barbara bush dirt?
please help us. we are trying to find info that proves barbara bush isn't the sweet wife/mother that the media wants us to see her as.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

We have many family members who are devoted *ites who constantly go back to "we like barbara" - maybe if we can bring her down a few pegs, as she should be, we can also bring her son down a few pegs. He rides on the shoulders of so many. Maybe we need to bring down the shoulders of those he rides on.

2. I'd like to forget her - this is a personal family plea
we have older family members who think she can do no wrong we are asking for links to some of her "uglier" moments. I tried searching for stuff I know is there, but unfortunately her name is so ubiquitous the search was unfruitful. I am hoping that someone can point us in the right direction.

44. I don't know anybody else
who's three sons have been involved in so many questionable business deals.

They are all failures, except for having been bailed out by Daddy's friends.

Seems to be a huge amount of addictions in that family, too, so maybe she wasn't such a great Mommy?

I know this much, my grown kids have much better scholastic records, friends, reputations and jobs than these clowns ever had.

3. Paul O'neill's book.
“I just love the food here,” Bush said. “It’s real comfort food. A good thing to be eating right now.”
She asked what kind of comfort food he’d grown up on, what was the favorite thing he’d ask his mother to make on a special occasion.
Bush shook his head. “You got to be kiddin’. My mother never cooked. The woman had frostbite on her fingers. Everything right out of the freezer."

A good example of how imperious she can be. She told him something like, "I'm done with you (with a royal wave of the hand)!" after she found out who he was...when they were both on a plane.

24. Sorry for my bluntness
It just really boggles my mind that someone would actually vote for Bush because they like his Mom.

"people often excuse other people thinking if so and so likes them they must be ok." It's just difficult for me to grasp that kind of mindset.

That's encouraging about your Dad. I know several people who voted for Bush in 2000 and now know what a disaster he is. Keep planting little seeds with your Dad.

30. no need to apologize
I don't think I am quite saying that right. I think there are a lot of people we all know who are *supporters who maybe are having doubts, but there may be one thing they are hanging on to, like a lifeline, as an "excuse" to vote for him. I am simply trying to get rid of as many "excuses" as possible.

As for my Dad he and I had knock down drag out fights about politics when I was in high school/college. Dinner could be downright unpleasant, in fact, my mom put the stipulation on that we had to begin our conversations with "this is my opinion and you may not agree with me, but..." So having him even say the word "doubts" was unbelievable.

16. Excerpt from LK transcript,
Interview With Barbara Bush

Aired October 22, 2003 - 21:00 ET

<snip>
KING: You wouldn't be Barbara Bush without opinions, would you?

BUSH: No. You wouldn't be Larry without opinions, would you, Larry?

KING: You have to have them. How else do we exist?

BUSH: That's right.

KING: You have to have opinions. But you don't slander anybody.

BUSH: No, I don't think so.

KING: All right.

Your recent comments on the Democratic presidential...

BUSH: Isn't that funny? I knew that was going to come up.

KING: Oh, I want to discuss a lot of things. You said so far, they're a pretty sorry group.

BUSH: Well, you know, mothers are allowed to be proud of their sons. And it gets a little old when 10 grown men run around the country not talking about what they're going to do, but knocking my precious, courageous, brilliant son. That's a mother speaking.

KING: What's the biggest difference from being the husband -- being the wife of a president and the mother of a president?

BUSH: Well, first of all, you have to watch the father of the president suffer. And it hurts when your children are criticized. It hurts a lot.

KING: He takes it badly?

BUSH: He and I both do. He -- he curses, and I grit my teeth.

But, no, he really -- he knows that's the name of the game. But it gets pretty ugly.

KING: But was it harder for you...

BUSH: Much.

KING: ...when he -- when the current president is criticized than when the husband was criticized?

BUSH: Right.

KING: How do you explain it -- motherly?

BUSH: Motherly. And fatherly. I mean, that's just a normal reaction.

But the same would be true if something happened that was difficult for Jeb or for Doro or Neil or Marvin. And you can criticize me, but don't criticize my children and don't criticize my daughters-in-law and don't criticize my husband, or you're dead. (Emphases added)

Discussing her dismay over some of the drubbing that Dubya's taken, she said something like "criticize my family and you're dead." It won't really convince admirers that she's anything but a tough talking grandma, but for those who know her it's a piece of her ordinary mindset.

