Condi Will Testify Because of a Photograph

HELP GET THIS STORY OUT -- See bottom of post.

Press Release Source: Newsweek

NEWSWEEK EXCLUSIVE: Before Rice Agreed to Testify in Public, 9/11 Commission Executive Director Faxed White House 1945 Photo Showing Presidential Chief of Staff Appearing Before Pearl Harbor Congressional Pane

"The photo, from a Nov. 22, 1945, New York Times story, showed presidential chief of staff Adm. William D. Leahy, appearing before a special congressional panel investigating the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
The point was clear: The White House could no longer get away with the claim that Rice's appearance would be a profound breach of precedent."

"Last Monday morning 9/11 commission executive director Philip Zelikow faxed a photograph to the White House counsel's office with a note saying that if the White House didn't allow national-security adviser Condoleezza Rice to testify in public before the commission, the photograph would '..be all over Washington in 24 hours,' "

CNN has a story suggesting the photo "nudged" the WHite House. :eyes:

Yahoo has the story buried in Finance. :eyes: But the Yahoo story is more specific, so check it out:

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040404/nysu007a_1.html?

Thanks to being listed at Josh Marshall's TPM, it is #25 in number of viewings among finance stories but doesn't even appear on the most e-mailed list. I e-mailed it to a bunch of people. If everyone who wants to see this story get out will also E-MAIL IT TO A BUNCH OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW, it will help. Even clicking the link will give it a higher rating in 'most viewed. '

It would be good to E-MAIL IT TO JOURNALISTS (ESPECIALLY LOCAL ONES), CONGRESS-PEEPS, ETC.

Way to go, Philip Zeilikow!!!

1. You thought Chimp could read?
Maybe we should send illustrations of everything he has done to make future points.

2. why warn them that the photo would "...be all over Washington in 24 hrs"?
Why not just put it all over Washington anyway? I'll never understand why the kid gloves go on when handling bushco, but come off for everybody else.

6. This is total BS. For the picture to work as advertised, one would
have to understand the context. The majority of people who saw the picture would have NO IDEA who the people were and what it meant. Why are they publishing a 60 year old picture? I saw the picture as posted here in several threads and I have no idea who these guys were. I understand the photo is presented with the backstory and why the comparison would be embarassing, but absent that, the photo itself is meaningless.

3. And a whole lotta people posted all over the web that other NSAs
had given testimony in the past. Many also pointed that the Constitution never mentions anything about a National Security Adviser, let alone anything prohibiting that office from testifying. Then when the WH house changed story from 'the Constitution prevents' to "separation of powers prevents..." some bright folks pointed out that the commission is a creature of the Executive branch and not Congress so that dog didn't hunt either.

Shoot down enough excuses and the excuse giver starts looking a bit silly.

4. Separation of Powers
Funny how the WH ignored the Separation of Power that stipulates the president needs a formal declaration of war from Congress. He's no different than any president since Roosevelt in this respect, though.

8. Not sure what half the responses here mean, but they

seem annoyed about something other than Bush*. Focus, guys.

Kicking this up for those who might find it interesting (or annoying, what the hell.)
