than known facts. fear will get your attention.

most tv news use fear as a tactic to scare you into watching them.

There is not a promo that airs which fails to tell you that you're not safe, you're lacking in something, your children are lacking in something---it reinforces the idea that your salvation comes from the information only they can provide to you. Night after night, people sit in front of their tv's and allow themselves to be scared to death, and from that scared mindset is how they proceed in every decision of their life.

13. at first
they thought the "abductor" was in the marsh area where they found her, so they blocked off an area and were trying to catch the guy that didn't even exist in the first place. lol

15. If someone says there is an armed assailant running around a city...
It sort of behooves the police to take it seriously until they can be sure it's not true. I'd say it was probably a hell of a first day for Acting Police Chief Wray (our previous police chief, Williams, retired on Monday).

What I found interesting was the way the media coverage fed on itself. The local news didn't go 24/7 with the coverage until they realized they were being picked up nationally. Even at that point, however, they didn't do things like show the sniffer dogs for 45 minutes like CNN did.

It seems obvious that the cable stations were looking for a distraction Tuesday, and once they found one, the 'media event' was on.

18. First day on the job? Had to face the pack journalists?
I hadn't heard that it was his first day on the job or in that position.

I swear the networks have a caravan of trucks and personnel who sit around awaiting orders on the "story" they should all go cover.

25. First day as Acting Chief
He'd been Assistant Chief before that, since Chief Williams had given a few weeks/a months notice that he was retiring.

Actually, I thought it was kind of sad, but Chief Williams ended up sitting mostly alone at his retirement party Tuesday evening, since almost his whole department was out looking for Audrey's 'abductor'.

20. They should be very embararassed...
because it seems whenever a white woman comes up missing it's national news, but last year a black woman, who was pregnant, went missing in Savannah Ga, where she was going to graduate school. She was from California. I didn't hear one word about it on the national level, like this chick. Unfortunately the girl's body was found earlier this year in a totally different part of Georgia near a military base where her boyfriend is stationed.

I know this current chick wasn't the only woman or person for that matter to go missing in the same time frame, but for some reason, and I think it's because she's a white woman, it for some reason deserves national attention. Man, it makes me sick.

21. I'm glad she's alive, now let's move on please.
I really don't care the cirumstances under which she is safe and sound. She is safe and sound. Not many women come out of the woods alive after being reported missing like that. Now, she needs pros to help her through her issues so she can have a productive life.

That said... can we please move on?

Missing chicks seem to be a hot topic right now. Maybe this will finally make the media realize that alot of people are tired of hearing about all the white girls missing.

But that would require something resembling a conscience, which we all know they don't have.

Ugly minority children? SO WHAT if they're kidnapped / killed.

31. How embarassed?

"How embarassed should the media be over "pretty girl missing" coverage?"

Not nearly as embarrassed as they SHOULD be over their continuing coverage of the Bushelzebub and Dick Chafing show over the last 3 years.
