Surprise! President did fight for terror stopping measures BEFORE 9-11!
Whether you like the guy or not, the evidence is pretty clear in this article that the president did make stoping terror a top priority well before the horrific events of 9-11. Read it and weep, folks.

No one on this board is more anti-Bush than me - but if we DUers are to maintain any credibility here. Turns out the biggest obstacle wasn't the President - it was Congress.

2. Let's make sure that the public knows how "sorry" we are....
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, doubted that the Senate would rush to action before they recess this weekend. The Senate needs to study all the options, he said, and trying to get it done in the next three days would be tough.

One key GOP senator was more critical, calling a proposed study of chemical markers in explosives "a phony issue."

12. * stopped the congress in May 2001
from going forward with anti-terrorism legislation and/or homeland security legislation proposed by Lieberman. The Hart/Rudman committee of 7Repukes and 7Dems, 21/2 years and I don't know how many millions that expired on Feb 15 was extended so that they could testify and/or make suggesttions to the congress. Every member of congress recieved a copy of the report and it was shelved on May 1st by the asshole and Cheney was put in charge of the "anti-terrorism" force, this is when he was in the middle of negotiating with the Taliban. * asked the congress to refrain from acting until he had a report from Cheney, Cheney never had a meeting of his terrorist task force prior to 9-11.

There are several links that have been posted here that provided this information and I'm sure those who posted it will be able to provide a link. So * is still guilty.

16. Great point, A!
I rather doubt that the Nazi party at its peak of strength - practiced double standards much more than Tommy "the Exterminator Delay", Orrin Hatchit, Prick Cheney, Herr Scumsfeld, Wolfman, and the rest of the assorted ghouls of the dreadful Repuke party!!

9. The President who was fighting to stop terror was Clinton
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 04:17 PM by KamaAina
you remember him, our last elected President.

What could an article from 1996 possibly have to do with whether Bush* made fighting terror a priority in 2001? (unless maybe the article was by John Edward or Sylvia Browne :-) )

Edit: Spelling, plus a growing suspicion that I've been had by some subtle satire!

10. I may be misunderstanging you point
What does the linked article have to do with Bush*? To me it says that Clinton was very much in tune with the terrorism threat, that Congress (lead by Republicans) failed to act or have a reasonable response, and the next pResident largely ignored the issue before 9/11, focusing instead on bolstering the military-industrial complex.

Is that what you're saying too?

THe Hatch quotes are classic:
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, emerged from the meeting and said, "These are very controversial provisions that the White House wants. Some they're not going to get."

Hatch called Clinton's proposed study of taggants -- chemical markers in explosives that could help track terrorists -- "a phony issue."

"If they want to, they can study the thing" already, Hatch asserted. He also said he had some problems with the president's proposals to expand wiretapping.