19. Barbara Bush is an old lady
She's not running for any office. I really don't think that anyone who supports Bush because they like his mother will turn against him if we "knock her down a few pegs."

I hate when they attack family members of politicians I support. It only makes my resolve firmer. We should stick to the issues and the people who are actually running, not their gray haired mothers. It just seems silly.

I would never try to convince someone to not vote for * based on his mother's quotes unless they thought there was some reason to support him because of her. He has done enough on his own to deserve his trip back to Texas.

32. Just suggest to them that ANY mother would support her son,
and leave it at that. BB may be the worst person in the world, but she's not an elected official and she's not running for office.

Your relatives will either take responsibility for finding out the truth about W's performance in office, or they won't. Either way, bashing W's mom will probably just make them mad.

I understand your frustration. I run into the same kind of thing from so-called "moderates" not to mention conservatives who won't think for themselves, won't read anything, and wave their hands or get angry when I try to bring up some facts about the chimp administration. They don't want to hear it.

29. If it was Laura we were talking about
you'd have a point. But Babs has long been part of Team Bush. She was a mighty boon to Poppy's candidacy, he used to jokingly lament that she was more popular than he was. She garnered a ton of goodwill for Bush, especially when contrasted with the shy, nervous, somewhat brittle Kitty Dukakis. During his term, she was regularly trotted out when he needed a PR boost. Americans loved her, many still do. There's nothing low about exposing her as the iron fist in the velvet glove. She's a player, not a bystander, and if more people are apprised of this, all the better.

20. Fortunate Son has a wonderful speech
Barbara Bush gave on what a bore childraising was. I don't have a copy here, but there were some great quotes there. She got no joy from raising her children.

Also, her eldest daughter Robin died of leukemia at the age of 3 or so and though little Junior knew she was sick, he was not told she was dying until after the fact. He was very angry at that.

When Neil told his wife Sharon he wanted a divorce, his distraught wife phoned her mother in law for support, but Bar only told her that "it's between you and Neilsie. You should talk to your own mother."

Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 12:53 AM by buycitgo
and I mean that in a NICE way.

more from that Larry King interview, for starters, via Voxfux:

Live on the Larry King show on CNN, Barbara Bush, the mother of the President threatened the Democratic candidates with death if they criticized the president or her husband or any of her children. The explosive remarks would have been front page news throughout the country had Hillary Clinton said them, but since it is from the Bush matriarch there is a deafening silence throughout the entire American press regarding this chilling comment. This is evidence of the massive fear and control mechanisms which have permeated into every facet of American establishment. There is no stopping the Bushes. Soon there will be blatant assassinations of political opponents in broad daylight and there will be no mention of them at all. This is America's darkest hour. There should be a chill down the spines of every thinking person in the world regarding this horrendous threat to all of humanity from the Bush family.

Here are the comments from the CNN transcript:

KING: You have to have opinions. But you don't slander anybody.

BUSH: No, I don't think so.

KING: All right. Your recent comments on the Democratic presidential...

BUSH: Isn't that funny? I knew that was going to come up.

KING: He takes it badly?

BUSH: He and I both do. He -- he curses, and I grit my teeth.
But, no, he really -- he knows that's the name of the game. But it gets pretty ugly.

KING: But was it harder for you...

And you can criticize me,but don't criticize my children and don't criticize my daughters-in-law and don't criticize my husband, or you're dead.

39. don't forget Ed Rollins' book......he's got plenty in there about
what a nasty, vindictive queenbee she is

good stuff on Arianna Huffington and Ross Perot, too. he managed Michael's senate campaign, and was Perot's first campaign manager, too.

he was ALSO Lee Atwater's mentor.....the details of Willie Horton are in there, along with Atwater's deathbed mea culpa.

excellent read, if you can find it...I bought it for a buck from a remainder bin, along with Senator For Sale, about the wildly undeservedly popular SCUMKING, Bob Dole.

from Amazon

Too bad this book's 96 release was too soon to receive much boost from the internet. Would have liked to read of author Rollin's take on the Monica/Clinton sex scandal. Rollins is observant enough to mention qualities of public figures that are seldom mentioned (such as Barbara Bush's mean-spiritedness).

36. mama bush
Barbara Bush is described by her closest intimates as prone to "withering stares" and "sharply crystalline" retorts. She is also extremely tough. When he was seven, Bush's younger sister, Robin, died of leukaemia and several independent witnesses say he was very upset by this loss. Barbara claims its effect was exaggerated but nobody could accuse her of overreacting: the day after the funeral, she and her husband were on the golf course.

