Daily U.S. Casualties 4/5/2004

The American military death toll in Iraq rose to at least 610 Sunday, following the announcement of several deaths over the weekend.

As of Friday morning, the Department of Defense said 596 U.S. service members had died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year. Of those, 406 died as a result of hostile action and 190 died of nonhostile causes. The department did not provide an update over the weekend.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 458 U.S. soldiers have died -- 297 as a result of hostile action and 161 of nonhostile causes, according to the Department of Defense as of Friday.

Since the start of military operations, 2,988 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department's figures as of Friday.

The latest deaths reported by the military:


One U.S. soldier was killed Sunday in a battle at the Spanish garrison in Najaf.


Seven U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday while fighting Shiite militiamen in the Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City.


Two Marines assigned to the 1st Marine Division were killed after attacks in Anbar province Saturday.

No new identifications were reported.