She was the main authority-figure in the home. Jeb describes it as having been, "A kind of matriarchy... when we were growing up, dad wasn't at home. Mom was the one to hand out the goodies and the discipline." A childhood friend recalls that,"She was the one who instilled fear", while Bush put it like this: "Every mother has her own style. Mine was a little like an army drill sergeant's... my mother's always been a very outspoken person who vents very well - she'll just let rip if she's got something on her mind." According to his uncle, the "letting rip" often included slaps and hits. Countless studies show that boys with such mothers are at much higher risk of becoming wild, alcoholic or antisocial.

On top of that, Barbara added substantially to the pressure from his father to be a high achiever by creating a highly competitive family culture. All the children's games, be they tiddlywinks or baseball, were intensely competitive - an actual "family league table" was kept of performance in various pursuits. At least this prepared him for life at Andover, where emotional literacy was definitely not part of the curriculum. Soon after arriving, he was asked to write an essay on a soul-stirring experience in his life to date and he chose the death of his sister. His mother had drilled it into him that it was wrong when writing to repeat words already used. Having employed "tears" once in the essay, he sought a substitute from a thesaurus she had given him and wrote "the lacerates ran down my cheeks". The essay received a fail grade, accompanied by derogatory comments such as "disgraceful".

This incident may be an insight into Bush's strange tendency to find the wrong words in making public pronouncements. "Is our children learning?" he once famously asked. On responding to critics of his intellect he claimed that they had "misunderestimated" him. Perhaps these verbal faux-pas are a barely unconscious way of winding up his bullying mother and waving two fingers at his cultured father's sensibility.

The outcome of this childhood was what psychologists call an authoritarian personality. Authoritarianism was identified shortly after the second world war as part of research to discover the causes of fascism. As the name suggests, authoritarians impose the strictest possible discipline on themselves and others - the sort of regime found in today's White House, where prayers precede daily business, appointments are scheduled in five-minute blocks, women's skirts must be below the knee and Bush rises at 5.45am, invariably fitting in a 21-minute, three-mile jog before lunch.

38. The most telling thing about her
I think is that she says no one can take credit or blame for how her kids turn out. But she's wrong. And Jackie Kennedy Onassis had it right when she said that if you bungle the raising of your kids, then nothing else you do really matters.

That, in a nutshell is what makes Barbara Bush so terrible and so pathetic. But I guess if every single one of your kids has been in trouble with the law during their lives, your only self-protection is to think you had nothing to do with how they turned out.

45. Kerry's mother?
has anyone even heard a word about her? I haven't. Just asking before we go down this road.

No one, even Bush, should be held in the least bit responsible for the behavior of their family members. If stupid people want to vote for Bush because they like Babs they are beyond our reach. But attacking her is just as low as the cheap shots aimed at Roger Clinton, Billy Carter, etc. Who the heck with common sense cares about family members? I sure as hell don't want to be judged by mine since I certainly didn't pick them.

What if we find out later that John Kerry's mother has an unsavory past, is a right winger, or has said stupid things? Let's not go there.

46. and for all of those who decry the nasty tone toward this lovely woman:
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 01:24 AM by buycitgo
just remember what the fascists did to the first lady who preceded that thing in the offal office.

this site is some sort of a poll dealing with why Hilary was so derided.....

the first answer typifies the delusionally hate-filled, apocryphal stories spread about them:

Other: Because she's a fucking bitch?

One of the new civilians in my shop is a retired Lt Colonel and he used to work in the White House when Bill was in office. The simple fact is that Hilary is an unstable bitch and shouldn't be given anything, much less a position of power. She apparently had this rule in the White House that if she was in the hallway everyone else was to run, not walk to the nearest doorway and get out of the hallway. One of the days this guy was working he heard a crash followed by a terrified looking man diving into the room he was in.

The guy was apparently new and nobody had clued him in. The crash was a $70,000 antique Indian vase that she had thrown at the guy. Another thing he told me was about the White House china set. The White House had the same china set for decades before Barbara Bush noticed that they needed an upgrade. There were chips in the paint and so on so Barbara held a meeting to pick out a new set that would be suitable for the White House. These sets run hundreds of thousands of dollers which sounds pricy but it is the White House we're talking about here.

That was a warranted purchase. Well about a month into Bill's first term Hilary goes & buys a whole new set because she didn't like the color. Yeah, fuck the tax payers. She is worthless and you should see this Colonel's face when someone mentions her name. It's like he's having war flashbacks or something. You don't have to believe me but this guy seems to be telling the truth.

yeah...sure.....what about the rubbers on the Christmas tree, Gary?

then there's this, from an obvious escapee from a mental ward....a snip from a long, demented rant that even better typifies the mindset of so many of the seriously ill wingnuts:

I hate that they totally trashed the White House when they left and stole countless items. All of this isn't a conspiracy and is well documented. well documented, by whom? Tony Snow?

oh....ha....it's from a PS2 chat site.....no wonder; when you don't read, this is the level of enlightenment achieved

48. Try to get out-takes from her memoirs! Wouldn't that be great.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 03:32 AM by Hekate
Despite what Amazon.com says (below) I remember the Time magazine review last year that said her editors had to excise an awful lot of material because Babs just couldn't seem to restrain her desire to lash out. It sort of gave credence to advice she is supposed to have given to her young sons about "getting even" with people who crossed them. Anyhow, I remain sorry that her publisher didn't just let her say whatever the hell she wanted to and let the readers make their own judgments. I'm sure it would have been most enlightening.

Amazon.com: "Republicans and Democrats alike appreciate her wit, her compassion, and her devotion to her family. Dignified, loyal, and unpretentious, Barbara Bush defied skeptics to become one of the most admired first ladies in history; she remains a beloved public figure today." :puke:

56. I HAVE A REAL LIFE TRUE STORY ABOUT BABS
I'll post it here, if you think it appropriate.

It concerns a friend of mine, a popular TV actress and stage entertainer, who had been "hosted" by Babs in Houston many year ago.

She related a NASTY comment Babs made to her.

Since this is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyy down the bottom of this thread, I'll check back in later, to see if people wanna "hear" this actual story.

I don't have the exact reference but..

Just before the "selection" in '00, there was a bit of talk about GW's drinking and DUI. She came out blasting in support of him. As I recall, after she said something like "oh that is not important at all" the media didn't keep on it.

I think it was a shame because she lied to protect her sorry son and the World is paying the price.

91. The "frozen fingers" shrub comment about her
In Suskind's book about Paul O'Neill, O'Neill relates a story his own wife told him. It was right after 9/11 and the inner circles convened at Camp David. O'Neill's wife sat beside Bush* at lunch. He'd asked her to sit next to him. They were having homemade chicken soup and sandwiches.

Bush* commented how much he liked the lunch, saying that it was comfort food. So, O'Neill's wife asked him what sort of comfort foods his mom made that were his favorites. Bush* laughed and said that his mother had perpetually frozen fingers because all she ever did was make meals that came out of the freezer. And then he announced that they would have comfort food again for supper, there at Camp David.

Maybe if that old bitch got up off her "beautiful mind" and was a real mother - well, who knows how * would have turned out.

99. OKAY HERE'S MY BABS BUSH STORY
Rather,

It's the story of a friend of mine and Babs. Granted, this falls under hearsay, but I believe my source.

I'm an actor, and for 3 years in the early 90's I was a main character on a CBS soap opera that was based in New York. One of the longest running, most popular characters was played by an older actress who also had a touring cabaret act. In the 70's her character was something of a phenom, cuz in the earlier days of soaps, things were much tamer; she was the FIRST real nasty female daytime villain. For a while there, this actress's character was the focus of a lot hype and popularity, ala Susan Lucci later was for a number of years.

This actress told me about touring the country with her show, and when she was in Texas, Babs invited her to come over (I think she watched our show), and gave her a tour around the city. My friend marvelled at the lovely, private, exclusive gated community that the Bush's lived in. To that, Babs remarked.

"Oh, we love it here. Keeps all the niggers and the Jews out."

So. Maybe in this day and age, that remark doesn't seem so shocking. And all we've learned about the Bushies, this is just another brick in the wall. But my actress friend remarked at how CASUALLY Babs just tossed this comment out. So casual. Such a given. It was so, well....mundane, her attitude about "the niggers and the Jews."

And my friend wasn't a fellow Texan, "one of them," and Babs just made such a casual throwaway remark to her like that. Plus, it's BABS. Supposedly the kindly, grandmotherly type.

Well, this kindly white-haired old lady raised a nest of vipers sucking at her breast!

So, that's my Babs story!

Captain Mike
